Maryland BasketballBRENDA FRESEHead Coach

In her fifth season overall as a head coach, BrendaFrese has already made the quick turnaround she isknown for to a young Maryland squad.

A 1993 Arizona graduate and a native of CedarRapids, Iowa, the 2002 Associated Press NationalCoach of the Year is looking towards making the nextstep in the rebuilding process and taking the Terpsback the national power they once were. This sea-son, she had already guided the Terps to 11 wins, more than last year (10), as they ran out to their beststart in ACC play since the 1991-92 season going 3-0 in the league, one conference victory less than theywon a year ago.

Maryland ended the 2002-03 season with a 10-18 overall mark, Frese’s first season at the Terrapinhelm, with eight losses coming by 10 points or less. The Terps also took several steps in the right direc-tion, including breaking 100 points in a game for thefirst time since 1993, claiming the team’s first ACCroad win since the 2000-01 season and drawing acrowd of 5,078, the largest since Feb. 24, 1996.

In five overall seasons as a head coach, Fresehas put together a 78-52 (.605) career record, includ-ing a 21-21 mark in College Park, making amazingturnarounds along the way. Starting her career as anassistant coach at Kent State and Iowa State, shetook over the head coaching duties at Ball State in2000. Prior to her arrival, Ball State had gone 66-169.In Frese’s two seasons there, she guided the Cardi-nals to a 16-13 record in her first season then led theteam to a school-record 19-9 mark, while receivingvotes in the AP poll and climbing as high as No. 28.Her next stop was at Minnesota where she led aGolden Gopher team that went 8-20 to a 22-8 record, advancing to the NCAA Tournament second roundand achieving a No. 18 national ranking in the finalAP regular season poll, while along the way break-ing several school records.

For her successes, Frese has earned confer-ence and national accolades. She was named MAC

Coach of the Year in 2000 asmentor of the Cardinals and

was then selected Big Tenand AP National Coachof the Year in 2002 afterher stint as head coach at

Minnesota. In her 10seasons as a coach,

she has helped herteams to four NCAATournament appear-ances and advanc-ing to the NCAAElite Eight in 1999. Frese has alsohit the recruitingtrails hard and the

work seems to havepaid off. On Nov. 12,2003, she announcedthe signing of four ofthe nation’s top re-cruits. The class wasrated No. 2 by theBlue Star Report, giving solidifyingFrese’s reputationas one of the top re-cruiting coaches inthe nation.
