Come Celebrate the History of the Clay Hill - Allison Creek Community 5780 Allison Creek Rd, York, SC 29745 Allison Creek Presbyterian Church presents a festival that centers around the life of Elias Hill, a formerly enslaved man who led the migration of 166 freed slaves from York County to Liberia after facing acts of terrorism by the Ku Klux Klan during the Reconstruction Era. The festival will bring to life the rich history of the formally known Clay Hill Community, which grew up around Hill’s Iron Works and Plantation. Activities include guided tours by interpreters dressed in Reconstruction Era period clothing. This year's tours start with a visit to the sanctuary, where Rev. Elias Hill delivers a sermon. Then the tour weaves through two historic cemeteries to hear the stories of church founders, former slaves and those freed blacks who led the journey from York to Liberia. Also featured: musical performances by choirs from churches founded by freed blacks after the Emancipation Proclamation; Period games and activities for children and adults; a photo exhibit depicting the lives of the freed blacks who left York SC to become founders of Liberia, as well as photos from the journey taken by church members to Liberia last year.
