I know it’s too early to think about Advent and Christmas in this Oakleaf Newslet-ter, but since this issue will the last Oakleaf of 2016, perhaps I need to share a few thoughts.
First of all, I am very much looking forward to spending my " rst Christmas at Thou-sand Oaks and I hope to enjoy all your Christmas Traditions at UMCTO. I also know how Christmas can be if we are not careful. After all, you’ve heard this statement before, right?: “I think in many ways, we’ve lost Christmas.” It seems every year, we begin the season with that unfortunate sentiment. Of course, I speak in part of the commercialism that has overcome the holiday spirit, but I also speak in part of the pressure we put on ourselves trying to make Christmas sentimental, perfect and wistful. We spend way too much money that we don’t have on “things.” We beat ourselves to death in trying to attend all the festivities and events. How often do we say on December 26 “Well, Christmas is over,” and yet if we are honest, we breathe a sigh of relief?
I think of Charlie Brown who goes seeking " ve cents psychiatric help over the over-commercialization of Christmas, and only when Linus shares the biblical story does Charlie “get it.” I think I get it. Jesus is the “reason for the season.” I earnestly desire to “put Christ back into Christmas.” Yet, the feelings, the nostalgia, the busy-ness, the hype that we so associate with Christmas can be invasive. So what do we do? Well, we are going to keep things simple during Advent at UMCTO. Our theme for this year’s Advent will be: “Simple Gifts of Advent: Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.” Maybe, some of you have already included those four simple gifts in your “40 Days of Thanks” Gratitude Journal. Each Advent Sunday we will focus on God’s Simple Gifts of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. In doing so I hope that you and I will " nd Christ-mas that God has in store for us. You will " nd it in our worship, participating in our Christmas Traditions at UMCTO, partaking of Holy Communion, singing carols, bring-ing food to the hungry and toys to children, in fellowship, in Christmas Eve Services, praying for peace in the world, etc. And yes, Jesus still is the reason for the season. How will you " nd Him? May the Grace of God help all of us to " nd Christ of Bethle-hem this Christmas! See you at Church, Pastor John

DECEMBER - LAS POSADAS 2016!
Maria Reyes and the Multicultural Committee are making plans for the annual Las Posadas. Actually, this Advent we will have at least two opportunities for Posada celebrations. Robert González & youth from UMCTO will partner with students from TO High School for one on 12/15, and we host another here at UMCTO through Fiesta Church on 12/17. Traditionally, Las Posadas are a series of community processions commemorating the journey of Mary and Joseph looking for lodging on their way to Bethle-hem.

Wo r s h i p We are a “s inging” people.
come on, IT’S CHRISTMAS!Gabe and the UMCTO choir are planning a Christmas concert extravaganza that you won’t want to miss! Tickets will soon be available, so watch for that. If you want to participate in the choir, I understand you don’t even have to carry a tune! Well, maybe that, but you don’t have to be a professional!
Plan on this evening of merry seasonal music - a time to rest and truly enjoy this special time of year; a respite from all the " nal, crazy, push to Christmas Day obligations and activities!
Tell your neighbors!

STEPHEN MINISTERS - JUST A CALL AWAY DURING THE HOLIDAYS
The wonderful Holidays are quickly coming upon us, Thanksgiving, a time to be thankful for what God has done for us thru the year, Then the arrival of Christmas, a time to remember a child was born in a lowly manger in Bethlehem, over 2000 years ago!
But, circumstances weren’t great for Mary and Joseph, they had their own crisis!
For some people, the Holidays are joyous, with family and friends; for others, there is sadness, loneliness or anxiety, due to loss of a loved one, illness, family far away or isolation due to broken relationships or loss of a job.
Here at UMCTO we are blessed to have Ste-phen Ministry, an outreach ministry consisting of Stephen Ministers, caring Christian people who come by your side in your time of need.
In our church, to get in touch with Stephen Ministry, you may call Susan Ruwhiu at #818-889-9931 or the Church at #805-495-7215. May you have joy & peace this Holiday season.

SANTA LUCIA COMES TO UMCTO
For the " rst time ever, a Santa Lucia Program & Swedish Christmas Shop will be held here at UMC-TO in Dickerson Hall. This event is a fundraiser for the Vasa Order of America, Oak Leaf Lodge #685. Although this program has been held in the past at California Lutheran University, the organizers felt they needed a larger venue, so asked Trustees if they could use our facility.
Lisa Dackow, chairman of the Oak Leaf Lodge, has been associated with our church for many years, through Boy Scout Troop #716, and Conejo Valley Days BBQ. She served as the Advancement Chair-person for the troop from 2000 - 2007, so worked closely with Dr. Charles Macune and Tom Skinner. With references like those, the Trustees didn’t have to deliberate long before giving their approval.
Entry donation: $5 (will be waived for church members) will include bev-erages of co% ee, tea, hot cocoa, lingonberry dringk and non-alcoholic Grog. Visitors will be encouraged to bring a canned food item for Manna.
Date: December 10 Time: 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
Food: Swedish meatball meal will cost additional $5, and there will be homemade Scandinavian craft items and Christmas decorations for sale at the Christmas Shop.
Program:The Lucia Program will occur twice so people can see the program earlier or later. Lisa said the program re-lates to Santa Lucia, the patron Saint of Light and the story of a great famine in Sweden when a large ship came across Lake Vanern with Santa Lucia at the bow, in a white robe, encircled in light. She distributed large amounts of food to the starving people. She came to symbolize benevolence, charity, and good fortune, as well as light, so asking attendees to bring a canned food donation is particu-larly appropriate.

C o m m u n i t y Mi Casa es Su Casa!
Our Women on Wednesday ladies (Mom’s group) are having our annual Operation Christmas Child shoe box wrapping party on Wednesday, November 16, at 9:30am in the Wesley Room. We will be listening to Christmas music, wrapping boxes, chatting about life, and of course, eating (potluck breakfast).
For those who don’t know what Operation Christmas Child is, it is a ministry of Samaritan’s Purse. You ! ll a shoe box with a variety of gifts you think a boy or girl would love... a toy or two, some hygiene items, some school supplies, socks, etc... The shoe boxes will be delivered to needy children somewhere in the world. The child who receives the box is also o" ered an op-portunity to learn more about Jesus through a Bible
OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
Hi May and Annie (Lindo),I just got back from taking Randy Harold to UCLA, so I thought I would give you an update.
In the summer I took him for a liver biopsy—an all-day event that would help to shape a plan for his future treatment.
Today I took him for a consultation with his doctor, to get the evaluation.
Randy has had a really tough time lately. He was in the hospital with sinus infection, has to be wearing a boot on his one foot, and last night he went to the ER at 1:00 am because he experienced a loss of vision.
They couldn’t help him much with his vision, but it seems to be slowly returning.
Clown Corners On the way to UCLA, Randy was deeply depressed. He felt physically miserable, and said he was think-ing about canceling all his treatment plans—he just couldn’t go on like this much longer. It broke my heart to hear him speak this way—I couldn’t o" er much comfort. I told him to listen to his doctor be-fore he made any big decisions.
After his visit with the doctor, the nurse wheeled him back to the waiting room. Randy was grinning, and as he left the nurse, he said, “Clowns Rule!” She high-! ved and responded, “Clowns Rule!”That seemed like a big emotional improvement! The doctor had told him that his liver biopsy turned out very good results. That was the last hurdle, and he is now o$ cially “on the list” for a kidney donation. The di" erence in him was unbelievable! He said he is ready to face whatever God has planned for him. When we got back to T.O, we went out to dinner at Mimi’s with his Mom & Dad—a very festive end to a most challenging week.
Randy says he loves having Pastor John visit him. I hope we can all keep praying for God’s blessings for him and his family.I am so thankful that I have gotten to know Randy over the last 2 years—he and his family mean so much to me!

And, we would love for you to join us at our party on Nov. 16! If you can not attend our party, and want to participate in this great ministry with your family, just deliver your ! lled shoe boxes to the church o$ ce any time before November 16 and they will be included in our party and prayer time.
I would like to encourage those who are partici-pating in the reading program to nish reading all those interesting books, and then complete their reading forms.
I will need them by the end of November. The district program resource person needs them by December 15, 2016. Thank you all for participat-ing this year.

UMW MEMBERS VISIT LIGHTHOUSE from Lois Sheen
On October 24th, 8 UMW members delivered 47 # eece prayer blankets and 30 “blessing bags”, as-sembled at our Fall Luncheon, to the Ventura County Rescue Mission’s Lighthouse for Women and Children in Oxnard. The Director, Christina Marroquin, led the group on a tour of the emergency shelter and the residence for women enrolled in the 2-year Life Recovery Program and their children.
While on the tour, Gerry Mortimer and Annie Lindo met up with one of the residents currently enrolled in the Life Recovery Program whom they knew from their monthly visits to the Emergency Shelter. They were delighted to see she was much changed for the better. The woman, who rst came to the Lighthouse when she was pregnant, reported her older child, who formerly had behavioral issues, was much improved. The younger child is now 8 months old and is doing ne. This serendipitous moment was a remarkable witness to the program’s e! ectiveness.
The Lighthouse for Women and Children, serving homeless single women and women with children, established its Life Recovery program in 1998, o! ering a transitional living program that included a program for recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. In December of 2003, the Lighthouse established a year-round emergency shelter that also serves as an over# ow shelter when the two domestic violence shelters in the County are full.
Today, with an overall capacity of 112 beds, the Lighthouse o! ers a full range of care speci cally tailored to the needs of homeless women and children by o! ering shelter, intervention, sub-stance abuse recovery, case management, educa-tion, life skills development, vocational training, employment, and transitional housing.

MORE NATIVITY SETS, PLEASE from Tracy Diestel
This year we are only making 12 sets. The nativities have a small adjustment that will make them easier to ship, thanks to Dick Wiley’s innovations. He has tweaked the template so pieces can be screwed together and then unscrewed for easy storage. It actually gives the sets a more 3-D look.
It has been a blessing to be a part of this ministry over the last several years, and it reminds me of what the Christmas season is all about. Especially when we see one of our nativities in other communities. Wish we could continue forever and like my original dream, have every Christian display a nativity.
We currently need paint-ers to help get the sets done by Thanksgiving. If you can help, please contact Tracy Diestel at [email protected]
Peace,Tracy Diestel

Won’t that come in handy when shopping for Christmas gifts??
Sue Robb comes prepared.
Just before Callum Atworth turned 3-months old his family noticed something wasn’t right. He was very pu" y, his eyes were yellowish and he was turning extremely pale. Callum’s Mom, Alyssa, rushed him to the hospital and as he was being registered into the E.R. A nurse came around to put a name band on Callum and literally dropped everything to run to the phone to call for additional medical assistance. In just minutes, there was a team of medical sta" sur-rounding Callum and Alyssa. With a team of 15 or more hospital sta" rushing to save Callum, they let Alyssa know that he was a very sick boy. Callum had very little blood in his body and was hypothermic and classi# ed as an “in extremis” or at an extreme

Callum was diagnosed with Diamond-Blackfan Ane-mia, a rare disease he will have for the rest of his life where the bone marrow fails to produce enough red blood cells, which carries oxygen to the body’s tis-sues. With only 700 con# rmed cases in the world, this now little 8-year-old depends on monthly blood transfusions to literally save his life.

A WORD ABOUT THE ADVENT WREATH
If you’re like me, you’ve seen advent wreaths every year and totally know they represent the four weeks before Christmas. But, what’s with that pink candle? What is the order of lighting, is it Peace, Joy, Hope and Love; or Joy, Hope, Peace and Love? I asked our expert on all things in the sanctuary, Shirley Hamilton and she provided the following;
The circle of the wreath reminds us of the eternal God; no beginning and no end.Candles symbolize the light of God coming into the world through the birth of his Son.The four outer candles represent the period of wait-ing during the 4 Sundays of Advent, which them-selves symbolize the four centuries of waiting be-tween the prophet Malachi and the birth of Christ. Three purple or blue candles correspond with the colors of Advent and then, there is that one pink or rose candle....
1st candle - purple/blue - represents HOPE2nd candle - purple/blue - represents PEACE3rd candle - pink/rose - represents JOY at the soon Advent of the Christ. It marks a shift from the more solemn tone of the " rst two Sundays that focus on Preparation and Hope, to a more joyous atmosphere f anticipation and expectancy.4th candle - purple/blue - represents LOVE
The CENTER candle is white and is the Christ Candle, to be lit on Christmas Eve. The central location of the Christ candle reminds us that the incarnation is the heart of the season, giving light to the world.
