A beautiful oriel covering two floors with a balcony adorns the wall that’s shot through with ran-domly placed trumeau- sculpted windows. An Alsatian bronze cooper by Auguste Bartholdi is the crowning glory of the stunning scribed gable. It serves as a reminder that the building was once used to trade wine. This Gothic and Renaissance-style building was built in 1480 and was once the town’s business and political hub. Its ground floor was used as a warehouse, market and customs house for centuries. It is a fantastic ex-ample of business in a town at the crossroads between Italy and Flanders and the Danube and Champagne. What sets Saint-Martin Collegiate Church apart is the size of its cathedral. Construction began in 1235 and it was completed in the late 14th century. Its austere western wall is weighed down by heavy buttresses. Two towers were originally planned but only the southern one was completed. The transept was completed in 1263, the nave around 1300 and the beautiful choir wasn’t completed until 1400. Miracles happen as soon as you step through the door as you bask in the light, unity and almost organic treatment of the space. This “village in a town” underwent a fantastic restoration plan from 1968 to 1974 thanks to the Malraux Law. Most of the buildings were tanners’ houses. They all date from the 17th and 18th century, are narrow, deep and tall with half-timbering on the upper floors. They stand on a stone base with no foundations or cellars. The houses’ roofs have several hooks that were used to dry hides prepared in the neighbouring stream. The building was built for secular reasons in 1575 next to the former Saint-Jacques Chapel (first mentioned in 1286) which was housed the Town Hall. A vaulted ossuary lies beneath the ground floor guardhouse and upper floor rooms. The loggia, built between 1577 and 1582, its prolific decorative repertoire and gate form an architectural gem of Renaissance architecture in the Upper Rhine. A pretty row of half-timbered houses stand along the Lauch. Most of them were home to boatmen and fishermen who would put their traps in the river. Go along Rue de la Poissonnerie to reach “Little Venice”, the most romantic part of Krutenau, the former market gardener neighbourhood. The market gardeners would sail along the Lauch to transport their goods to town on flat-bottomed boats reminiscent of gondolas. The bourgeois house was built in 1537 by the milliner Louis Scherer (originally from Besançon) who earned his fortune in the Lièpvre Valley’s silver mines. This Renaissance- period house is based heavily on medieval architecture. The iconography blending allegories, characters from the old and new testaments with portraits of emperors is the perfect example of bourgeois tradesmen’s fondness for Renaissance humanist culture. The Lauch River in Colmar has earned it the nickname of “Little Venice” which probably comes from the row of houses that used to be on either side of the river in the south-east of the town. A rural community of winemakers, market gardeners and boatmen used to live here. Krutenau stretched around Rue Turenne which the marshal went down in 1674 for his triumphant return to town. The brick building with a metallic roof was established in 1865 and had many functions before returning to its market hall roots in September 2010. Twenty-odd traders sell fresh quality produce all year: fruit and vegetables, meat, cured meat, cheese, baked goods, fish and delicious local produce. This Rhine Renaissance-style bourgeois residence built in 1609 owes its name to its unusual 105 grotesque masks. A beautiful oriel covering two fl oors with a balcony adorns the wall that’s shot through with ran-domly placed trumeau-sculpted windows. An Alsatian bronze cooper by Auguste Bartholdi is the crowning glory of the stunning scribed gable. It serves as a reminder that the building was once used to trade wine.

This Gothic and Renaissance-style building was built in 1480 and was once the town’s business and political hub. Its ground fl oor was used as a warehouse, market and customs house for centuries.

They all date from the 17th and 18th century, are narrow, deep and tall with half-timbering on the upper fl oors. They stand on a stone base with no foundations or cellars. The houses’ roofs have several hooks that were used to dry hides prepared in the neighbouring stream.

The building was built for secular reasons in 1575 next to the former Saint-Jacques Chapel (fi rst mentioned in 1286) which was housed the Town Hall. A vaulted ossuary lies beneath the ground fl oor guardhouse and upper fl oor rooms. The loggia, built between 1577 and 1582, its prolifi c decorative repertoire and gate form an architectural gem of Renaissance architecture in the Upper Rhine.

A pretty row of half-timbered houses stand along the Lauch. Most of them were home to boatmen and fi shermen who would put their traps in the river. Go along Rue de la Poissonnerie to reach “Little Venice”, the most romantic part of Krutenau, the former market gardener neighbourhood. The market gardeners would sail along the Lauch to transport their goods to town on fl at-bottomed boats reminiscent of gondolas.

The bourgeois house was built in 1537 by the milliner Louis Scherer (originally from Besançon) who earned his fortune in the Lièpvre Valley’s silver mines. This Renaissance-period house is based heavily on medieval architecture.

Twenty-odd traders sell fresh quality produce all year: fruit and vegetables, meat, cured meat, cheese, baked goods, fi sh and delicious local produce.
