    McDonald revealed post-race that

Waller and his team had to manage the temperamental filly so far this

campaign. She showed ability at her first start when finishing third in the

Victory Vein (1000m) on October 17, a race won by Captivant (Capitalist),

before the stable switched its attention to qualifying for the Gold Coast

    race on January 16.

“She’s a hypo little filly, so Chris and his team have done a great job

with her,” McDonald told Sky Racing.

“We always knew she had ability, but she needed to come here today

    and do it.

“She wasn’t that comfortable on this track around the turns, but she

was still too good. She has a really good turn of foot and the six furlongs

will be right up her alley.”

She’s All Class was a $200,000 purchase from the draft of Yarraman

Park at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by Brae

Sokolski, who races the filly under his Yes Bloodstock banner along

with a string of partners including Ozzie Kheir. The pair also race

multiple Group 1-winning stablemate Verry Elleegant (Zed) and enjoyed

Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) success with Sir Dragonet (Camelot) this year.

She’s All Class is the sixth individual winner for Shirra Nui (Viscount),

an unraced half-sister to New Zealand Listed winner Khemosabi

(Commands) and the Melbourne stakes-placed Zyzxx (Danehill),

and again demonstrates her sire I Am Invincible’s (Invincible Spirit)

remarkable ability to upgrade his mares. The filly is the Yarraman Park

Stud flag bearer’s 60th individual stakes winner.

Shirra Nui, who is owned by Gall Bloodstock, has not had a live foal

since producing She’s All Class but was covered by Super One (I Am

Invincible) on September 11 this year.

Eleven Eleven lining up for 2021 Magic Millions day

Earlier, this year’s eventual Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m)

winner after the disqualification of Alligator Blood (All Too Hard), the

Greg Hickman-trained Eleven Eleven (Fastnet Rock), shored up another

trip to the Gold Coast with a comfortable victory at Wyong yesterday.

The four-year-old took out yesterday’s $100,000 Magic Millions Wyong

3YO & 4YO Stakes (1200m) en route north, defeating Yao Dash (Smart

Missile) by three quarters of a length. Spaceboy (Deep Field) was another

one and a half lengths away in third.

Eleven Eleven ran sixth first-up at Rosehill on December 5 over 1100

metres under Keagan Latham and the South African jockey was again on

    board yesterday.

Hickman, who also won the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas with

    Pierata (Pierro) in

    2018, cannot wait to

    return to Queensland

    with Eleven Eleven.

    “It’s working out

    OK. It’s been a little

    bit up and down with

    his preparation but he

    won really well today,”

    Hickman told Sky

    Racing.

    “Keagan gets on

    really well with this horse

    and he knows what he

can do on him. He might

have been a bit wide, but

he gave him plenty of space to hit the line.

“He’s the type of horse who wants to have an uninterrupted run. He’s

not a stop-start horse and Keagan knows all that.”

Latham rode a patient race on Eleven Eleven despite being caught

wide from barrier six in the eight-horse field, but the talented gelding

picked up strongly around the home turn to ensure he had the major prize

    in his keeping.

“It was a much better performance (than first-up). He got really, really

tired last time and I didn’t have a lot of options from a bad draw, so I

opted to go forward and it was the slightest of gut-busters but he’s a tough

    animal,” Latham said.

“He’s obviously come through that and today he quickened up really

well and put them away pretty easily but in the last 100 metres he was

emptying out a little bit (fitness-wise), so we are on the right course to go

back up to the Gold Coast.”

Hickman, who is likely to give Eleven Eleven another lead-up run

before the Magic Millions raceday on January 16, paid $230,000 for the

horse from the Magic Millions sale from the draft of Edinburgh Park.

He is the second foal out of Ian Smith’s US-bred mare Smokin’ Alice

(Smoke Glacken) whose two-year-old colt Ovoid (Exceed And Excel) sold

for $1 million to trainer Gerald Ryan at the 2020 Gold Coast sale. This year,

Smokin’ Alice had a colt by Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) born on October 29.

60 for I Am InvincibleI Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) brought up

his 60th individual stakes winner yesterday

when She’s All Class (2 f ex Shirra Nui by

Viscount) took out the Magic Millions Wyong

2YO Classic (RL, 1100m) yesterday. Yarraman

Park’s I Am Invincible stood for $209,000 (inc

    GST) in 2020.

Conquering to Toorak AffairThis year’s Hobart Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) winner

Toorak Affair (7 m Toorak Toff - Smooth Return

by Redoute’s Choice) returned to form second-

up by taking out the Conquering Stakes (Listed,

1400m) at Launceston last night. Given a

ground-saving ride by Anthony Darmanin, the

Michael Trinder-trained Toorak Affair - who

settled well back in the field off a solid tempo

set by Ruettiger (Duporth) - snuck through to

score by a head from Mystical Pursuit (Needs

Further), trained by Trinder’s son Adam,

with long odds-on favourite Mandela Effect

(Turffontein) a length and a half away in

third. The Conquering Stakes is named for the

    Tasmanian warhorse Conquering (Dangerous),

trained by Charlie Goggin, who won 23 of his 80

    starts including seven stakes races.

Inglis Digital tops $50 million as Belieber starsThe final Inglis Digital online sale of 2020 saw

last year’s Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) fourth

Belieber (Zoustar) purchased for $300,000 by

Tory Lavalle of ML Stables. Lavalle is seeking to

honour his brother, Mick’s, legacy by building

up ML Stables at Kembla Grange with trainer

Anthony Mountney and Belieber, who was

formerly with Gai Waterhouse and Adrian

Bott for the Tait family, will spearhead the

operation. “My brother raced horses for more

than 30 years, many with Kembla Grange

trainers, and the family want to continue his

legacy,” Lavalle said of Mick, who died in 2014

aged 50. “Our aim is to win a Group 1 in his

honour. We’d like to have 16 in work at all times

but with a few babies still to come through, it’s

exciting to be starting the new year with a horse

like Belieber who is already racing and looks

very progressive.” The final sale for the year

took 2020 turnover on Inglis Digital through

the $50 million mark and brought the curtain

down on what has been a breakthrough year

for the platform, with its first Group 1 graduate

in Bella Vella (Commands), a new record top

lot in Small Minds (Canny Lad) at $410,000

and the utilisation of its features to host the

Great Southern Sale and the Melbourne Gold

Sale due to Covid-19. “It’s been immensely

satisfying to see the growth of Inglis Digital

from a fledgling monthly online sale, to

become a trusted and popular avenue for

people to trade stock – and the quality of

horses continues to raise the bar,” Inglis

Digital business manager Nick Melmeth said.

“We’re excited by the prospect of the platform

improving even further in 2021 and look

forward to working with buyers and sellers to

    achieve further outstanding results.”

Gold Edition for Fleet DoveKelly Schweida will take his chances in the

Golden Edition Plate (Listed, 1200m) with

Fleet Dove (Not A Single Doubt) at Doomben

on Saturday, with the Brisbane trainer

    already scratching the three-year-old from

a benchmark race at the same meeting. The

Basil Nolan-bred and owned Fleet Dove, who

has won three of her six starts, ran sixth in the

Mode Plate (Listed, 1200m) behind Isotope

(Deep Field) and Gotta Kiss (Not A Single

    Doubt) on December 5. "Unfortunately,

she's not a Magic Millions filly so she'll chase

black type wherever we can find a suitable

race as her owners are breeders," Schweida

said. "She jarred up a bit last run, but it was a

good effort. She had to go back after she drew

bad and I'll be praying the track stays heavy.

I think she's quite versatile as she ran a fast

time when she clocked just over 56 seconds

when she won first-up on a Good track at the

    Sunshine Coast."

Two-state raid a first for rookie Jennings Fledgling trainer Caroline Jennings will

experience a day of firsts, even before two

of her most talented horses attempt to

continue their winning runs on Saturday.

The Pakenham trainer will have her last-

start winners Arabian Hussey (Al Maher) and

Written Miss (Written Tycoon) in action at

Randwick and Flemington. "I've never had

a runner at Flemington or at Randwick and

I've never had two runners in two states on

the one day," Jennings said. In total, Jennings

has had 17 starters for five winners. Written

Miss has had two outings for two easy all-

the-way wins at Ballarat and Pakenham

while Arabian Hussey has won two of her

four starts, including her most recent at

Sandown Hillside on December 2. Jennings

said she would stay in Melbourne to watch

Written Miss contest the Lexus Holiday Plate

(1200m). "I'd like to be in the two places but

my assistant Roger Elliot will take Arabian

Hussey to Sydney," Jennings said. "Everything

about (Written Miss), her demeanour, her

attitude said she will run 1200 metres."

Dunn targets Badoosh at Magic MillionsMatt Dunn will be represented by Badoosh

(Sebring) in the Bisley Workwear Handicap

(1400m) at Randwick on Saturday when the

    four-year-old resumes after a career-best

    campaign. Badoosh posted back-to-back wins

at Rosehill and Kensington during the early

spring, before finishing unplaced behind She's

Ideel (Dundeel) at Randwick in October. Dunn

is keen to get the gelding to the Gold Coast for

the $250,000 Magic Millions Open Handicap

(1800m) on January 16 and will give him two

lead up runs in Sydney. "He has always been

a horse that has shown he's got above-average

ability," Dunn said. "Getting his head around

the whole thing has been the biggest issue but

he's got there now and his last prep was really

strong. He's in a race (on Saturday) that's a bit

higher grade than what he is eligible for but he

trialled well the other day down at Kembla. He's

being set for the Magic Millions, probably the

1800-metre race, so he will need two runs going

    into that."

RV backs away from whip-free racesRacing Victoria has backed away from plans

to hold a trial of “whip-free” racing in the New

Year, with the state governing body yesterday

confirming it would not hold the “whip for

safety only” races during the Festival of Racing

in 2021. Earlier this week, it was revealed that

RV was planning on running a series of races

where whips were to only be carried by jockeys

for safety purposes but it led to a backlash from

a significant number of industry participants

and stakeholders. “RV outlined publicly in

September 2020 its belief that the current

national whip rules are no longer appropriate.

RV believes that whip reform is essential if

racing is to retain its existing audiences and,

importantly, ensure that it is attractive for the

fans and employees of tomorrow,” RV said in

a statement yesterday. “RV stated that it will

always support the carrying of a whip by jockeys

on safety grounds and that the industry’s

immediate priority should be reducing its

maximum permitted usage to between five and

eight times per race in line with many other

    leading international jurisdictions.”

5,000 allowed at FlemingtonThe Victoria Racing Club (VRC) has received state

government approval to have as many as 5,000

people on course at Flemington on Saturday

and, as a result, the general public will be allowed

to attend the meeting. Owners have previously

had permission to attend Victorian meetings

in recent months as Covid-19 restrictions have

eased, but now the general public will be allowed

on the Flemington lawn areas. “We can’t wait to

see thousands of people through the gates on

Saturday to enjoy Flemington’s famous hospitality

and quality summer racing,” VRC chief executive

Steve Rosich said. “The VRC has put a lot of time

and effort into preparing for increased capacity

and ensuring we could host up to 5,000 guests in

a Covid-safe environment, while still maintaining

the fantastic raceday experience we are renowned

for. We like to think this is an early Christmas

present for many, and we hope our members and

guests relish the opportunity to celebrate a return

    to some normalcy at Headquarters.’’

Payne splits with First Light Racing Michelle Payne has indicated her intention

to be active at the upcoming Magic Millions

and Inglis sales after she split with leading

syndicator First Light Racing, resulting in her

losing a “fair whack” of her stable. Melbourne

Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)-winning jockey Payne

will lose around 15 horses in her name and

will be looking to rebuild her stable. “It was a

hard decision to come to,” Payne told Racing.

com. “It’s extremely disappointing for me

and my team. We had a few disagreements. It

wasn’t easy (to make the decision), I love the

horses, we have some really nice ones and

great owners, which made the decision very

hard. But you have to stick strong to what you

believe. I’ll be up there (at the sales) and taking

part, put out some feelers for some expressions

of interest going forward and look to rebuild.”

First Light Racing’s director Tim Wilson was full

of praise for Payne. “Michelle has decided to go

in a different direction. We’ve had a great three

years together, we wish her well,” Wilson said.

“She’s a good young horsewoman and we wish

her and her team the best. She’s been terrific in

helping us with the handover of these horses as

    they go to new stables.”

Lismore meeting rescheduledThe deluge of rain in south east Queensland

and northern NSW has prompted Racing

NSW stewards to reschedule tomorrow’s race

meeting at Lismore. It has been transferred

until Tuesday, with officials hoping a break

in the weather will allow the track to dry out

enough to be safe for racing. Nominations for

the meeting have been reopened, closing at

11am today, and acceptances will be taken

    tomorrow.

    NEW ZEALAND

Tarzino Trophy winner Mav to returnJohn Bary believes Saturday’s Manawatu

Challenge Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Awapuni

is the ideal race for resuming Group 1

winner Callsign Mav (Atlante). The four-

    year-old stunned punters when winning

the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) in the

spring at odds of 80-1 and backed up

that performance with a third placing to

Melody Belle (Commands) in the Windsor

Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m). Bary is confident

his charge is well prepared for the fresh-

up assignment after a trial at Taupo last

month where he finished a close second

over 1050 metres. “He is about forward

as he was before the first Group 1 of the

season,” Bary said. “We were thrilled

with his trial at Taupo. He wasn’t going

to trial there, but we snuck that one in

which was good. We were going to trial at

Foxton the other day but it was a Heavy10

so he did an exhibition gallop at Hastings

which was pleasing. He had been down

to Waipukurau and galloped in company

with Miss Labasa so we have kept it up to

him. Once he was in the paddock after the

second day at Hastings we just thought,

‘Where’s next?’ and once they slaughter

you with those points, going from 80 to

103, then you are weight-for-age pretty

much. His main aim is this race and then

we are looking at Te Rapa in February and

then the Haunui Farm two weeks later. We

will decide after Saturday if we need a run

    in January.”

Kiwi Ida ready for the ChallengeJohn and Karen Parsons will turn their

focus to Awapuni on Saturday, with Kiwi

Ida (Squamosa) defending her crown in the

    Manawatu Challenge Stakes and last-start

Cromwell Cup (2030m) winner Camino Rocoso

(Shocking) tackling the Manawatu Cup (Gr 3,

2300m), both with Chris Johnson up. "We hope

Kiwi Ida is pretty much on the button," Karen

Parsons said. "We get a lot of pollen-related

viruses through the spring and we blood tested

her before the Pegasus when she ran third and

she was all clear but then after she ran so far

below her best on the middle day, we blood

tested her again and it wasn't quite right. She's

been tested again and she's right now. Camino

Rocoso is going well too and when he strikes

    form, he usually holds it.”

Parsons’ proud of Johnson’s achievementsThere are not many prouder of Chris Johnson

then North Canterbury trainers John and Karen

Parsons. As Johnson guided the Ellis Winsloe-

trained Point Score (Ekraar) to success in

Invercargill last Saturday to level up to David

Walsh's record of 2,451 New Zealand wins,

the Parsons were overcome with emotion.

"It was incredible," Karen Parsons said. "We

didn't have any runners down there but we

were glued to the TV for every race. We're

very close with Chris. He's like our son. He's

a superstar jockey and we're very proud of

him." Johnson will aim to make the record

his own at Ashburton today, with seven

rides, including the trio of Baby Menaka

    (Zed), Letsbringiton (Sebring) and Quintuple

Twins (Sebring) for the Parsons. "I’d love it

to be one of ours," Parsons said. "But it's not

important. The most important thing is Chris

Dry tracks key to Platinum InvadorLeading owner Neville McAlister is hoping

a return to the dry tracks of home will let

    punters see Platinum Invador (Redwood)

back to his best in New Zealand this summer.

The multiple Group 1 placegetter resumes

his New Zealand career in the Manawatu

Cup (2300m) at Awapuni on Saturday

after a Melbourne spring preparation that

McAlister can only describe as “a bit of a

disaster”. Platinum Invador was sent to the

Peter Moody stable to have a crack at the

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m), but he did

not make the field after striking unsuitable

surfaces. “The first Good 3 track that he went

on was enormous, when he just got beaten

into third in the Herbert Power at Caulfield,

and then after that, he just won’t stride out

on tracks that are heavily watered, so that

was a bit of a learning curve,” said McAlister,

who owns Platinum Invador along with John

    Street of Lincoln Thoroughbreds. “Probably

if we’d started every race at Caulfield we’d

have had a lot more luck than what he did.”

Platinum Invador is trained by Lisa Latta.

Guineas for Tony BeThe Auckland Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) at

Ellerslie on New Year’s Day is on the agenda

for impressive last-start winner Tony Be

(More Than Ready). The Steven Cole-trained

three-year-old broke maiden ranks at the

Ellerslie twilight meeting over 1600 metres,

coming from beyond midfield in a steadily-

run affair. “It was a good effort the other day

because they went very slow early,” Cole said.

“His sectional times were very good. I think

he ran the second fastest last 600 metres on

the day. It was a pretty impressive effort, and

he is a nice colt going forward.”

More in story for LelawalaPromising three-year-old filly Lelawala

yesterday, dashing away in the concluding

stages under apprentice Darren Danis to

take out the NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race

(1200m) at just her second start. Prepared by

trainer Chris Wood, Lelawala had finished a

good second on debut at Rotorua yet still paid

    a tidy dividend of $15 when saluting. “She’s a

nice progressive filly. I won’t throw her in the

deep end just yet. She’s got plenty of ability and

I have always liked her,” Wood said. “She went

a very good race first-up at Rotorua and today

she just showed what she has got. She is a filly

with plenty of upside and plenty to look forward

to.” Sharing in the ownership in the daughter

of Niagara (Encosta de Lago) are Wood’s sons

Jonty and Tom, the latter well-known race

caller is currently plying his trade in Hong

Kong. “It’s nice to have them in it,” Wood said.

“Phil Proverbs and I bred the filly and when it

came time to racing her, I put a couple of good

friends Ken Green and Keith Smith into her. My

two boys and Phil are in the horse and it’s nice

    to have good people involved.”

UK: Ascot does not expect attendances to return to pre-Covid levels until 2022Ascot racecourse has said it does not

expect attendances to return to pre-

Covid levels until 2022 and that it

faces a "significant" pre-tax loss next

    year without government support. Guy

    Henderson, Ascot chief executive, says

the course's trading loss would have been

more than £20 million this year without

the safety net of insurance, the furlough

scheme and business rates relief. "In 2020,

the impact of the pandemic has been

    significant but mitigated by cushions

such as the government furlough scheme,

    business rates relief and pandemic

    insurance for racing without crowds,”

said Henderson, as the course released its

2019 financial results which recorded a

rise in turnover and pre-tax profits. “That

picture adversely changes in 2021 and the

business has had to take the appropriate

steps to reduce its fixed and variable

costs. Our modelling projects a significant

pre-tax loss in 2021. While the business

is robust and remains in sound financial

health, the journey back to normality will

be gradual and determined by the phasing

of public allowed to the races. We do not

expect to see a full return of the public to

2019 levels until 2022. Overall, in terms

of our long-term financial flight path, we

forecast that the Covid-19 pandemic will

have set the business plan back at least

    three years."

    BY LEO SCHLINK | HKJC_RACING

A Zac Purton quartet at Happy

    Valley yesterday has breathed

fresh life into the Hong Kong

    jockeys’ championship after the

Australian made significant inroads into his

    championship rival Joao Moreira’s lead.

    Chasing a fifth championship, Purton

trailed Moreira by 21 wins on December 9, but

has now reduced the deficit to 14.

    Fuelling hopes of another gripping

    late-season title shoot-out with Moreira,

Purton’s rich vein of form has seen the New

South Welshman post a treble during the

    International Jockeys’ Championship meeting

at Happy Valley followed by a double at Sha Tin

at the Hong Kong International Races fixture.

He was typically phlegmatic about an

    understated opening to the season.

“I just had so many wide barriers,” Purton

said of a frustrating start to the 2020-21 term.

“You can’t believe you just go months and

months and months just being on the outside

    all the time.

“Every time I came to the races, I was on the

outside. It was making it really hard.

“You ask your horses to take a position, it

takes an effort and they’re empty in the end or

you go back and give them too much of a start.

“It was the same script over and over.”

Purton attributed his searing form streak

    – nine winners in three meetings – to recovery

    from a torn hamstring.

“It’s taken a long time to come good,” he

    said. “It was frustrating.”

When asked about his bid to add another

championship to his successes in 2013-14,

    2017-18, 2018-19 and 2019-20, Purton said:

“That’s a long way off, I need some luck.”

    Moreira endured an exasperating night

with four minor placings from eight rides.

Making his intent plain from the outset,

Purton made immediate inroads into Moreira’s

buffer by riding three of the first four winners

aboard Bundle Of Delight (Tavistock), Smart

Cousin (Highly Recommended) and Noble Birth

    (Per Incanto).

Bundle Of Delight’s triumph in the Class 4

    Shelley Handicap (1800m) reignited Purton’s

momentum as the 2019-20 champion jockey

continued his pursuit of Moreira on a chilly

Wednesday night at the city circuit.

“Give me some good barriers and it makes

all the difference. They’ve put me on the outside

all season, it’s hard out there,” Purton said.

“He won well. It was a good effort. He was

building towards a performance like that. Got

to a suitable distance, good gate, good run.”

    Bundle Of Delight delivered Melbourne

    Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)-winning trainer David Hall’s

    13th winner of the season.

Purton logged a double with a supremely

patient ride – ironically from the widest gate

    (12) – aboard Smart Cousin in the Class 5

    Staunton Handicap (1800m).

The former New Zealander, prepared by

Dennis Yip, secured his first win in Hong Kong

at his 12th attempt after unleashing a sweeping

    late sprint.

“We had a bad gate so we needed some

luck,” Purton said. “Couldn’t get in early, a few

horses were pressing forward, so I had cover.

“There was enough pressure in the race for

me to be able to track up and he did the rest.”

Purton’s hot streak continued as the Jimmy

Ting-trained Noble Birth prevailed in the Class

4 Graham Handicap (1200m), drawing praise

    from the jockey.

“It was a good effort,” Purton said. “He’s a

progressive horse. He showed at his last start

there was something there. He drew the right

gate, had the right run, he did a good job.”

Purton took over on Noble Birth following the

suspension of Neil Callan, who suggested to Ting

that a hood should be applied to the son of Per

    Incanto.

“He (Purton) wanted to ride the horse,

(but) unlucky for Neil,” Ting said.

    Purton punctuated his dominance with

victory on Flying Genius (All Too Hard) in the

Class 3 Cochrane Handicap (1000m) for Tony

Cruz, who had earlier successfully combined

with Jerry Chau and Delightful Laos to land the

    Class 3 Gage Handicap (1650m).

Ting took training honours with a treble

with Baby claiming the Class 3 Elgin Handicap

(1200m) for Vagner Borges, condemning Moreira

to the runners-up stall for the third time.

Hong Kong racing continues this Sunday,

    December 20 at Sha Tin.

  • IT'S IN THE BLOOD

    | 12 |

    TREVOR MARSHALLSEA | @ANZ_NEWS

It’s called line-breeding when it works,

and in-breeding when it doesn't,” is the

old line, the sardonic joke that salves

some of the wounds from the capricious

    lottery of making horses.

    Fine lines indeed.

They’re being put under the microscope

again, and in this instance starting to bear

results, with a horse named Significance - who’s

showing he needs to be as carefully prepared as

    he was bred.

He’s onto his second trainer in Clare

Cunningham, after his bullish ways apparently

earned him a ticket out of John O’Shea’s stable,

following one Wyong win and two placings

from nine starts. Under Cunningham, he’s

been on the upswing, with three wins and two

placings in eight runs - the wins coming in

his three of his past four starts including the

completion of an eight-day double through

    Saturday’s Christmas Cup (Listed, 2400m).

There was also a great amount of care and

precision involved in the creation of the four-

year-old, bred by Bruce Wilson, of Victoria’s

Glentree Pastoral. Wilson has worked amid

close advice with Arrowfield’s expert pedigree

analyst Peter Jenkins for years now. Breeding

icon Nick Columb, a close associate of

Arrowfield, was also a key factor in their annual

planning get-togethers until his passing two

    years ago.

A half-dozen years ago, one such meeting

concluded Glentree should strike out to Europe

to achieve a substantial boost to its dam band.

At the Arqana broodmare sale in Deauville,

in December 2014, a price of €230,000 secured

the foundation mare for this endeavour, Aqua

Bella. She was unraced but of refined heritage,

the eighth of an eventual 13 named foals from

    the outstanding Danehill mare Aquarelliste.

The ninth became the stakes-winning Dubawi

    filly, Ame Bleue.

Aquarelliste won three Group 1s in her

home country France, and ran second in two

prestigious others – the 2001 Prix de l’Arc de

Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) and the 2002 Hong

    Kong Vase (Gr 1, 2400m).

“What I liked about Aqua Bella,” Jenkins

tells ANZ Bloodstock News, “was she had that

female line to Danehill, in that she was out

of arguably Danehill’s best daughter in the

    northern hemisphere.”

Jenkins was at the tasting stage of a theory

about the monolithic Danehill. Duplicating him

in a pedigree could be dangerous or delicious,

depending on how it was done.

“Quite early on I noticed that duplicating

Danehill in pedigrees didn’t have a great

outcome,” Jenkins says. “But if you dig down, you

find it’s actually that a double-male of Danehill

(having two of his sons in the first four or five

generations) is a relatively poor cross. If you can

sex balance the lines of Danehill, or even get a

double female cross – of Danehill through two of

his daughters – you’re far better off.”

Jenkins was inspired in part by a recent

    gilded template that suggested in-breeding

to Danehill could be successful, when not

all male. In 2013 - a year before Aqua Bella’s

purchase – four Group 1s had been claimed

by Godolphin filly Guelph, whose pedigree

    featured a 2x3 sex-balanced cross of Danehill

offspring, through sire Exceed and Excel and

    second dam Camarena.

And so, on buying Aqua Bella in France,

there was an extremely tantalising potential

mate for the rising four-year-old across the

English Channel, a certain son of Galileo who’d

    been unbeaten in 14 starts.

Frankel would complete that double cross

of Danehill daughters, since his dam Kind was

    by the great sire.

He had only retired two years earlier, so was

unproven at stud, but the portents added up

for securing one of only a handful of Southern

Hemisphere-timed matings with him in 2015.

Aqua Bella then made the long trip to Glentree,

where right on time on August 10, 2016,

    Significance was born.

A handsome, big type bearing several of his

famous sire’s markings, it was not surprising

the colt (one of only two Frankels at the Inglis

Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 2018) fetched

$1.1 million amidst the Arrowfield draft, sold

to Domeland. It was a strong result even

considering the price of the mare, and Frankel’s

then £125,000 service fee (plus air fares)

made the cost of creating the yearling around

    $650,000.

“We wouldn’t have done it if it was a double

male cross,” Jenkins says. “But being a double

female we thought it wasn’t going to be a

    negative.”

Other factors added allure to the Frankel-

Aqua Bella mating. Jenkins had detected

Galileo matched well with Danzig-line mares,

not just through Danzig’s most famous

offspring Danehill but another son in Green

Desert. He’s the sire of Aqua Bella’s sire Oasis

Dream, and thus Danzig fills three of the 16

    slots in Significance’s fourth generation.

“This is the curious thing,” says Jenkins.

“You seem to be able to duplicate Danzig as

much as you want and it doesn’t do a lot of

    harm.”

Far more care has to be taken with Danehill,

within the first four or so generations. That’s

because while Danzig has no duplications

in the first five generations of his pedigree,

Danehill is the product of some successful

inbreeding himself (though we’d better call

it line-breeding). He had the great Blue Hen

Natalma as a dual great-grandparent, as the

dam of Danzig’s sire Northern Dancer, and of

    maternal granddam Spring Adieu.

“In effect, Danehill’s an inbred horse,”

Jenkins says. “And if you get an inbred

individual you tend to want to outcross with

it. Inbreeding back to an inbred individual is a

    negative in most animal husbandry.”

Far more success generally comes with

inbreeding with an outcrossed horse, such as

Danzig, or Sadler’s Wells, who’s fairly distant

4x5 to Hyperion is his only five-generation

    duplication. For example, there’s a tight 3x2

cross to Sadler’s Wells in the bloodline of no

    less a star than Enable.

“So inbreeding to inbreeding is probably

not good, across the board, but there are

    exceptions,” Jenkins says.

Apropos Danehill, one is the double-

    daughter cross, evidenced in Significance

via Kind and Aquarelliste. Or there’s the sex-

balanced mix of a son and daughter, although

this demands some precision, and a bit more

    dilution of the Danehill blood.

Jenkins points to Arrowfield’s sires Snitzel

and Not A Single Doubt, both by a Danehill son

    in Redoute’s Choice.

“You can get Danehill duplications to

work, but mostly through the Danehill strain in

the mare being a female one, or a male strain

that occurs through the mare’s own dam,” he

says. “It is a negative with Danehill being in

the sireline of an individual’s dam; it’s more

effective with Danehill being in the pedigree of

the dam’s mother, in that fourth quadrant of the

    individual's pedigree.”

    “That’s a striking peculiarity that’s emerged.

It’s the case with Significance, and with horses

by Snitzel and Not A Single Doubt, the only

    successful Danehill duplications have also

    come through that exact pattern.”

A Danehill study by Jenkins conducted up

to April this year shows proof.

    Horses bearing a double-male Danehill

duplication had a historic stakes-winners to

runners ratio of 2.24 per cent. Recent cases

include this year’s Golden Slipper winner

Farnan (a 3x4 by a Not A Single Doubt), and

fellow Group 1 winners Prompt Response

    (a 3x3 by Redoute’s Choice’s son Beneteau),

    Amphitrite and The Mission.

    Horses with a sex-balanced Danehill

duplication had a stakes-winners to runners

ratio of 3.59 per cent. That’s more than 50 per

cent bigger than the double-male ratio. The

quality is higher too, with examples including

Verry Elleegant, Sunlight, Guelph and Bivouac.

    The double-daughter ratio was similarly

stronger than double-male, at 3.47 per cent.

While these ratios might not seem huge

at face value (Redoute’s Choice, for example,

has his own stakes-winners to runner ratio

of around 11.7%), when you consider the

data includes the records of all of Danehill’s

multitudinous offspring – the many flops

included - we can then see how concentrating

on his proven sires can bear rich fruit.

Not A Single Doubt, for example, when put

with non-Danehill line mares who have a line

of Danehill maternally, has a whopping stakes-

winners to runners ratio of 18.75 per cent. For

    Snitzel, it’s 9.09 per cent.

In the end, much of all this comes back

to the scientific evidence that far more data is

carried in an X chromosome, (of which females

have two), than in a Y (males having one of

    each).

Back to Significance, sadly the chances to

test these theories some more were curtailed in

the spring when Aqua Bella died giving birth to

    a Zoustar filly.

Her yearling colt by the Danehill-free

Written Tycoon will be offered at the Gold

    Coast next month.

And Glentree has retained Aqua Bella’s

remaining offspring, a filly who was retired

unraced due to injuries, but who might put

Jenkins’ theories to the test in the breeding

barn, given that she’s by Snitzel.

Analysis: Toorak Affair, winner of the Hobart Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) in

February, took her consistent record to 13 wins and eight placings from

38 starts in scoring here. Having her second run this preparation, she

settled near the tail of the field (on the rails), tracking a quick tempo.

She improved along the inner rounding the turn, took a split at the 100m

and finished strongly to win well. Mystical Pursuit had a good trip in fifth

place on the rails, continued along the rails at the turn and set out after

the leader (Ruettiger) on straightening. She challenged at the 100m and

then fought well for second. The favourite Mandela Effect settled back in

seventh place (one off the rails) but was under riding from the 600m. He

was still well back on turning for home and gradually responded, arriving

in time to claim third from Ruettiger, who ran a bold race in the lead

before tiring late for fourth. [KB]
