Comma Rule #2

Compound Sentences-- Use commas with conjunctions (FANBOYS) to join two simple sentences.

• Things to remember: You put the comma

before the FANBOY! • You MUST have a simple sentence on one side

of the ,conjunction and another simple sentence on the other!

Example: Mrs. Scott likes to shop, but Mrs. Romine likes to save money.

Comma Rule 2 rewind...Do this on a sheet of notebook paper. Rewrite the sentences correctly. If the sentence is correct as it is, write C. Name on your paper. Turn it in to

me.

1. The band played at the pep rally and the cheerleaders performed their routine.

2. I sat next to my best friend, but she didn’t talk to me.

3. We cheered for the 6th graders, and clapped our hands.

4. The boys basketball team gathered at center court, and jumped up and down.

5. The 8th graders stood up and then they cheered.

Comma Rule #3: use commas with standard conventions.

Comma Rule #6

When you use a series of adjectives, you often separate the adjectives with commas.

• You only use a comma between adjectives when the word and can be inserted between them.

• Examples:

--He is a strong, healthy man.

-- We stayed at an expensive summer resort. You would not say expensive and summer resort, so no comma.

The guy is a tall, football player. Yes or No

• Follow the directions.

Comma Rule #4:To set off extra information(clauses, phrases, words)

• These are generally the appositives.

Example of Appositives:

• 1. Mrs. Whitlock, the teacher next door, is the an animal lover. –Phrase

• 2. The dentist, who practiced his trade often, was a little nervous about his new patient.—Clause

• 3. The new student, Mark, participated in class the first day.—Word

Let’s Practice- remember commas are indicators that we need to PAUSE!

• The apartment cleaned and repaired is now ready to be rented.

• Sasha our new neighbor used to work as a waitress at Chevy's.

• Writing in my journal especially late at night helps me develop ideas for short stories.

• Seth who used to be Gerald's roommate left town with three months of unpaid rent.
