Could I please ask all children and parents to be considerate of our neighboursproperty. I recently had a call from a neighbor who had children running through his garden. Over a period he has had a number of plants broken. At Pleasant Heights we have 4 values Responsible, Respectful, Safety and Fun. We need our children to exhibit these values out of school as well as in school. Please be respectful and responsible towards our neighbours by staying out of peoples gardens and private property and by crossing driveways carefully and by using the footpath or nature strip.

P&C DONATION TO THE SCHOOL

We are very fortunate at Pleasant Heights to have a hard working P&C who volunteer their time to organise many worthwhile events at the school and raise a considerable amount of money. Funds raised by the P&C have contributed towards the purchase of significant resources such as interactive whiteboards, the covered outdoor learning area (COLA), library resources and many more. This term the school P&C accepted our request to fund the purchase of Microsoft Surface RT tablets for use in the primary school. Microsoft Surface RT is a great choice for powerful, affordable, touch-enabled tablets for students and teachers. Surface RT allows multiple students to share the device by creating their own unique Microsoft account, with settings adjusting to the students when they log in using that account. A great benefit is the ability to extend the classroom into the cloud for students and teachers to collaborate in real time, as well as store and share documents. Educational apps in all subjects are also available. In 2014 Curriculum change will impact schools with the implementation of the new NSW Syllabuses incorporating the Australian Curriculum. This will commence next year with English K-10.

Teachers will be required to provide greater opportunities for students to develop Information and Communication Technology (ICT) competence. Students will need to develop competence and creativity as well as increased skills and processes in working technologically. The teaching/learning outcomes in the new syllabuses will support students understanding and use of technology now and into the future. Stage 3 students in particular, will be required to integrate the use of technology as they prepare for High School. Thanks to the generosity of our parent community and the P&C, who have donated $8479.00 to purchase these new devices, we are in a position to provide the support to ensure that our students are confident in all aspects of technology as they begin their senior years of study. We were able to purchase these Microsoft Surface devices at a very special price for a limited time only, and for this reason the school has purchased a total of 60 devices, for which the P&C have paid half the cost. Next year we will trial the use of the Microsoft Surface RT in all primary classes and the current school iPads will be utilised in the infants classrooms. Both of these devices are terrific tools for teaching and learning and will greatly help our students realise their full potential.

NSW Rural Fire Service

Following the recent NSW bush fires 3/4S decided to send letters, poems and pictures to the NSW Rural Fire Service. Last week, Mrs Venables received this letter from the Commissioner. I was touched to read the comments and poems written by the students in Class 3/4S and would appreciate it if you could pass on to them my thanks and best wishes.

I would also like to commend the school on raising and discussing the issues of bush fires and their impacts with your students. It is never too early to learn.

I would be grateful if you could let the students know that I have arranged for their drawings to be placed on display in RFS Headquarters during the current bush fire season.

I sincerely appreciate you and the students taking the time to write to me.

Yours sincerely Shane Fitzsimmons ADSM Commisioner

PBS Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

Week 5 saw another PBS Mad Hatter’s Tea Party being hosted by the Queen of Hearts aka Mrs Venables. Invited guests, students who have achieved PBS Tracking Tree 4, were treated to a fun afternoon of yummy treats, ‘juice’ tea and laughter! The ‘mad’ hats that students wore to the tea party were very creative and really added a special touch to this anticipated event. It’s wonderful to see the smiles and feel the excitement of students who are attending this fun reward afternoon.
