Coming Events

Messages from the Acting Principal

Dear Parents & Carers,

MEET AND GREET ON WEDNESDAY

14 OCTOBER Kinder 2016 will meet with the Year

5 students in the Hall from 9am till

11.30am tomorrow. Year 5 students have

participated in a number of training ses-

sions with Mrs Seymour to learn how to be

“Better Buddies” and are eager to put their

skills to work with next year‟s Kindergar-

ten group. The parents are invited to the

staffroom to also meet and greet. They will

learn more about the open classroom setup

at St Joseph‟s as well as navigating the

school‟s website. We will also give parents

tips for how to help with home reading

tasks to make it an enjoyable and success-

ful experience.

After meeting Zachary Binder and

Lucy Pereira (our newest St Joey‟s village

members) last week and with a new Kin-

dergarten starting soon the poem below

reminds us of how quickly our children

grow up. My „baby‟ turned 21 last week!

The Last Time Don't forget...

There is a last time for everything.

There will come a time when you will feed

your baby for the very last time.

They will fall asleep on you after a long day

and it will be the last time you ever hold

your sleeping child.

One day you will carry them on your hip,

then set them down,

And never pick them up that way again.

You will scrub their hair in the bath one

night and from that day on they will want to

bathe alone.

They will hold your hand to cross the road,

They never reach for it again.

They will creep into your room at midnight for

cuddles, and it will be the last night you ever

wake for this.

One afternoon you will sing 'the wheels on the

bus' and do all the actions, then you'll never

sing that song again.

They will kiss you goodbye at the school gate,

the next day they will ask to walk to the gate

alone.

You will read a final bedtime story and wipe

your last dirty face.

They will one day run to you with arms raised,

for the very last time.

The thing is, you won't even know it's the last

time until there are no more times, and even

then, it will take you a while to realise.

So while you are living in these times,

remember there are only so many of them and

when they are gone, you will yearn for just

one more day of them

For one last time.

HSIE FOCUS TERM 4 Last term in HSIE we focused on In-

donesian culture and finished the term with

cooking and Batik fabric painting. It was a

fabulous way to end the term and we had lots

of mums and grandmas come in to help out.

The HSIE focus for term 4 throughout

the school will be on a „Let‟s Celebrate‟

theme. Students will be setting goals, explor-

ing ways that people celebrate events and

achievements, the reasons behind specific

celebrations and comparing celebrations

from different cultures. The students will

revise their own goals throughout the term

and we plan to acknowledge their successes

at the end of the term through our end of

year events.

ACTS OF KINDNESS Congratulations to Anna Prodger and Matilda Howe

who received the Acts of Kindness Awards at assembly last

Friday for consistent kindness and generosity towards others.

WHEELCHAIR SPORTS We are lucky to have Rick Engles visit the school on

Thursday from the Wheelchair Sports Roadshow. Each stage

will view a presentation on Road Safety and participate in a

game of wheelchair basketball to give them a taste of the

sport and to experience what it is like to be in a wheelchair.

PRAC STUDENTS We are fortunate to have with us Ellen Henry in Stage 3 and

Patricia Jones in Kinder from Southern Cross University with

us for their Practicum experience (for the next few weeks).

We welcome them to our village and hope their time with us

will prove to be valuable on their journey to the teaching pro-

fession.

And suddenly it‟s Term 4 – hard to be-

lieve! Our LAP students and tutors have

been very busy with many different activi-

ties over the past terms. This year we wel-

comed on board Michael, Carmel McK,

Donna, Veronica & Julie; all keen to give

some time to help out with our LAP programme. Unfortu-

nately, Veronica and Donna have since had to leave the

programme due to work and study commitments, but we

sincerely thank them for the time they were able to give.

We feel very lucky to have had our other new tutors join

the programme and hope that they are enjoying their time

with us. Also, we look forward to welcoming Danielle to

our team this term. Thanks for offering your help Danielle!

Our thanks, as always, to our seasoned tutors, Carmel K,

Gabbie, Louise, and Glen. We also send our thanks to

Sarah McG and Vaughan S who helped out with the pro-

gramme earlier in the year in Term 2.

We are always ready to welcome more tutors on board, as

we have a number of students waiting to join the pro-

gramme. So if you, or someone you know, have an hour to

spare each week and would enjoy working with our won-

derful students, please contact the school and we will be

happy to provide more information about this great pro-

gramme.

Finally I would like to share some of our LAP Snaps from

previous weeks to showcase the different activities our

young LAP-ers are enjoying. Our students gain so much

from the programme and keenly look forward to their LAP

sessions each week.

Looking forward to bringing you more LAP news

MATHS CHALLENGE Sport News

Using each of 1, 2, 3,4, 5, and 6

once and only once, fill in the

circles so that the sums of the

numbers on each side of the three

sides of the triangle are equal.

Ten white and ten red discs are

lined up as shown.

Switching just two adjacent discs at a time, what is the least

number of moves you can make to achieve the white, red,

white red, …. arrangement shown here? Explain the strate-

gy you used to solve the problem.

Richmond Zone Summer Sports Trials A number of students from St Joseph‟s Alstonville will be

participating in the Richmond Zone Summer Trials in Touch

Football, Softball, Basketball, Cricket and Tennis at various

venues around Lismore on Thursday 29 October 2015

(Term 4 , Week 4) commencing at 4.00pm. (Back Up Date

Thursday 5 November 2015).

Parents will need to organise their child‟s transport to and

from the venue. Children participating at this level will need

to wear appropriate clothing for their sport (cricketers are to

bring their own ball and all necessary protective gear – hel-

met ,protector etc ) and have appropriate sun protection. It is

also advisable that they bring their own drink bottle.

Wheelchair Sports NSW Roadshow This coming Thursday 15 October the Wheelchair Sports

Roadshow will be visiting St Joseph‟s Alstonville. The

Roadshow is an exciting, informative and interactive display

of wheelchair sports. Costing for this presentation is $1.80

per student.

The program consists of a 20 minute presentation on Road

Safety and the consequences of taking risks, disability sport

and living with a disability. The talk will be made more

powerful by the fact that the presenters can explain first hand

what life is like living in a wheelchair.

A 40 minute game of wheelchair basketball with the students

will give them a taste of wheelchair sport plus an idea of

what it is like to be in a wheelchair, if only for a short time!

The program is innovative, thought provoking and interac-

tive. It will give the students a powerful talk on the conse-

quences of taking risks by using personal stories. It will also

give the students an understanding of disability sport and the

“abilities” of people with a disability.

Infants Swimming Program Students in Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two will all

be involved in a 5-day Swim & Survive Programme at the

Summit Sports Centre Goonellabah. This program will com-

mence on Monday 26 October (Week 4). A letter regarding

this was sent home today. Please ensure payment for this

compulsory activity has been made before Wednesday 21

October.

School Banking at St Joseph’s Primary School!

St Joseph‟s Primary School participates in the Com-

monwealth Bank School Banking program. The

program provides children with an opportunity to

make deposits into their personal Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver

account at school each week. The program is about how often your

child makes deposits, not how much they deposit.

To encourage regular savings behaviour the program offers an excit-

ing Rewards Program. Every deposit of any amount earns your child

a Dollarmites token. Once they‟ve collected 10 tokens they can re-

deem them for a reward. The Outer Space Savers rewards for 2015

include a handball, ET on DVD, Intergalactic Rocket, Glow-in-the

Dark Solar System, Invisible Ink Martian Pen, Money Box and Gal-

axy Glider!

When your child makes their first deposit at school they will earn

their first Dollarmites token and our school will also receive $5 com-

mission, as well as 5% commission for every deposit made at school.

The Commonwealth Bank will be holding an account opening ses-

sion at our school on Wednesday, 28 October at 8.30am.

If you are interested in opening a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver

account for your child please come along to this session and bring

along your driver‟s licence or another form of photographic identifi-

cation. Alternatively, you can open an account at any branch; by

calling 13 22 21 or online if you are an existing Commonwealth

Bank customer.

School Banking Day at St Joseph‟s Primary School is on Wednes-

day. Thank you for supporting our school and helping teach your

child the benefits of saving regularly.

RA MATERNITY HOSPITAL, FIJI A huge thank you to our wonderful school com-

munity for your generous donations to the hospi-

tal in Fiji. At the end of last term the goods were

boxed up ready to go to Gymea in Sydney ready to be

shipped.

This could not have happened without the generosity of Mr

Kerry Howe (Matilda, S2) who arranged for Flynn's

Transport to truck the boxes to Sydney. The challenge

arose when the boxes had to then travel almost another 60

kms from the depot in Wetherill Park to Gymea. This in-

curred a fee. Through the magic of Kerry the goods ar-

rived in Gymea safe and sound ready for the container

bound for Fiji. Several phone calls between Kerry, Fr Bri-

an in Gymea, and myself made this happen and I cannot

thank Kerry enough for his time and expertise otherwise

this social justice activity would not have hap-

pened. Thank you for your contribution to our village Ker-

ry and to someone else's village in Fiji.

SOCKTOBER Many parents should have had the strange request

from their child over the weekend that went some-

thing like this: “Mrs Rowling said we have to bring in

a sock and a peg to raise money for kids in Madagas-

car to have clean water”.

Yes, here we are at Socktober, a Catholic Missions initiative which

focuses on raising awareness in children of the plight of others who

are less fortunate than ourselves in other nations.

At assembly last Friday the students viewed a short DVD presenta-

tion about the lack of sanitation in a school in Madagascar and how

our donations can assist the children who are dying from preventa-

ble diseases due to contaminated water and lack of education

around personal hygiene etc.

Our school community is going to be doing the following:

Forming a sock “clothesline” in our classrooms so children can

place their coins and donations in. These sock lines will form

part of our liturgy in Week 4 and symbolise us working together

to Sock Out Poverty.

On Friday 23 October we will be having a Crazy Sock Day

where the students may wear socks of various kinds in various

ways with their uniform for a gold coin donation.

On the same day we will be holding a “Rock Your Socks Off”

lunchtime dance party in the hall for anyone who is interested.

The Social Justice team will be assisting with a Crazy Sock Col-

ouring Design Competition . The goal for our school is $500. This is only $2.50 per child. Do

you think we can reach that or surpass it? A Socktober liturgy will be held on Friday, 30 October in the hall

at 11.15am. Please join us on this day.

More Sock News next newsletter.
