necessary.WhenprintingoutthePDFfile,ensurethatthe'shrinkoversizedpagestopapersize'is

uncheckedinthePrintDialogbox(accessedviaCtrl‐P).

Instructions

1)Centerthetopfabricoverthepatternandtraceallofthedesignontoitusinganartist’swatercolour

pencilormarkerofyourchoice.Itissuggestedthatyoumarkthepositionofthebeadsinadifferentcolour

penciltothosefortheknotstoavoidconfusionlater!

2)Layerthemuslin,waddingandmarkedtoptogetherandtackwithawhitetackingthread.Placeina

quiltingorembroideryhoop.

3)Usingthechenilleneedleandfollowingthediagramsgiven,workalltheColonialknotsusingone

strandofCaronWatercoloursthreadwhereindicatedbyopencircles.Detailedinstructionsforcreating

colonialknotscanbefoundonpage4and5.

4)Quilt(byhandormachine)thedottedlines.

5)Sewinthebeadswhereindicatedbyfilledcircles.Thesemaybequiltedorbackstitchedintoposition.

6)Securethetworibbonlengthsinthecentreofthecushionandfinishoffwithaseedbeadtohidethe

stitches.Tietheribbonsinabowsothattheydon’tgetintheway.

7)Runagatheringthreadalongtheinsideedgeofthewholelengthoflaceandeasethistofitaroundthe

cushionjustoutsidetheinnerofthesolidlinesaroundthepattern.Tackintopositionwiththelacelying

towardsthecentreofthecushion.

8)Witharotarycutter,trimthecushiontopto8inchessquare

9)Withrightsidestogetherpinthecushionbacktothefinishedcushionfront.Beingcarefultoanchorthe

startandendpointswithbackstitches,machinestitcharoundthesidesofthecushiontoleavea4‐inchgap

midwayalongoneside.

10)Turnthecushionright‐sideoutandcheckthatallthelaceissecure.Turntheremainingseamallowances

totheinsideandfingerpressinplace.

11)StuffthecushionwithPolyfillorsimilarandthenslipstitchthe4‐inchgapclosed.

12)Attachringsusingtheribbonstrandsinthecentreofthecushion.

Knot Instructions

1.Makeaknotintheendoftheperléthreadandburythisinthewrongsideofyourwork.

Bringtheneedleandthreadthroughtotherightsideofthefabric,directlyunderadotmarkingaknotposition.

2.Withyourlefthand,holdthethreadabout2”totheleftofwhereitemergesfromthefabric,keepingitstraightandparalleltothefabric.

Withyourrighthand,holdtheneedlewiththepointfacingawayfromyou.Laytheneedleacrossthethreadandrotatetheneedletipdownandaroundthethreadinananticlockwisedirection.

3.Thethreadshouldnowlieclockwisearoundtheneedle.

Withyourlefthand,rotatethethreadoverandthenundertheneedletipinananticlockwisedirection.

4.Thethreadshouldnowbeinafigureofeightaroundtheneedle.

5.Keepingthethreadheldinyourlefthandtaut,pushthetipoftheneedlebackintothefabricclosetowherethethreademerged.

Pulltheneedleandthreadthroughtothewrongside,easingoffthetensionslightlyastheeyeoftheneedlepassesthroughtheformedknot.

6.Pulltheknottight.Bringneedleupatthenextknotpositionandrepeat.

Toendathread,overseworknotoffsecurelyonthewrongsideofyourwork.
