Thinking of spending New Years Eve away, then how about Dublin a city just across the water in the emerald isle where Molly Malone used to strut her stuff, DUBLIN and here's my pub guide to

a fun packed weekend which is just a short hop across the Irish sea.

Most choose flying as the best and quickest way to get to Dublin and booked early, you can get to Dublin airport return for under £50 with Ryanair or Aer Lingus .com who are also very competitive. Holyhead has 2 sailings a day if you are not a good flyer. On arrival, from experience, get a direct bus outside the terminal which will take you

into the centre of Dublin for a few euros. Taxi drivers have a habit of taking the "scenic" route and can be very expensive.

Once settled in to your hotel, you cannot go to Dublin without having the Famous Irish Breakfast in Bewleys hotel just of Grafton Street complete with the traditional "White Pudding" which tastes rather like Haggis just on a smaller scale. When In Rome.......

Most people ask me ...Where's the best place to have a good Pint of Guinness or whatever you fancy so here’s my guide to (in my opinion) some of my favourite Pubs in Dublin City centre all within walking distance from each other.

If you must go to Temple Bar (Tourist Heaven) I can recommend...

1, The Auld Dubliner.

Slap bang in the middle of Temple Bar, Dublin's Cultural Quarter, you'll find The Auld Dubliner. During the day, step into the Auld Dubliner for a relaxing oasis from the hustle and bustle outside. As the evening progresses, get caught up in the atmosphere of fun that permeates throughout. The Auld Dubliner, a pub that characterises all that is great in traditional Irish pubs, from the decor and service to the food and of course, the craic.

2. Oliver ST John Gogarty. Named after Dublin's most famous poet, pilot, politician and avid fan of Guinness, the Oliver St John Gogarty Pub is well known among the trend setting haunts of Dublin's Temple Bar. Gogarty’s live music bar, upstairs on the first floor hosts traditional Irish music sessions from 2.30 pm till late every day of the week. Enjoy the Olde Worlde charm, traditional Irish music and wholesome meals served all day!

A PUB GUIDE TO A DUBLIN NEW YEARS EVE

FROM A"PROPER DUBLINER"

There are however some very good pubs dotted around the city centre and these are.....

3. The Hairy Lemon. Great food, service and a friendly atmosphere, but watch out for huge crowds at the weekends. One of my favourite pubs in Dublin (Spent a lot of my twenties (and 30,s here) and famous for the film "The Commitments" as they filmed several scenes from the film here.

4. Odessa Roof Bar & Terrace. Only got to know about this pub in the last couple of years but a really lively and trendy pub situated on the top floor with fantastic views of Dublin especially at night. Open until late. Thoroughly recommended.

5. The Brazen Head. This is the oldest pub in Dublin just a couple of minutes walk from Temple Bar. This dates back as far as 1198. Does a fantastic pint of "Liffey Water" which is another name for Guinness.

6. Cafe En Seine. Cafe en Seine is a continental and stylish café bar on Dublin’s leafy Dawson Street. Open from noon until late. Beautiful surroundings and nominated for Dublin Bar of the year 2014. Good

Craic....

If you want to see a famous person or 2 you will probably find them (with their entourage) in…

7. Lillies Bordello.

Situated on Grafton St in the South City Centre, Lillie's Bordello is the arguably the most elite club in Ireland. Frequented by many of Ireland’s (and Europe’s) rich and famous. Dress well is the only advice I can give you here.

8. O Donahues. This is a famous meeting place on rugby weekends especially. Loved by rugby lovers from England, Scotland, Wales, France & Italy. Well worth a visit on six nations weekends. The atmosphere here has to be seen to be believed. But not only for Rugby lovers but sports people in general. Christy Moore and The Dubliners have been known to spend many a memorable night entertaining guests

here.

9. Messrs Maguire. Open since 1808 and home to some of Dublin's finest craft beers and Whiskeys. If the doors off the latch, just let yourself in and I'm sure you'll be welcomed with open arms (as long as you have a pint).

10. The Porter House. Opened in 1996 this is Irelands first brew pub. Now have several around Dublin and the world (London & New York). Famous for its home made stout (Not Guinness) and won a gold medal at the worlds most prestigious International brewing industry award. Great beer and great atmosphere. And Finally.. There's an old saying in Dublin... there's no strangers in Dublin. Just people you haven't met yet... so remember your never alone in a pub in Dublin. Footnote...Why not try Abracadabra at the end of the night. I recommend the Chilli kebab (Just make sure you don't have a White shirt on). Until the next time............

DUSK TIL DAWN!

Drivers using the roads in the early hours of the morning are most likely to be involved

in a high-speed collision, according to research by In-Car Cleverness (ICC)

The vehicle relationship management specialist analysed data from 897 rental cars to show that the speed of vehicles involved in a collision peaks at 2am, when the impact speed of accidents hits an average of 36mph.

The speeds at which accidents occur increase steadily from the early evening, starting at 24mph at 8pm and rising by 53% over the next six hours. However, the highest collision speed recorded was 100mph, from a crash that happened in the evening rush hour.

This issue we head north to take a look at Independent Bodyshop -

CHRISTMAS TREATS

It is not to late to make some lovely Christmas Treats that will go down

well with friends and family alike.

CHRISYMAS PUDDING TRUFFLES

These lovely after dinner delights are really so simple to make.

INGREDIENTS

200g dark chocolate, broken into pieces

175ml double cream

5 tbsp brandy, rum or other spirit of your choice (optional)

100g Christmas pudding (crumbled)

Cup cake holly decoration (available in most supermarkets at the moment or order online)

100g bar of white chocolate (melted)

METHOD

Cover a baking tray tightly with two layers of cling film to put the truffles on to set. Tip the chocolate pieces into a bowl along with the crumbled Christmas pudding Pour the cream into a pan and bring to a rolling boil. Pour over the chocolate and Christmas pudding mi and stir until all the chocolate is melted. If you want to add booze, mix it in at this point. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature - this will take about 1½ hours - by which time it should be set. Using a melon baller or teaspoon, scoop out bite-sized pieces. Dust your hands with icing sugar to stop them sticking and roll the pieces into balls. Roll in sifted cocoa and place them on the prepared tray. Decorate the top of the truffle with a little drizzle of white chocolate melted and a holly decoration Once they are set you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for about a week.

Christmas Rocky Road Cake - get

the kids to help you with this one!

INGREDIENTS

250g dark chocolate, chopped

150g milk chocolate, chopped

175g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing

4 tbsp golden syrup

200gamaretti biscuits

150g shelled Brazil nuts

150g red glacé cherries 125g mini marshmallows 1 tbsp icing sugar Brown Fondant Icing White Fondant Icing Green Fondant Icing Red Fondant Icing Cake board edible glitter, to decorate (optional)

METHOD

Line two round bowls (6 inch wide is perfect) with cling film or if you have a round Christmas pudding mould

use that

Place the dark and milk chocolate pieces into a heavy-based pan. Add the butter and golden syrup and cook over a low heat to melt and combine.

Place the amaretti biscuits into a freezer bag and bash with a rolling pin to make crumbs of various sizes. Place the Brazil nuts into another freezer bag and bash in the same way. Take the pan of melted chocolate mixture off the heat and add the crushed biscuits and nuts. Add the glacé cherries and mini marshmallows. Fold the mixture carefully to coat all of the solid ingredi-

ents with the syrupy chocolate mixture. Pour the mixture into the bowls or mould and flatten the top by placing a disc of greaseproof paper and

something heavy on top. Leave in the fridge until set. Turn out both bowls and with a sharp knife slice on of the bottoms of the cake to make a flat surface. Join the two pieces together with a little melted chocolate to form a ball - leave to set. Roll out the brown fondant to a round shape big enough to cover the ball and place over the ball, trim-

ming at the bottom. Roll out the white and cut to a shape resembling a snow cap (see pictures). Add three holly leaves cut from the green fondant and three small balls from the

red and place on the top of the cake. (edible glue is handy for this) Place on a board covered with white fondant icing and add decorations as desired

(optional)

Who makes the decisions around here?

The latest DVLA statistics (published in April 2014) show that there are a total of 35 million vehicles licensed for use on the road in Great Britain which is a 1.5% increase since 2012 and the biggest annual increase since 2007. The same set of statistics show that the number of vehicles licensed by females accounted for 40% of the private vehicles registered. This means that there has been an increase of 72% since 1994.

It’s pretty evident, therefore, that the female market is of increasing importance to the motor industry. The motor manufacturers caught on to this several years ago and have adjusted their marketing strategies accordingly, a recent example being Land Rover’s emphasis on design input by Victoria Beckham for their Evoque model. The manufacturers have also gone to great lengths to ensure their dealerships are female and family friendly. The insurance industry too has acknowledged this trend and we see the marketing of “female friendly” motor insurance.

So what has this to do with accident repair, you may say? A damaged car is just that, and it’s irrelevant who was driving it.

Many women are distrustful of service garages and dealers, having seen reports in the press and on television describing how women car owners have been overcharged and given sub-standard service. The distrust is often reinforced by negative first-hand experiences.

I have lost count of the number of times when I have seen a female car owner, accompanied by a male companion, being totally ignored by salesmen and service advisors discussing their car. It’s not really surprising that many women have a low opinion of the motor trade.

Now before the guys out there start shouting ‘We are not like that’, I know that many of you out there are respectful and helpful with your female clients, however there are still some that are not and for those - well times they are a changing so for those that need to change, let’s take a look at how you can change.

From the bodyshop marketing point of view there are no instant solutions, however there are areas that should be looked at:

Is your reception area “female friendly”?

Are your staff – especially front line staff – trained to deal appropriately with the needs of ALL customers, irrespective of gender, race, religion or age?

Can your advertising be fine tuned to improve its appeal to women drivers?

Are there any female orientated businesses or organisations in your area that you can apply some marketing resources to?

The same applies to the new and used car dealer as well as the aftermarket

departments. Believe it or not a female friendly dealership will often do better in sales

than one that has a ‘macho man’ or ’you are just a female’ attitude - why? Well if you

can’t answer that then you need to make some changes and fast.

RETIRING OR THINKING OF BUYING A PROPERTY ABROAD

THEN READ ON…..

When Karen and her husband James decided it was

time to move house, they knew that the type of

property they wanted would not stretch to their

budget here in the UK so decided to look further

afield in France. Whilst both Karen and James both

spoke French it had been many years since the

couple had visited the Country, other than the odd

short trip to Paris and Nice.

As everyone know, house hunting can be fraught at the best of times over here and it a

foreign land even worse. Having spent many a weekend either flying or driving over to

view properties they had seen on the web and with retirement and the sale of their UK

property just a few weeks away they knew that they needed to do something fast, yet

they were still undecided on where in France they actually wanted to live.

Karen was sat in the hairdressers when she overheard a conversation between two of the

staff and one had just come back from a tour of Italy by way of using a Motorhome. This

gave her an idea and so after a bit of research on the internet told James about it and he

too thought it was a great idea.

SO WHAT WAS IT?

Hire a Motorhome for a few months and just travel around France until they found the

right house and made sure that they liked the community.

I met up with them a year ago when they were ‘camped’ in the field of a friend’s house in

the Var and had already been in France exploring various regions for just under 3 months.

They had by then looked at many houses and stayed in over 12 villages and looking for a

campsite late one night, had taken a wrong turn in the

dark and ended up at my friend Sandie ad Geoff’s house,

seeking directions and as it was late my friends offered

them the use of their field. They actually stayed for 2

months and with the help of my friends have now bought

a place in a village about 10 miles away.

.

Returning to France last April, Sandie took me over to their house for a visit and I asked

Karen what the advantages of hiring a motorhome to explore and view properties were.

Karen said that from her point of view was that having put all the contents of their UK

home in storage having sold their house, this was a much more cost effective way to hunt

for property as had they rented either in the UK or France it would have cost them around

€900 per month plus shipping cost for their possessions,

not once but twice and on top of that would have been

the problems of having to move anyway as many rentals

were only for the 6 months during winter, and they did

not want to commit to a full year in one place as it

limited how much exploring that they could do plus the

costs of staying in a B & B or hotel every time they went

off to explore. Overall the cost of hiring the motorhome

had been a far less expensive option and gave them the freedom that they needed and

they were only tied to 3 months rental, Karen said they could have done it on a month by

month basis if they had wanted but felt that they needed at least the 3 months and with

an option to extend. The motorhome became our home/office and transport which was

ideal for house hunting and because we hired a 6 berth there was plenty of room if a

friend or family wanted to join us for a few days.

Another advantage to renting a motorhome was the fact that they also got stay in some

lovely places as James pointed out plus they often got to hear about properties from the

locals which were unknown to them and often the agents who advertise on the net as

placed with the local non-computerised agent. I would advocate getting a Sat Nav and a

very detailed map of whichever country you are looking in and getting bikes or even a

scooter as we did as we found some of the lanes a little tough going in the motor home as

quite narrow and it was great for just popping into the local village of an evening.

Not that either the Sat Nav or map helped them when they turfed up at Sandie’s, however

Karen said getting lost that night was the best thing that happened to them as had they

not met Sandie and Geoff they would never have met Almandine, a local vet who’s

neighbour was about to sell her property and which

was just what they were looking for and found that

the villagers were as friendly to them and are

delighted. They were off the following week to join

up with friends who were also retired and decided to

tour around Italy, renting a motorhome and moving

from place to place as and when they felt like it.

It seems to me that not only is it a great way to house

hunt, but also if you are retired or able to spend

several months away and let’s face it seems idyllic and

a lot less hassle than unpacking and packing when touring and using hotels.

There is a great Video Diary on You Tube from a couple of Canadian ex-pats travel writers

who now live in Belgium and they are about to embark on a year long tour of Europe.
