The Romanovs achieved importance as Boyars of the Grand Duchy of Moscow. A Boyar
was a member of the highest rank of the feudal, Bulgarian, Kievan, Moscovian, Servian,
Wallachian, Moldavian and later Romanian aristocracies. The House of Romanov was a
reigning royal house of Russia from 1613 to 1917.
In the 1600s, a tsar was elected by the name of Michael Romanov. During his reign,
connections with Western Europe started to increase. Catherine the Great expanded
Russia and conquered the Black Sea coast, much of Ukraine, and parts of Poland. Peter
the Great westernize Russia and also took over new lands.
On 17 July 1918, in the wake of the Russian Revolution of 1917, the last Russian royal
family the Romanovs were brutally murdered by Bolshevik revolutionaries.Their deaths
marked the end of a Dynasty that had ruled Russia for more than 300 years and heralded
the Rise of communist Russia.
Essay #2 most common example
The command system, which is also described as Marxism, socialism, or
communism, is both a political and economic philosophy. In a communist
economy, the government owns most of the firms, subsequently controlling
production and allocation of resources. One of the most well-known and well-
documented cases of a communist government took place in the Soviet Union,
beginning in 1917 and eventually falling in 1992. Idealistically, communism
eliminates social classism and provides equal work for all in a particular society.
Essay #3 most common examples
Western Russia is the most populated area. Northern Russia (Siberia) is the
least populated. Western Russia is more populated due to the Capital of
Moscow being there, the climate is warmer, the land is better, there are more
jobs as well. Northern Russia (Siberia) is essentially a frozen wasteland. Russia
has also traditionally exiled prisoners and inserrectionists there.
There are no official figures for the population of Russia in 2016, but the 2010
census, the results of which were released in late 2011 and early 2012, reports
that the official population of Russia was 142.9 million. The most current
estimate for 2019 reports that the population is around 143.90 million. The
Census results are probably the most reliable indicator, but other estimates of
the Russia population are available. Rosstat, the official Government statistics
agency, suggested that the population of Russia in 2011 was 141.8 million, and
the CIA estimated that the population was even lower: 138.7 million.

HUMAN ORIGINSThe Earliest Humans• The era of history before written records is called prehistory.
Scientists believe that early humans first appeared in Africa.
• Archaeologists study this period by examining what early humans left behind. They study artifacts. Objects made by a humans such as; art, tools, and weapons. They also fossils which are the remains of living things such as bones and shells.
HUMAN ORIGINSEarly Human Migration• Hunter-gatherers moved from
place to place, looking for food. They followed the animals that they depended on for food. Eventually they left Africa and spread out across the world. Over time, they learned how to make tools and use fire for cooking, protection, and warmth. They created new ways of life to adapt to their environments.
HUMAN ORIGINSAdapting to Varied Environments• Between about 7000 and 5000 BCE, the evidence suggests that much of the
present-day Sahara had a wetter climate. Hunter-gatherers began raising livestock and herding them across the area’s grasslands.
• The practice of raising livestock on open pastures is known as pastoralism. From prehistoric times to the present, many pastoralists in Africa have been nomadic.
LATER AFRICAN CIVILIZATIONS
Consider other empires you have studied in the past.
• What factors led to their rise?
• What problems caused them to decline?
NORTHERN AND WESTERN AFRICAN EMPIRES• Africa was home to many great
empires.
• Beyond Egypt, empires rose and fell in Mali, Ghana, and Songhai over the centuries.
• These empires…
– created a network of trade routes.
– thrived on trading in gold, salt, and even slaves.
– supported a growing population.
– strengthened the role of Islam in Africa.
EASTERN AND SOUTHERN AFRICAN EMPIRES
• As early empires fell in Eastern Africa, the kingdom of Axum rose. Axum became wealthy by trading with India and Rome. Contact with Rome is probably why modern Ethiopia has a large Christian population today.
EASTERN AND SOUTHERN AFRICAN EMPIRES
• Further south, the Swahiliculture formed by blending people of various trading towns. Swahili and Bantu languages form the basis for many modern African languages.
EUROPEAN CONTROL OF AFRICA
• Many European nations focused on Africa in the 1400s. These nations wanted in on Africa’s resources.
– RUBBER
– DIAMONDS
– PRECIOUS METALS
– PEOPLE
– AND MORE
AFRICA AFTER INDEPENDENCE• European rule of Africa weakened in the
mid-twentieth century. Two world wars had drained Europe’s resources. Demands for independence, or self-rule, began to mount throughout Africa. Pan-Africanism called for Africans to unite and throw off colonial rule.
• Much of West and Central Africa was able to break free of European rule peacefully. However, the nations that arose in their place faced tough challenges. Many collapsed into conflict. In South Africa, a white ruling class still controlled the government.
Pan-Africanism is a political and social movement to strengthen bonds between people of African descent.
NELSON MANDELASouth African leader
(1918–2013)
NELSON MANDELA
• Mandela chose to become a lawyer instead of becoming a clan chief like his father.
• He was arrested for protesting apartheid in 1962.
• While in prison, he rejected offers of freedom that would have required him to speak against his beliefs.
• He won the Nobel Peace Prize with F.W. de Klerk in 1993.
• His birthday, July 18, has been declared Nelson Mandela International Day by the United Nations.
ARAB SPRING• Long after gaining independence, many
African countries had governments that were not democratic. In 2010, a movement for more democracy that came to be known as the Arab Spring began in Tunisia.
• This movement soon spread to many other North African and Southwest Asian countries, where it had mixed results.
– Tunisia
– Algeria
