CAP SCIENCE DAY

Last Friday our school held a CAP Science Day where students were rotated around different science themed lessons and experiments from investigations with static electricity, plummeting eggs in insulation casings, to exploding messes and colour changing cabbage water, students were encouraged to have hands-on experiences with everyday scientific phenomena around us. We also had visitors sharing their expertise with some groups. Miss Donna Burton came to share with. Stage 2 about the exciting happenings in our solar system and Mr Barrington shared his expertise in planes and flight. Paired with a ‘Mad Scientist’ themed dress up day, there were lucid moments in the midst of madness.

Willoughby’s Weekly Words

Towards the end of this term the school will be holding its annual student led conferences. These are a great opportunity for children to sit down with their parents or carers and teacher and discuss their progress so far this year at school.

One of the key factors in a child experiencing success at school is a good home/school relationship. Attendance at student led conferences is a great way to build that relationship.

During the last few years there has been a decline in the number of parents and carers who’ve accepted the invitation to come and discuss their child’s progress. If you haven’t availed yourself of the opportunity to attend in the recent years please do so this year.

Information on student led conferences should come home in the next week. Please ensure you complete the relevant section on the note and return it to your child’s class teacher as soon as possible after you receive it. Your child’s teacher will then contact you about a suitable time to meet.

P & C NEWS

Next meeting Monday 25th June 7 pm—in the Staff Room. Glenn King, a Teacher Feder-ation Delegate, will be in attendance to advise on proposed changes to the Department of Education and Communities procedures. All parents are welcome to attend.

ATTENDENCE—EXEMPTIONS

There are times during the school year that children cannot attend school. Most absences, whilst are best avoided, are necessary for the family. We are endeavouring to initiate a roll monitoring program here, these absences do not count on your child’s record. Absences for reasons such as: medical (Whooping cough, measles, family visits to the doctor, dentist, paediatrician etc), exceptional circumstances (floods, funerals, family holiday etc) apply here.

These absences can be granted as exemption from attendance from the time the school is notified.

To increase the likelihood of an exemption being granted please ensure that the school (Principal, classroom teacher or office staff) is informed of your child’s inability to attend as soon as you know.

The school will then ensure that the necessary paper work is completed.

Have a new kid by Friday (wisdom from the Proverbs)

There’s a Bible Proverb that says “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” 22:6 #1 Even the first word, “train” is loaded with meaning; here’s a few thoughts: * The younger you start the better (a bit like training a puppy really). * Establish a healthy authority early (children obey parents, not the other way round) * More action, less words (say it once, turn your back, walk away) * Then be consistent (don’t threaten and not follow through) * Respond, rather than react (most of our reacting is negative and angry) * Praise and reward good behaviour. (Train the heart) ……Its worth the effort. A thought from your School Chaplain Dale Martin

P &C Spellathon

Spellathon has been running in our school for over 20 years and many thousands of dollars raised. Coonabarabran Public School will be involved again this year.

There will be a maximum of 50 words to learn and students will be given time to learn these words before being tested on Thursday 14 June 2012. Each student will be given a sponsor sheet to seek sponsorship. Sponsorship is on the basis of a donation or so much per word spelt correctly. The sponsor sheet needs to be returned to their class teacher on Thursday 14th June 2012. They will then be tested o their words and the results will be recorded for each student and marked on their sponsor sheet. Students are asked NOT to approach Infants students to sponsor them or anyone that would not comprehend what is being asked of them.

The winning class will win $100 to be spent as they like. The two students who raise the most money will receive a $40 open order each, donated by the Acacia Motel. Students who bring in over $50 will be entered into a grade draw to win a $10 canteen voucher. There will also be grade draws for students who bring in more than $20 and have not won a prize. Their prize will be a $2 canteen voucher. Teachers may reward students with school merit awards for their efforts.

nate for.

Personal Best

Bonnie England Bonnie is a delightful student who has fantastic ideas that she articulates very well. She loves coming to school every day and has beautiful handwriting. Bonnie creates incredible artworks with lots of thought going into them. She gets along with everyone and is starting to show some leadership with her organisational skills. Well done Bonnie!

Personal Best

Toby Mills Toby is always polite and considerate, he gets along with all his peers and is willing to help them in class. Toby is a good sport and listens well to instructions. He is very organised and is an asset to have in KH.

Name: Mrs Hain Years teaching: Since having children… too long! Years at CPS: 3 Blackboard or Smartboard? Smartboard although am partial to chalk

FAVOURITES Grade to teach: 3 Excursion: Dubbo Zoo Subject: Science (LOVE IT!) School Event: Lunch time…Seriously, Athletics Carnival Book: Harry Potter series

TEACHING MEMORIES First day: Kindergarten… very scary! Most embarrassing: Mixing up students’ names… Sorry Darcy and Oliver Most enjoyable: When students say thank you for a great day. Biggest change: The amount of paper work teachers have to do. Definitely not a 9-3pm job.

The Three Lizards

One sunny day there were three lizards who lived with their uncle and aunty. One day their aunty said “you must go and find your own houses”.

Tom, the little lizard wanted to live near his aunty and uncle. So…he found a vinegar bottle and water proofed it and made furniture.

Mea the middle size sister also wanted to live close. So she found a small can to live in. But…they didn’t know that they were being watched by the big bad goanna.

Only Tombo the biggest lizard knew about the big bad goanna. So he went far away, far enough to fool the big bad goanna and going far is good because Tombo is faster than the big bad goanna. Tombo knew how to keep his brother and sister safe. The big bad goanna went back to eat Mea and Tom. First he went to eat Tom and said ‘’let me in little lizard or I will break your house down’’.

‘’No , no’’ said Tom. So the big bad goanna broke the vinegar bottle. But he got some glass in his foot and screamed ‘’ouch ouch’’. While that happened Tombo was building a camaflague house. The next day the big bad goanna went to Mea’s house but… this time Mea wasn’t home because she had to take Tom to Tombo’s house because Tom was sick. As well Mea and Tom wanted to live with their big brother.

The big bad goanna left for good because he knew the lizards would trick him again.

This term saw the final touches being made to the sandpits in the infants playground. They have been very well received by the students, there was standing room only on the first day and they loved helping Mr Keeler with the paving. A big thank you to Mr Newton and Mr Hadfield who came up in the holidays and used their trucks and bobcat to make the new sandpits. The P and C contributed the money to make these changes and we appreciate the hard work it takes to raise that money. It has been a term of fun fun fun!!!!!

This term has been a very busy term for 3-6W. They have been busy completing whole school testing and NAPLAN at the same time as getting to know me, their new teacher, and my expectations of them in the classroom. Students have been busy learning how to write descriptions and information reports as we read through Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl during our modelled reading lessons. They have written some great descriptions of the farmers as well as Fantastic Mr Fox himself. 3-6W have been producing some fantastic artworks. There are several talented students in the class who have amazed me with their artistic skills as they have been busy drawing, painting and even making collages to do with our HSIE unit, National and Local Parks. They make it very difficult to select one artist of the week!

I have been enjoying the many different personalities and creativity of the class and am looking forward to continuing on with this class for the rest of the year.

Are you interested in seeing a F-111 fighter plane?

There will be one in town on Tuesday near the tourist information centre at 3.30. If you would like to see one.
