MAHJONG ………….. “A game that originated in China, commonly played by four players (with some three-player variations found in Korea and Japan). Similar to the Western card game rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and calculation and involves a certain degree of chance.” And from what I understand --- it is also a lot of fun!

AGING WELL IS ALSO A NEWSPAPER COLUMN!

Every other Saturday the Laconia Citizen publishes our Newspaper Column that usually has something to do with aging issues --- But you can also find it on our Facebook Page, on our Website or just by asking for copy. I can also add you to an Email list if you would like a copy sent to you automatically. The most recent column is entitled ‘Turning 90’ and is about some lessons that motorcycle week can teach us about successful aging.

PLANTING TIME!

What better reason to get outside than to do a little

planting? The flower boxes at the front look great as

do the garden areas that branching off to the sides --- I

should know the names of the flowers that you will

see photos of later in this edition (but I don’t). The

front sign is looking great --- and unless I’m guessing

wrong the new addition is a hummingbird feeder.

Prosaic \proh-ZAY-ik\ adjective

DID YOU KNOW?

In the 1600s, any text that was not poetic was prosaic. Back then, "prosaic" carried no negative connotations; it simply indicated that a written work was made up of prose. That sense clearly owes much to the meaning of the word's Latin ancestor "prosa," which meant "prose." By the end of the 17th century, though, poetry had come to be viewed as the more beautiful, imaginative, and emotional type of writing, and prose was relegated to the status of mundane and plain-Jane. As a result, English speakers started using "prosaic" to refer to anything considered matter-of-fact or ordinary, and they gradually transformed it into a synonym for "colorless," "drab," "lifeless," and "lackluster."

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES PRESENTS:

“THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT”

“PART II” 7:30 in the Community Room

This represents MGM's 1976 sequel to

its enormously successful compilation

film That's Entertainment (1974). In lieu

of the multi-narrator device of the first

film, director Gene Kelly chooses to limit

the hosting chores to two people:

himself, and his friendly rival Fred

Astaire. Another departure from the first

film was the decision to include comedy

and dramatic highlights from MGM's

past, with such stars as Greta Garbo

(seen in a montage of "I want to be

alone"s), Greer Garson, Katharine

Hepburn, Cary Grant, Jean Harlow,

Wallace Beery, Marie Dressler, Red

Skelton, the Marx Brothers, and Laurel

and Hardy (though the last-named

team's vignettes are culled from Hal

Roach productions which were merely

released by MGM). Be sure and catch That's Entertainment from the beginning

for Saul Bass’ opening credits, incorporating a variety of title-sequence styles:

waves crashing on the shore, pages turning in a book, and a J. Arthur Rank-style

FROM THE SUGGESTION BOX

A Suggestion was received that the Member

Directory be updated.

A Directory update consists of three parts:

meeting with new Members and writing up a

brief bio, taking a photograph and lastly

publishing. The 2nd and 3rd parts I can do ---

but a Volunteer is needed for that all

important first part……….

Note made to change the Club Calendar to show the Men’s Breakfast to be at

8:30

That was a good catch and in time for me to be able to make the needed change

for this week. I saw the note posted outside the Bistro and adjusted the

breakfast hours accordingly as well.

A very nice comment of appreciation for last week’s Colony News was received.

Thank You!

An observation was made about last weeks suggestion of extending the Grand

Courtyard’s walkway.

I understand the request as being so to allow walkers (in the summer at least)

to avoid the more serious hill at the garage end of the building. Helpful Hint:

To the side of the big garage doors are personal size doors that you can enter

(by card key) and then walk on the level over to the elevator.

Note of support for labeling a panoramic photograph of our mountain views.

Since last week I have received a Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area Trail

Map and while some of those peaks are sure to be represented (e.g. Mt. Shaw)

there are many others not included. You would think that with all the photos I

take that I would know something about taking a panoramic photograph.

There are several ways to do it – but it is most easily done on a panoramic

camera. If I can get the image I can get it printed.

More on Photographs – A thank you for the Rainbow one last week.

That one actually happened to be mine as I was wondering around the hallways

looking to see how you might have decorated for motorcycle week when I

looked out and there it was!

CLOSING NOTES…………….

This week is Motorcyle Week --- For those who might be new to the area --- it means that getting around is a little more complicated – so please plan accordingly. If you can put those appointments off to a later date – it might make sense to do so……… Newspaper Delivery Update ---- Since the beginning we have been blessed by having Volunteers ready and willing to get up early each morning to deliver your newspaper right to your door! That is no longer possible and your newspaper will now await you in the plastic box in the entrance foyer designated for that purpose. I can’t remember if others have done it before her --- but it is certainly with heartfelt appreciation that we can all thank Carolyn Sutcliffe for most recently having taken on that responsibility.

Thank You Carolyn! Diane wants to know who would be interested in outdoor lawn games such as badminton , bocce, horseshoes, shuffle board, croquet or trap? Given that summer only feels like it is 3 weeks long we all need to make the best of it. Let Diane know what your preferences are………… No Shopping on Wednesday June 19th --- There is going to be a Party Instead!

MORE THIS AND THAT………… Promptness is a good thing --- especially with your Dinner Reservations. The Dining Staff respectfully asks for your timely arrival in order to keep things moving smoothly. Thank you! I don’t know whose idea it was to have an Open House Cocktail Party in Remberance of Barbara Brehm --- but I think it is a great one --- and one that I am sure Barbara would not only approve – but endorse! Barbara was always so easy to photograph. I never had to coax a smile out of her because she was always beaming ----- add to that smile her penchant for a colorful wardrobe and you had some who was truly radiant!

I rather imagine that is how she would like us to remember her and what better way than by raising a glass in her honor. A very special lady who will be missed by us all!
