To us, it’s not a direction, it’s a way of life. It’s about being the first. The only. The best. It’s about reaching higher, looking deeper, thinking bigger. Because there’s nothing to gain from dreaming small.

At the University of Maine, you’ll find courses that challenge you, research that will stretch your mind and professors who demand excellence. And you will deliver.

But you’ll also have fun. You’ll make friends for life. You’ll hike and kayak and bike and ski. Or you’ll pursue your own passions.

And when you graduate, as one student says, you’ll still be the same person you are today. Just a better version.

Raise your expectations.

Come up to the University of Maine.

Proven Career SuccessWhat can you do with a UMaine degree?University of Maine alumni have gone on to win the Nobel Peace Prize. The Pulitzer Prize. The Oscar. The Tony. Become a Maine governor. Serve in the U.S. Senate. Write best-selling novels. Play for the National Football League, National Hockey League and Major League Baseball. All of that is awesome. But right about now, in this economy, you’d be happy if you could get a job after graduation. Maybe go on to grad school. Well, you’re in luck:

Last time we checked, 84 percent of recent UMaine graduates had found jobs — 65 percent full time, 19 percent part-time. And 29 percent went on to grad school.

What are they doing?Working in banks, advertising agencies, nonprofits, insurance companies, laboratories and engineering firms. Launching start-up companies. Teaching math to inner-city kids. One of them played Abe Lincoln in a Geico insurance television commercial. Another starred in the touring Broadway production of “Sweeney Todd.”

Alumni have contributed

to building America’s

infrastructure — Hoover Dam,

the Colorado Aqueduct, the

San Francisco Bay Bridge

and many more.

How did UMaine prepare them?Ninety-one percent of recent alumni who are employed in a job related to their degree said UMaine prepared them well for their career. Ninety-four percent of recent alumni enrolled in graduate school said UMaine prepared them well for their advanced degrees.

UMaine Career Center

provides career counseling

support and on-campus

career fairs.

And what is the average salary of recent undergraduate alumni? The typical salary for recent UMaine graduates was $41,400. Oh, and the engineers made around $52,000.

So, what can you do with a UMaine degree?A better question might be: What can’t you do?

Statistics are based on survey responses from Life After UMaine, administered in 2011 by UMaine’s Office of Institutional Studies.

Nine hundred secondary school counselors were surveyed to determine

which schools they believed provide the best opportunity

for success — UMaine was among their TOP 100.

The University of Maine Museum of Art displays works from UMaine’s permanent collection — think Warhol and Picasso — along with well-known contemporary artists. The Hudson Museum houses a wealth of antiquities, including a world-class collection of pre-Columbian artifacts.

SustainabilityOfficially, UMaine’s school colors are two shades of blue, but they could be a million shades of green. That’s why UMaine cited as a national leader in sustainability by the Princeton Review. On campus, four buildings are LEED-certified, the national standard for green construction. Students reclaim used bicycles, paint them blue and make them available to check out for a month at a time. Students actively promote sustainability through the Green Campus Initiative and Green Team.

Musical GroupsHere’s something to sing about: there are 15 musical groups on campus — everything from University Singers, an advanced concert choir that tours the Northeast each spring and travels to Europe every four years, to the Pride of Maine Black Bear marching band.

Resources, programming and services help first-year students get to know their classmates, make the most of their academics and prepare for the realities of college, while opening the door to the many new opportunities available at UMaine.

FIRST-YEAR SUCCESSDormitoriesThere are 18 residence halls on campus that provide supportive communities for adjusting to living in the United States and to university life in general.

FoodAt UMaine, you’ll find American comfort foods in addition to custom stir-fry, spicy curries, burritos, sushi and the best Buffalo chicken wrap around. And there are always vegetarian options.

Dining options abound:• Wells Central• Bear’s Den• Oakes Room Café• Bear Bites Too• York Dining• Hilltop Dining• Two convenience markets

Floor PlanThere are a variety of dorm room styles. The most common is the “shared room,” where two students share a room, like the example here (left). Each room includes two beds, desks, chairs, closets, dressers and one microfridge.

What’s the hottest spot on campus? UMaine’s new $25 million New Balance Student Recreation Center. This spa-like facility boasts enough free weights and cardio equipment so you’ll never have to wait in line.

Here you can work with a personal trainer, play intramural or club sports, join a pickup basketball game and take part in dozens of classes, including yoga, Zumba, kickboxing and spinning. Looking for something a little less intense? Relax in the pool, hot tub or sauna.

The Recreation Center is located right next to DeMeritt Forest’s 24+ km of trails. Strap on your rented skis or snowshoes, and access the trails just a few steps from the back door.
