COLLTEX CARE PRODUCTSOptimum ski-skin care

Eco skinproofThanks to waterproofing with eco skinproof, the pile side of the skin absorbs less water, forms less snow build-up, glides better, and protects the ski skin against dirt.

> Regularly waterproof the ski skin with eco skinproof, latest on the evening before the ski tour, so the waterproofing can dry. Tip: activate the waterpro-ofing by heating it, e.g. with a hairdryer.

Natural skin+ski wax 27gThe natural skin+ski wax works for all types of snow and is 100% biodegra-dable. Due to its handy size and the screw cap, this wax is perfect for use on the go.

> When fitting the ski skin, press it down directly with the natural skin+ski wax. In case of snow build-up, dry the skin with a cloth and then apply the wax. The wax is equally suitable for the ski.

Express universal wax 40gThe express universal wax is the larger version of the natural skin+ski wax. This classic paraffin wax is suitable for all types of snow for both ski skins and skis.

> It is applied the same way as the natural skin+ski wax.

Protective netting Colltex ski skins with a hotmelt adhesive coating are protected by a special net when not in use. This also makes it easier to separate the adhesive layers, while the adhesive remains intact.

> When removing the ski skin, apply the protective net on one half of the ski skin, and then stick the second half of the skin onto it.

Skin sockInstead of the protective net, you can also use the pro-skin sock for protec-tion. This skin sock offers advantages in any wind and weather conditions.

> Pull the pro-skin over the skin that has been removed from the back and stick the second half of the skin to the outside of the skin sock.

Colltex tote bagPack the ski skin into the Colltex tote bag to keep the inside of the backpack dry.

> Dry the ski skin after the tour and store it in the tote bag that can easily be hung on the ski tip or the binding by its loops.

For applications, also see www.colltex.ch/video

COLLTEX RE-COATINGThe perfect adhesive coating on tour

Hotmelt tapeThe hotmelt tape is suitable for a complete renewal of the hotmelt adhesive coating.

> Remove the old adhesive coating with a blade and heat. Tip: remove the old adhesive with a soldering iron with spatula attachment. Then use an iron to transfer the new adhesive from the tape to the back of the ski skin.

Hotmelt tube 75mlThe adhesive from the hotmelt tube is a flexible way to re-coat part or all of the ski skin.

> Clean the adhesive side of the ski skin and evenly spread the adhesive with a spatula or roller. Tip: remove the old adhesive with a soldering iron with spatula attachment.

QuicksprayThe quickspray is the very best option for a spontaneous re-coating on the evening before a tour. As the quickspray should dry for 15 minutes, its appli-cation on the mountain when exposed to wind and weather, is not ideal. For such a purpose, we recommend quicktex.

> spray quickspray evenly on the ski skin and let dry.

QuicktexThe quicktex solves adhesion problems on the mountain. It is small, light, ef-ficient, and suitable for ski skins of all brands. Once the tour is over, quicktex can be removed and the adhesive coating renewed properly.

> Use quicktex like a double-sided adhesive tape.

Acrylate tapeThe acrylate tape is used to completely renew the acrylate adhesive coating. Since the new coating is highly adhesive, a protective net will have to be used after such a re-coating.

Our Re-coating ServiceYou can have your skins re-coated by our Colltex professionals.

> Simply send us your ski skin directly or via your sports shop to Glarus or use the «Ski-Skin Re-coating Service». The price includes everything from postal charges to send it to the return shipment, the re-coating itself, and the waterproofing (only in CH/FL).

TIP 01 | AttachmentBefore attaching the ski skin, dry the ski base, glue the ski skin to the ski without stretching it and press it down with a block of wax.

TIP 02 | Walking TechniquePull the ski within the track and try not to lift it. This way the ski skin glides in an optimum manner, hardly forms any snow build-up, and you will save energy as well.

TIP 03 | SlidingAvoid sliding back on steep terrain by shifting your weight backwards to the heel. This will put your weight on the entire length of the ski skin, and its grip on the snow will improve.

TIP 04 | Stride LengthTake shorter steps on steep or diffi cult stretches. In this manner, your centre of gravity will be better centred above the ski and stable.

TIP 05 | Snow Build-UpA change from moist to dry, cold snow can cause snow build-up. Remove the bu-ild-up and dry the ski skin with a cloth. Wax the skin in the direction of the pile.

TIP 06 | Short DescentsWhen skiing downhill with ski skins attached, close the binding at the back to avo-id falling forwards. However, long downhill runs on frozen snow put great strain on the fi bre pile.

TIP 07 | DetachmentIn windy conditions, put the ski on the ground, fold back the rear half of the ski skin, attach the protective net and stick the second half of the skin onto it. Or use the Colltex pro-skin sock.

TIP 08 | Repeated Attachments and DetachmentsDuring a downhill course, stick your skins in the front of your jacket. Your body heat will make the skin cool down less and the grip will remain better.

TIP 09 | Skin Adhesion FailsPlace adhesive layer on adhesive layer and thus reactivate the hotmelt adhesive. Or use the practical Colltex quicktex. This will help with all ski skins.

TIP 10 | Care and MaintenanceAfter the tour equals before the tour. Dry your ski skin, check its adhesive strength, and waterproof the skin side. Reap the rewards of this procedure on your next tour…

COLLTEX DRYBASENew ways to coat your ski skins

SNOW BUILD-UPAn explanation

Depending on snow and weather conditions, annoying snow build-ups may form. As a rule, not everyone in a tour group will be equally affected. Often, the ski skin is blamed – though that is rarely the reason. An explanation:

Why does snow build-up occur?Snow build-up occurs for a variety of reasons. The most common cause is that we change from moist to dry and cold snow. This causes the snow to freeze to the damp parts of the ski skin. However, it is also possible that a touring skier laying down a trail is not affected by any snow build-up, though the touring skier following behind is. In this case, it may well be that a slight fi lm of water formed due to warmer conditions, which is then absorbed by the climbing ski of the second skier. There are many more combinations of temperature and snow conditions we might list though. Not least the care spent on the ski skins, the cross-country skiing technique and the choice of route – all of which play an important role. > As you can see, explaining the whys and wherefores of snow build-up is far from easy.

How can I prevent snow build-up?Regular waterproofi ng of your ski skin is always indicated. To do this, stick the ski skin to the entire surface of the ski and, thus, prevent part of the wa-terproofi ng agent ending up on the adhesive side. We also recommend that you press the ski skins down immediately with a hard wax – and always in the natural direction of the pile. When striding, you can prevent snow build-up by pulling your skis within the trail and refrain from lifting them if possible. When establishing a new trail, choose the terrain so as to have as little temperature difference as possible.

What can I do in case of snow build-up when on tour? Remove the snow and rub the edges and the ski skin as dry as possible. An old kitchen towel is perfect for that purpose. Then apply a layer of wax in the direction of the pile.

The back of the ski skins is a fabric made of cotton and synthetics. The back of all Colltex skins is now additionally treated with a special coating. Only then, the proven hotmelt resin adhesive is applied. This additional coat called Colltex Drybase has the following advantages:

Hardly any water absorption: the hollow spaces in the fabric are fi lled by Colltex Drybase. Thanks to this sealing, hardly any water can penetrate into the fabric back. The ski skin will remain dry and light even in warm snow conditions.

Chemical bond: the Colltex Drybase coating creates an optimum chemical bond to the hotmelt resin adhesive. The hotmelt thus adheres in an optimum manner to the back of the ski skin. This renders tearing off the adhesive very unlikely.

More durable: the Colltex Drybase coating makes the back of the ski skin more resistant to torsion, stronger and more durable – without losing its suppleness. The few grams extra of coating are compensated several time over as the ski skin hardly absorbs any water.

Three questions to Vitus Schwei-zer, Cert. Textile Engineer and Head of R&D at Colltex.

What do you consider to be the greatest challenge of this project?Colltex Drybase is the next step in developing our future ski skins. With this «positive change of the product», we had to pay great attention to avoid any negative im-pact on the already optimized and good properties of the ski skins.

Did the changeover to Colltex Drybase work out for volume production? The step from the sample phase to our large production machines is an exciting stage of development and often comes with surprises. With Colltex Drybase, we were able to successfully transfer the positive and encouraging results of the sampling phase to our large-scale production.

The advantages of Colltex Dryba-se include greatly reduced water absorption, an optimum chemi-cal bonding to the adhesive and increased strength. What do you consider to be the most obvious advantage? The low water absorption is cer-tainly what most ski tourers hoped for. For me, it is equally exciting that the Colltex Drybase technology allows us to adjust the torsional strength and fl exibility of the entire ski skin. Also highly interesting is the slight cushioning effect of the coating. The skin compensates even the smallest irregularities which, in turn, has a positive effect on gliding and climbing properties.

THEMED SKI SKINS – WILD ANIMAL PATTERNSIn co-operation with «association to promote respecting animal territories»

FLUORINE FOR SKI SKINSDid you know?

PFC indicates perfl uorinated and polyfl uorinated chemicals and summarises about 8,000 known substances. All PFCs have in common that they consists of carbon chains of different lengths in which hydrogen atoms have been replaced by fl uorine. These substances do not occur in nature.

To this very day, the majority of waterproofi ng agents use fl uorocarbons, which are harmful to our health and the environment. Waterproofi ng releases these substances into the environment, where they accumulate as they are not biodegradable by nature or the human organism. Environmental protec-tion agencies have been drawing attention to this danger for years and were able to persuade some textile suppliers to ban fl uorocarbon from their pro-duction processes as part of the Detox Campaign.

Apart from Colltex, most climbing-skin manufacturers continue to treat ski skins with PFCs though. For the reasons listed below, Colltex considers this quite unnecessary:

For the 2022/23 winter seasons, Colltex plans to launch the Lu-cendro ski skin. This is an unprecedented ski-skin construction in the world of ski skins. To provide all those interested with a chance to sample this novelty, Colltex is launching a limited edi-tion Lucendro of 100 pairs of these themed ski skins in co-ope-ration with the «Respektiere deine Grenzen» or Respect Animal Territories campaign.

This themed ski skin, the future Colltex Lucendro, is a synthetic ski skin of the latest generation. Its novel fi bre was developed by an interdisciplinary team over the course of quite some years. Tests with this new fabric consistently showed good results as to climbing and gliding characteristics. This new material refu-ted the widespread opinion that synthetic ski skins have poor gliding properties. Besides, the raw material is produced by a Swiss spinning mill.

We consider this ski skin to be a good addition or, depending on future developments, an alternative to today’s mohair skin made of Angora goat hair. This is a ski skin for ski tourers who love a skin with a good grip and still want suitable gliding properties.

As it is a world novelty, this ski skin allows us to individually print small batches. The respective colour designs are digitally printed and transferred to the ski skin. With our themed «Wild Animals» ski skins, we want to present this technical possibility with the respective visuals.

Already after the fi rst ski tour, the waterproofi ng mixes with the snow and no longer sticks to the ski skin due to mechanical wear and tear.

It makes more sense to treat ski skins with an environmentally harmless wax or waterproofi ng spray.

Even with a PFC-treated ski skin, the pile will have to be regularly cared for with a waterproofi ng spray.

>

>

>

This is why Colltex decided to completely refrain from using waterproofi ng based on harmful fl uorocarbons, starting with the 2019/2020 season.

The base material (mohair/granules) is spun into yarn.

The yarn is thereupon woven into a double weave on the loom and separated into a base and top weave.

The pile fabric is thoroughly rinsed, dyed, or printed on.

Colltex is the only manufacturer to use the additional Colltex Edge coating. This coating adjusts the torsional strength of the pile and prevents the ski skin from fraying.

The backing fabric (back of the ski skin) made of cotton and polyester is woven and made impervious to shrinkage.

The pile fabric (pile side) is pressed together with the backing fabric using both pressure and heat and by means of an inserted fi lm.

After the Colltex Drybase the backing oft he ski skin is coated with our proven hotmelt resin adhesive.

On the cutting table, the ski skins are now cut to size on the CAD-controlledcutting table to precisely fi t the ski model.

Now the matching front and tail hook are sewn to the ski skin.

After a fi nal check, the ski skin is packed and shipped together with a Colltex tote bag, the protective net, and instructions.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MOHAIR, SYNTHETICS, AND A MIXED FABRIC Description of the most important materials

The demands made on ski skins are quite varied. They have to work in an op-timum manner in different snow, temperature, and weather conditions. Thus, a manufacturer tries to achieve the best possible results with the properties offered by the different materials – the weave, the quality of the fi bre, the length of the pile, and other factors. For a description of the most important materials, see below:

100% MohairMohair wool comes from the long, curly hair of the Angora goat, also called a mohair goat. Mohair is one of highest quality fi bres nature has to offer and also popular for jumpers and upholstery fabrics. «Mohair» is derived from the Arabic word «muhayyar», which translates into «cloth made of goat hair». About four kilograms of yarn are obtained per animal and year by shearing. Thus, no goat has to die to obtain its precious hair.

The hair of the mohair goat is water-repellent and, at the same time, moistu-re-absorbing, which reduces the formation of snow build-up and allows for a light ski skin. The hair remains supple, even in very cold weather, and glides extremely well thanks to its natural structure. On the other hand, mohair we-ars down faster, in particular in hard spring snow, and has less grip than a purely synthetic fabric.

At Colltex, the PALÜ and PDG RACE ski skins are made of 100% mohair.

100% SyntheticsMost synthetic ski skins are made of polyamide fi bres. In recent years, they have been further developed though. Synthetic ski skins are durable, abra-sion-resistant, robust, and can even withstand contact with rocks. Besides, they offer excellent grip – in fact, their climbing properties are legendary on hard, icy surfaces. Their less than perfect gliding performance due to the rather dull hair has been improved over the years.

Colltex is developing the latest generation of synthetic ski skins with truly amazing results in terms of gliding performance. With its themed Wild An-imals ski skins, Colltex introduces a limited edition of the latest generation of synthetic ski skins.

Mixed Weave (65% Mohair / 35% Polyamide)The mixed weave skins offer a proven combination of the advantages of both mohair and synthetics. This combines good climbing properties with gliding properties that increasingly match those of pure mohair. As a rule, the ratio of mohair to synthetics is approx. 65% to 35%. The share of synthetics moreover increases abrasion resistance and, thus, durability. This ski skin is a good choice for recreational skiers who demand quality.

At Colltex, the TÖDI and CLARIDEN ski skins are made of this mixed weave.
