The Habitat crew would like towelcome a new staff member,Rick Felty of Doylestown, who brings experience in afford-able housing issues and feelsright at home on the constructionsite. Rick is working alongsideConstruction Supervisor, RayLuszczak, and AmeriCorpsmembers Robin Fraser andMolly Mattecheck.

“Without officially working here,I was very familiar with workinghere,” Rick says. He spent twoyears serving on our buildingcommittee when Habitatwas working in Bristol, and his work atCommunity CommitmentInc. brought him to sitesupervising young peopleinvolved with the juvenilecourt system.

His commitment to youthwas a determining factorfor Rick in accepting thisnew position with Habitat. “I likethat we’re connected with

AmeriCorps; I enjoy passing onwhatever I’m able to pass along, making it easier for younger people.I owned my own constructionbusiness for 12 years.”

Rick says he appreciates being awayfrom a climb-the-ladder environ-ment. “I believe in Habitat’s missionand making Bucks County a betterplace to live. I’m impressed by theconstant reinforcement that this is ateam effort. You just don’t find thatpositive attitude on the outside. That’s the first thing I noticed aboutHabitat.”

The first annual Hike for Habitat onSaturday, October 26, made a differencein Bucks County. Observing national Make aDifference Day, the 5K hike through PeaceValley Park in New Britain was designed as ayouth fundraiser to support Habitat’s EmeraldHollow community of 37 townhouses inTrumbauersville.

The hike was established in response to thegrowing number of young people who wantto participate in a service project withHabitat; but many are younger than 15 yearsold, which is the minimum age requirementto work at the construction site. “The hikewas a meaningful way for young people toget involved,” said Nancy Lewandoski, youthcoordinator. “It helped raise awareness of thelocal need for simple, decent, affordablehomes and generated support for the projectthrough individual sponsorship.”

All ages were represented within the groupof 58 walkers and 10 volunteers. Youthparticipants and their adult leaders raisedapproximately $1,000 in sponsorship pledgesin preparation for the hike. Make ADifference Day, an annual celebration ofneighbors helping neighbors, was created byUSA WEEKEND Magazine.

Strengthening LeadershipRoles with Habitat Bucks

✍director’s corner

I hope all of you, our Habitat Bucks family, had a great holiday season. We at HabitatBucks took a little time to relax, catch ourbreath and prepare for the next round ofbuilding! We are making great progress, withthe help and support of an ever-increasingnumber of people accepting leadership roles.

You will read about NARI in this issue (pg.1), and the incredible service they areproviding the Habitat Bucks families. Twovolunteers who have taken an amazing leader-ship role in the NARI Blitz Build are PhilBlosser and Mike Fallon. I wish you all couldmeet them; they are special people. Phil is thepresident of the Bucks-Mont NARI chapterwho began our partnership by pulling togethera committee of NARI folks. But planning wasjust the start of Phil’s contribution. He wasout at Emerald Hollow swinging hammerswith the rest of the group. And he persuadedsome of the crew in his company to comealong. Anytime we’ve called for help, Phil hascome through with suggestions and actions. We are grateful for the privilege of workingwith Phil, a truly soft-spoken, yet powerfulleader.

Then there is Mike Fallon. Mike took on the

task of over-seeing the entire blitz buildproject. Mike also operates his own company,so this was no small commitment. Mike is abig man; he looks like he could lift a wall onhis own. And he needed to shoulder the load ofplanning and implementing a blitz build ofthis nature. We consider ourselves very fortu-nate to meet and work with someone ascommitted, caring, strong and resourceful asMike, who is willing to accept nothing but thebest efforts from himself and others. Everyoneat Habitat Bucks feels enriched to have workedwith him on this project. Mike leads with alaugh, a smile or a squinted eye, whatever isneeded to ensure success. NARI recentlypresented the President’s Award to Mike forhis volunteer work in the community, including his Habitat contributions. It waswonderful to be at the gathering to applaud hishonor, especially because we who know himare certain that although he appreciates therecognition, it’s not about the award for Mike.

A final leadership spotlight for this editionbeams on a staff member—another personcritical to the success of the NARI Blitz Build, and to Habitat Bucks as we move forward intothe future—our Director, Trish Kriger. Trish

has been with us since July, and in this shorttime, she has made an amazing difference inour organization. As our lead contact withNARI, Trish exchanged enough emails andcalls with Mike and Phil to clog a computerand a phone line. She always made sure thatwhatever had to happen with NARI happened. And that was just one Habitat Bucks projecton her plate. Trish creates ideas, develops thenecessary plans and schedules, and leads theeffort with skill, humor and passion for thetask. Whether it’s a blitz build, a business planor a new partnership endeavor, her recentaward, NARI’s Friend of the Year, tells youhow our partners see her.

Without special people such as thosehighlighted here, other special contributionsyou have heard about or still others laboringquietly behind the scenes, Habitat Buckscould not continue to grow and serve theBucks County community. On behalf of ourstaff and board members, our thanks go out toeach and every Habitat Bucks supporterworking with us.

BILLTUSZYNSKI

Bill Tuszynski wasin the neighborhood. He wasn’t passingthrough; Bill is aresident ofQuakertown whowas pleased for the volunteer outlet Habitatwould provide. Bill began working atEmerald Hollow in December 2001, whenconstruction began.

“The local Habitat was doing something inour area, and it was an opportunity to getinvolved myself and through the Rotary,”Bill says. He is Program Chair for theQuakertown Rotary, which has volunteeredat Emerald Hollow throughout the past year. The rotary has donated hours to the Bessefamily and recently gave $1000 to HabitatBucks.

Bill holds a special place in our hearts withhis upbeat personality and positive attitude. He also lends Habitat his talents to fill manyroles, as the chair of the Family SelectionCommittee, a member of the Hike for Habitatcommittee, organizer of the inauguralHabitat 5K and a committed volunteer onsite.

Giving back to the community in which helives renews Bill’s purpose in offering somuch of his time to Habitat. He is motivatedby “the satisfaction of seeing people gettinginto better situations and helping themalong.” He adds, “I’m always amazed thatpeople are willing to live in houses that Ihelped build.”

Although Bill poses as a construction workerregularly, his true pastimes are running,“reading everything” and traveling.

Thank you, Bill, for everything you do!

As with all Americorps*VISTA volunteers, another one-year term has come to an end.For NANCY LEWANDOSKI, youthcoordinator, that means passing the torchto a new volunteer and saying goodbye toa rewarding and challenging experience ina position that was held first by her.

The youth coordinator position wascreated out of a desire to increase theyouth activities and education that hadpreviously been enveloped by the volun-teer coordinator’s responsibilities.

“We needed someone to take the youthprogram to the next level and evolve it, tobe articulate and make the connections weneeded to make the youth program asuccess,” says Jim Petruzzi, executivedirector. “Nancy has farsurpassed my expecta-tions.”

Trish Kriger, director, agrees. “Nancy hasbuilt an incredibly solidfoundation for [HabitatBucks’] youthprogram,” she says.“She has a very natural, motivating qualityabout her that hasresulted in her makingso many connectionsfor us in the schoolsand in the community.”

Nancy came to Habitat Bucks afterworking several years in electronic andprint media. She graduated fromCreighton University in 1999 with ajournalism degree and skills she has usedto produce this newsletter.

“I wanted to feel like I was making adifference in my work,” Nancy says. “Thisposition has been life-changing. It hashelped me open myself to things outsideof my experiences. This is the type of jobthat makes you think more of others thanyour own financial success.”

Nancy says that her work with Habitat hasopened her eyes in many ways. “It’s givenme an in-depth perspective on economicstruggles. The faces, the hearts, the faith offamilies who own a home through Habitat

have shown me that I take a lot forgranted.”

Since taking on the inaugural position,Nancy has been involved with youth fromelementary schools to high schools tovocational-technical schools and colleges.Bucks County Community Collegestudents have been regular volunteers onsite; Barclay Elementary School’s sixthgrade class creates thank you notes;carpentry students at Upper Bucks Vo-Tech School are working on framing for anEmerald Hollow cluster. The biggestundertaking was Nancy’s creation of“Hike for Habitat,” which resulted in 58participants and 10 volunteers from areaschools hiking around Peace Valley Park to

raise money and awarenessfor Habitat Bucks.

“It was a challenge to facemy fears of not being ableto contribute something, toplan youth events. Lettingmyself get really involvedemotionally and physicallywith my work—that wasreally hard for me to do,”Nancy says. “It’s a differenttype of work that requires adifferent kind of energy—more hands-on, moreemotional.”

Although her full-timecommitment to Habitat Bucks is ending,Nancy will be staying involved by contin-uing her work on the newsletter. “I have adream of making a life out of freelanceprojects with writing and editing, and Ihope to continue working with non-profits.”

The Habitat staff couldn’t be happier thatshe’ll still be a presence in the office andon site. Mikaela Martin, director of opera-tions, has worked with Nancy since lastFebruary. “Nancy’s made an invaluablecontribution to Habitat that will lastforever. I am thrilled that she will continueto share her creativity, her energy and herlaughter with us.”
