Comiso (Sicilian: Còmmisu) is a municipality in the Ragusa Province, it has existed since before Byzantine times. Comiso was devastated by the 1693 earthquake and rebuilt on the same spot as the old ruins in the Sicilian Baroque style.Under Byzanthine rule the town was called Comicium, then it was conquered by the Saracens. From 1453 to 1812 it was a fiefdom of the Naselli family, who restored the old Byzantine castle, adding a wing and a chapel, and made it their residence. In 1693 the ominous earthquake destroyed almost all the houses, and left only the churches of SS. Annunziata and San Biagio.Richest in water reserves, Comiso is among the most fertile and top agricultural producers of Sicily.There are many interesting and important churches in Comiso among which the Mother Church of Santa Maria delle Stelle (15th century, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake), features a dome, a tower and a wooden ceiling painted with 17th century frescoes.

The road leading up to Ragusa, notably the final stretch, provides impressing views of the Ippari Valley and the coast. The country-side is densely populated, most due to presence of factories and hothouse plantations. Richest in water reserves, Comiso is among the most fertile and top agricultural producers of Sicily.

The Pagoda della Pace: for over a decade now Japanese monk Gyosho Morishita of the Nipponzan Myohoji order worked on a peace project near the NATO base of Comiso, once full of nuclear missiles. This is the first on the Mediterranean, the 80th built by the Nippozan Myohji in the world, in places that are symbolically important for peace. The Pagoda is 16 m tall, 15 wide, with a dome surmounted by a pinnacle. Inside 70,000 small stones each with a painting of the lotus Sutra.

Pagoda Păcii a fost construită lângă baza militară NATO de către călugărul japonez Gyosho Morishita din ordinul Nipponzan Myohoji, prima din zona mediteraneană dintre cele 80 construite în locuri importante din punct de vedere simbolic pentru menţinere păcii. Pagoda are 16 metri înălţime şi un diametru de 15 metri. Înăuntru există 70000 de pietricele având fiecare pictată Sutra Lotusului.

The Church of the Annunciation has a monumental stairway and was built on the remains of the earlier Byzantine church of St. Nicholas (XVI century).

Worthy of note in Comiso is the civic museum, located at the Old Fish Market in the “Piazza delle Erbe”.
