“Drama, as many teachers are discovering, is not only fun and natural for children, it also encourages emotional growth, motivation, and engagement. And one form of drama, known as Reader's Theater, has been found to be particularly effective in building reading fluency. Called simply "RT" by many advocates, Reader's Theater can also boost listening and speaking skills, enhance confidence, and transform reluctant readers into book lovers.” Prescott, 2003.TRANSCRIPT

WHY READER’S THEATER?
“Drama, as many teachers are discovering, is not only fun and natural for children, it also encourages emotional growth, motivation, and engagement. And one form of drama, known as Reader's Theater, has been found to be particularly effective in building reading fluency. Called simply "RT" by many advocates, Reader's Theater can also boost listening and speaking skills, enhance confidence, and transform reluctant readers into book lovers.”Prescott, 2003.
Moody Elementary School will begin holding “Dinner and a Show” at our media center. During this program, students will perform a reader’s theater while parents and community members enjoy refreshments. We will have this program 4 times throughout the year: Kindergarten will be held in September, 1st grade will be held in November, 2nd grade will be held in February, and 3rd grade will be held in April. Grade levels will be further broken up into individual classes to ensure any child that wishes to participate has the opportunity to do so.
In the months leading up to their show, classes will choose their reader’s theater and practice it during their assigned library times throughout the week. During these times, students will also be given materials and craft supplies to make costumes and props if they wish.

Everyone Is Welcome!!! Invitations and RSVP cards, made by
the students, will be sent out two weeks before each show. We will also put the RSVP number on the school’s website and welcome sign in front of the school.
On the night of… The PTO will help with
costs of food and drinks. We will serve soft drinks and water, as well as finger foods. On the night of the event, there will be approximately 7-8 ten minute reader’s theaters performed by the grade level. We expect the entire program to last about an hour and a half.
