Carol Stark-Sorg, President

Loveland Rotary Club

On behalf of Thompson Valley Rotary Club, I am honored to

welcome you to the 22nd Governor’s Invitational Art Show &

Sale.

I have personally been involved with the Art Show for

the past 20 years and have enjoyed every moment of it,

from painting pedestals, setting up displays, selling art

pieces (sometimes with funny hats for recognition),

working on the art show committee, and this year

representing my club as president. I feel this is a

wonderful show and hope that you enjoy the exciting selection of

paintings and sculptures designed by Colorado artists.

Each year, our club sponsors a local student with an art scholarship from

proceeds of this show. We give significant contributions to several local

community and youth organizations, as well as to Rotary International

projects including water filtration systems, cooking stoves homes and

medical boxes in Nicaragua and the eradication of Polio worldwide.

Have fun at the show and thank you for your generous support.

CAROLYN L. BARLOCKDENVER, COLORADO

Denver native Carolyn L. Barlock first experimented with secret techniques ofporcelain decoration which fascinated ancient alchemists. Mastering enameledart, she continued her scholarly journey of ancient porcelain techniquesculminating in her use of 22 Karat Florentine Gold and ancient Persian Lustersdating from 9th Century Baghdad. These resplendent pieces of timeless beautyand exquisite form are fired from twenty to sixty or more times at intense heat.

Her singular development as a porcelain artist was integrating chiseling techniques which giveher one-of-a-kind pieces a special blend of innovation and classicism. Carolyn Barlock hasbeen an annual participant of Loveland, Colorado’s Sculpture in the Park since 1997, and sheis featured in Southwest Art’s Sculpture of the Rockies. She also won two Gold Medals at the 2012International Porcelain Artists Show for her work. For more information please visit: www.columbinensg.com, www.gallery1261.com,

JAMES BIGGERSESTES PARK, COLORADO

James Biggers’ goal is to portray emotion – togive his paintings such depth that viewers cango beyond what initially draws them in.“When someone tells me that they have hadone of my paintings for years and can still feelemotion toward it, then I know I have

succeeded as an artist,” says James, who feels that the “heartof a painting” is the most essential part. “Technique is whatattracts people to a painting but heart is what keeps themthere.” He feels the best way to capture “heart” is to paintfrom life and to continually search for new subject material. He has traveled across the United States, Costa Rica,Mexico, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Italy, Germany, Switzerland,Austria, France and Africa. His work is found in numerousprivate and public collections.

Ross began selling his work in galleries in 1996.“I paint what I feel and what I like, and hope there will be people

who agree with me. My focus is on color, value, aerial perspective, andthe physical logic that defines what we see. And of course, I am always trying tocapture the impression that attracted me to the image in the first place. history of the painting. I try to keep my mind open and receptive to new ideas, always looking for theunexpected. The freer I am with the paint, the less I try to control the results, the better. I am alwayslooking for that sweet spot, where a painting retains spontaneity but has a cohesive feel.”

LYSE DZIJALOVELAND, COLORADO

SHERI FARABAUGHTHORNTON, COLORADO

It is a constant source ofwonder to me that withnothing but a squeeze ofpaint, some good brushes, anda receptive surface you can tella story. Transparency,

reflections, the power of a flowing stream, abeam of sunshine illuminating the edges ofmy subject, can all be created on canvas. Thehope of pulling off that little miracle everynow and then is what brings me to the canvasalmost every day. Finding beauty in thedetails has led me to a realistic style. Igenerally want to capture my subject as it is,editing only to achieve good composition orto lend emphasis to a particular aspect of thatsubject. I use multiple thin layers of paintuntil the desired effect is achieved, with alittle impasto for the lightest areas.

ALYSON KINKADELOVELAND, COLORADO

“For years the vast open plains have in-trigued me in their simple beauty. I re-call hours of watching the landscapespan past me in bands of color from thebackseat of our Buick station wagon dur-ing family cross-country trips. I am still

mesmerized by this understated beauty. The landscapearound me has shaped my aesthetic. The horizon has captivated me, first as a visual ex-

panse, secondly as a symbol of the human condition. Each goal we strive for becomes a line in our near ordistant future. For me, these horizons are about ourtransitions, representing goals and aspirations, the pos-sibilities of what lies ahead, and intention for the fu-ture. As we reach a goal, others may appear. [Isuppose it depends upon the ambitiousness of a per-son, but it is my observation that human nature isto stretch our reach.]While the landscapes become reflections of my

personal relation with the world, the viewer often doesnot see this translation. The fact that they may readinto it their own story makes me want to share suchimagery more.”

MARTIN LAMBUTHDENVER, COLORADO

in the weeds, these vehicles can still take you on a ride to grandpa’s farm or bumping down a countryroad in dad’s pickup. And it’s about shapes—large, round fenders and amazing grills that take on thecharacteristics of a smiling face—complemented by weather-influenced finishes.

An award-winning artist, Martin has been juried into local, regional and national shows, including the 2012Cherry Creek Arts Festival which featured his vintage truck paintings. expansive. Coining myself a Contemporary Naturalist, my workdepicts both terrestrial and aquatic subjects.Acknowledging my education, my approach can be described

quickly as a combination of the plays on impressionist painters“Spirit of Place” & contemporary applications like JacksonPollock’s “targeted paint” technique.

DAVE SANTILLANESFOR T COLLINS, COLORADO

A native of Colorado, Dave Santillanes beganoil painting after graduating from ColoradoState University with a BFA in graphic design. His early painting explorations quickly mergedwith his love of the outdoors and, naturally, oilpaint and a field easel became part of his

outdoor gear. His explorations into oil painting and thewilderness continue. Dave’s work is characterized by a realistic rendering of color,

light and atmosphere. To capture these elusive elements, eachstudio painting begins in the field with a plein air study. Thisdirect approach allows Dave to achieve a realism unattainablethrough photographic studies alone. And while directobservation is important to studying the physical aspects ofcolor and light, Dave also believes that “painting outdoorsbrings a spiritual intimacy with the scene” allowing him to‘speak’ with complete sincerity in the final painting.Dave’s passion for painting has led to a number of recent

awards including an Award of Excellence at the 2012 OilPainters of America National Show and Artists Choice at the Zion Natiaonal ParkPlein Air Event. His work was also featured in the December 2011 issue of Southwest Art Magazine.

Dean Russell Thompson is a fulltime artist and printmaker workingin Loveland Colorado. “I love theprocess of printmaking. It is a cere-bral activity allowing plenty of timeexperiment and to contemplate the

desired result. At the same time, the marks can bevery expressive and spontaneous, in their own in-direct way. Working in multiple processes as I do,I have a nearly infinite range of combinations andcharacteristics that can be brought to bear on animage. At the same time, in order to harness thatflexibility, you have to be meticulous with yourprocesses. It must appeal to the geek in me.”His work focuses on the unseen landscape of

infrastructure that supports our modern society.“These are the structures and machines that makeour daily lives possible. We pass by them every day but most of us never really see them.”Dean turned to art relatively recently after a long career as an engineer. “I have always used both sides of my brain:

the creative and the analytical. That probably shows in both my imagery and my choice of media”.

LANI VLAANDNERENDRAKE, COLORADO

C.S. Lewis wrote “The longings whicharise in us when we first fall in love, orfirst think of some foreign country, orfirst take up some subject that excitesus, are longings which no marriage,no travel, no learning, can really

satisfy... There was something we grasped at, in thatfirst moment of longing, which just fades away inthe reality.” My art is an attempt to suspend that“moment of longing”, that moment when youknow there is more, beyond ourselves, beyond whatwe see, beyond the sum of the parts.

Lani’s work has won national awards, includingthe Judge’s Award of Merit in the Arts for the ParksShow, Portrait Award for Oil Painters of America,Best Body of Work for Rocky Mountain Plein AirPainters in which she is a signature member, andother awards of merit.
