BMC officer Ramesh Desai captures the essence of Maharashtras Jyotiba festivalwith his debut show which features a series of photographs in magenta hue
VARIETY
Every year on the day of chaitrashuddha poornima, a full moonday that falls in the month ofApril, thousands of people gather
in Kolhapur to celebrate Jyotiba. RameshDesai, who works as an officer in theassessment and collection department of
the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC), has been attending the festivalevery year without fail. He displays thecolourful customs and traditions of the fes-tival with his debut photography exhibi-tion.
The Jyotiba festival celebrates the wed-ding of God Jyotibas (considered the kingof the southern region) sister Yammai. TheGod is getting ready to attend the weddingof his sister and the festival describes theritual from morning until evening. Forme, the main attraction of the festivalis the Sasankhati, says Desai. These are huge decoratedbamboo stickswhich are up
to 30 feet high. As a custom, people danceto the tune of folk music while they taketurns carrying the Sasankathi on theirhead or shoulders. The sticks are veryheavy and sometimes the person carryingit needs help to lift them high.
Crucial care is taken so that the sticksdo not fall on the ground as it brings badluck. In mythology, Sasankhati wereerected in the memory of the wives of thedemons who were killed by Jyotiba. It is
believed that the three gods LordBrahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva cametogether in the form of Jyotiba to destroy
the army of a wickeddemon called
Ratnasur. Not lessthan 2000 sticksare traditionally
involved in
the procession. Its an amazing affair. As a symbol of the marriage celebra
tion, people shower themselves and thtemple with magenta coloured gulal. Thwhole place is drenched in gulal. Its thmost beautiful sight of the festival, sayDesai. By afternoon when the Sasankathprocession is over, Jyotibas horse is readied for the journey to his sisters place. Thhorse is also bathed in gulal, which is collected as a form of blessing in outstretche
sheets of cloth encircling the animal fromall sides.A man seated on a camel goes around
beating drums and canons are fired signalling that the God is dressed and readyto move. In the evening he is carried on Palanquin to his sister Yammais templeLot of newly married couples visit thtemple for Jyotibas blessings, says DesaiIt is believed that a visit during the festival ensures a happy married life.
The Jyotiba photography exhibition is on a
Primal Art Gallery, NCPA, till Saturday, July 9
