Colonial Rebellion
in North America Main Idea: Conflicts between Great Britain and the
American colonies escalated, until the colonists finally
declared their independence.
Terms to know: King George III, Samuel Adams, Boston
Massacre, Boston Tea Party, Thomas Jefferson and John
Locke.

British Parliament
Angers Colonists British Parliament enacts the
Sugar Act in 1764. This act is a tax
on the profits of colonialbusinesses.
The colonists thought that the
taxes were unfair because they
had no representation or voice inthe British parliament.

The Stamp Act
Another tax passed by the British
parliament that increased the cost
of doing business. All documents(wills, newspaper, magazine,
playing cards) had to have a stamp
to prove that taxes had been paid.
This added fuel to the colonial fireand led to boycott of British goods.

1774 After the Boston Tea Party, King George
became furious with the colonists.
He pushed parliament to act to punish the colonists.

colonies met to declare their rightsto control their own affairs.
Continental Congress decided to
start the Continental Army to

the Declaration of Independence In 1776, Thomas Jefferson, a lawyer
from Virginia, wrote the Declaration of
I
ndependence. He wrote th
is under th
einfluence of the John Locke, the
Enlightenment and the Magna Carta. He
and the rest of the colonists, felt that they
should be ruled by their own gov¶t. and
not by a tyrant across the AtlanticOcean. This would be the Americans
declaration of freedom and now they
would have to fight for it!
