NSO: COFFEE CONCERTS, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, WASHINGTON, D.C.: Will depart from Security at 9:45AM and return to Collington around 2PM. FOREIGN AFFAIRS DISCUSSION GROUP, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 11AM – GAME ROOM: This month's reading is an article from Foreign Affairs (available in the Library). Author Annette Gordon-Reed notes that the founding documents of the U.S. have influenced people in many parts of the world in their search for freedom. Yet, she notes, they are tainted by "America's Original Sin" of slavery, which persists today in continued segregation and assertion of white supremacy. Our session will focus on how this persistence may shape our exercise of American influence as we call for the observance of human rights and the rule of law in our foreign policy. Black History Month provides a good springboard for this discussion. DISTRICT 4000 MEETING, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 4PM – GAME ROOM: Lois Brown talks about how the RA website can help you. BSO at STRATHMORE, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23: Will depart from Security at 6:30PM and return to Collington around 9:30/10PM. MET OPERA: “La Boheme,” SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 24, BOWIE, MD: Departs from Security at 11:45AM (Showtime 12:30PM) and returns to Collington at 4:30PM. The world’s most popular opera returns in Franco Zeffirelli’s classic production, with a series of exciting casts. Angel Blue, Anita Hartig, and Sonya Yoncheva share the role of the fragile Mimì, with Dmytro Popov, Russell Thomas, and Michael Fabiano alternating as the poet Rodolfo. Alexander Soddy and Marco Armiliato share conducting duties.

during the desegregating of the US Army. He was commissioned in 1947 as a Second Lieutenant in a fully segregated US Army and his first assignment was with a Black Division servicing the famous Berlin Air Lift in Post WWII Germany. Some years later he retired from a fully integrated service. His reminisces will be followed by his report on an organization begun then and continues today in helping veterans find civilian employment. A MESSAGE FROM THE LIBRARY: A book review by Marion Fuchs: "A Gentleman in Moscow" by Amor Towles is an enjoyable novel with a strong plot, a wonderful protagonist, and well-drawn side figures. But it is the Russian history that is the backdrop that gives it even greater depth and interest. Both Jacob and I enjoyed it. Located in Fiction hardcover. Also, recently the Library announced some titles we had purchased. Already someone has "taken" the book by Joe Biden, "Promise me, Dad." If the someone was you, at least sign it out so we know who has it. Other residents want to read it. Do you know the Resident Association web site has access to LibraryThing, our online catalog? Look in the left column on the RA site for it. ARENA STAGE NEW SUMMER SHOW: Are you interested in the new show “Dave” at Arena Stage that is not a part of the subscription?! Sign up on the Interest Sheet in the Trip Book! From a Tony and Pulitzer Prize award-winning creative team comes the world premiere musical comedy “Dave,” adapted from the Oscar-nominated film. Dave tells the story of high school teacher (and presidential lookalike) Dave Kovic, who is hired by the Secret Service as a stand-in for the Commander-in-Chief. When the President falls ill under less than “presidential” circumstances, Dave is thrust into the Oval Office to avoid a national scandal, and must find a way to gain the trust and love of the American people … and the First Lady. NOTICE: Please remove all plants and containers from the green- house no later than March 15. We need to clean the greenhouse and

REMINDER: Please return your art survey in the collection box in the Clock Tower by Saturday afternoon. If you need another form, there are blank ones by the collection box, and Vern will print more if needed. If you forgot something, feel free to turn in another form. Just please don't double up your previous entries. VET AT COLLINGTON: Right now the veterinarian, Dr. Susan Maturo, will be following the schedule of THE FIRST MONDAY, EVERY OTHER MONTH, BEGINNING MARCH 5TH, STARTING AROUND 9AM. You can call any time for an appointment, even for the Monday in May. Calling at the last minute would be a complication because Dr. Maturo wants to get files and necessary equipment together on the Fridays before her first Monday morning visits. When you call for an appointment, please explain why you need a visit, again better helping Dr. Maturo in planning her visit. THE WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH PLANNING COMMITTEE solicits help from residents and staff for a display of "The Hats We Wear" for the Clock Tower glass cases in March. We hope to have all sorts of hats, from hard hats to Easter bonnets. Photos of women in their hats are also welcome. Put on your thinking caps and check your closets and photo albums. We need the materials by the end of February. Dual Themes for African-American History Month are: 1. Good Health -- essential to a Productive and Active Life 2. Afro-American Soldiers in a Segregated Military NOMINATING COMMITTEE: The Nominating Committee is pleased to announce that it has identified Peter Fielding, Marian Fuchs, and Tom McCain as candidates for the Collington Board of Directors to replace Kay Laughton as a resident member. All Trips Depart from Security. If you need to cancel for any reason you must do so at least 48 hours in advance or you will be charged a $15

cancellation fee. ELLSWORTH PLACE & CINEMAS, MONDAY, MARCH 5, SILVER SPRING, M.D.: Will depart from Security at 11AM. Be back on the bus by 2:30PM to return to Collington. Ellsworth Place is a 350,000-square-foot, six-story, enclosed shopping mall in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland and is anchored by stores like TJ Maxx, Ross, and Burlington Coat Factory. Adjacent to Ellsworth Place is a thriving downtown, complete with a bustling pedestrian mall, the world headquarters of Discovery Communications, the American Film Institute Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, Whole Foods, Stadium Seating Majestic Movie Theater. MET OPERA “SEMIRAMIDE” SATURDAY, MARCH 10, BOWIE, M.D.: Will depart from Security at 12PM and return to Collington around 5:15PM. Semiramide is the culmination of the Italian phase of Rossini’s monumental yet unusual career. He had already produced such immortal comedies as Il Barbiere di Siviglia and L’Italiana in Algeri, but in the early 19th century he was celebrated above all else for his tragedies—none more so than Semiramide. For decades after its premiere, the opera swept through the music capitals of Europe and beyond, enthralling audiences with its urgent, transcendentally beautiful use of melody; undeniably exhilarating drama; and, most importantly, astonishing vocal displays. LUNCH AT NAMASTE, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, CROFTON, M.D.: Will depart from Security at 11:30AM and return to Collington around 2:15PM. Fine Indian Cuisine, located in Crofton! The word “Namaste” is a warm and respectful form of greeting used to welcome a relative or guest. This fine Indian restaurant, which has a wide selection of delicious chicken, lamb, seafood and vegetarian dishes—classic delicacies of India-- along with imaginative new dishes created by our talented chef. Reservations will be made on Monday, March 19, under the name COLLINGTON. MET OPERA, “COSI FAN TUTTE”: SATURDAY, MARCH 31, BOWIE, M.D.: Will depart from Security at 12PM and return to Collington around 5:15PM. The third and final collaboration between Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte is a fascinating paradox: a frothy comedy of manners with an intensely dark take on human nature; an old story (it has antecedents in Boccaccio, Shakespeare, and Cervantes, among others) with a startlingly modern tone and a beautiful score.

“Così fan tutte” was only moderately successful at its premiere and remained just outside the standard repertoire for more than a century. Così still poses unique challenges, and correspondingly unique rewards, for the public today. The deadline to sign up for this trip will be Thursday, March 8 by 12PM and tickets ($8) will be purchased on this day. This will be a self-guided tour and tickets will be under the name COLLINGTON.

February Commendations

To Bety Jean: Thank you again for your excellent cleaning at our apartment yesterday! My husband had to go out and left it a mess. You went above what you normally do and it was wonderful to return last

night to a clean space!

Mary Kim 1/31/2018

To Adrian Ford: My father passed away here 12 hours ago. I usually visited him when it coincided with Adrian’s shift. I’m so happy it worked out that way. She was attentive, empathetic, and a wonderful combination of professionalism/compassion. I know how much of a pistol he could be when he was

younger and his traits were amplified when dementia kicked in. Adrian had patience and kindness through it all. Please give her the recognition that she’s due. I only wish that there were 20 more

Adrians!

Leila Lucas 1/17/18

To Dining Staff and James Madison: I want to complement the whole dining staff for their stellar performance last week and this last Monday - they rose to the emergency challenge and saw that

almost every resident was fed and supported, despite the horrendous deep freeze, water breaks and everything else! Thank you all so much! And I want to thank James in particular - he was our server on Sunday when my family was visiting; my youngest granddaughter was excitedly looking forward to her

birthday, and James rustled up a beautifully decorated platter with ice cream topped by a candle, which he and several other servers brought to the table singing Happy Birthday! It really made Amalia’s day!

Alice Nicolson 1/11/2018

To John Fofano: John was very helpful last night in helping me get a resident back to his first floor apartment by getting a wheel chair and pushing him back to his scooter which was on the first floor as

the elevator was not working. I was very thankful, please let him know.

To Lula Jones, Marcus Culley: In the bitter cold snap last week my toilet and shower drains froze up -- and it turned out they were connected. Ms. Lula got Marcus the plumber to me as quickly as she could, and when my problem turned out to be complex, requiring removing the toilet and snaking, he brought

in contractors to work on it because he had to be over in the main building coping with the disasters there. I had everything back in about 24 hours, and they cleaned up after themselves too. All this while so much was going on with water in the main building. Thanks to everyone -- Ms. Lula, Marcus

To Lula Jones, Walter Ramirez, Walter Lewis: As soon as the crises in the main building were under control, Ms. Lula sent the two Walters over to my cottage to take care of a list of things. These included moving a sofa and shifting small furniture to where the sofa used to be, and then putting an area rug in

the appropriate place. After that it was some other moving stuff around that was small to them, but nearly impossible to me. They've both been in my place before and they obviously remember and can help me figure out details -- something that's not trivial! I think all of this took about 10 minutes, and

they left with an admonition to contact Ms. Lula to send them when I figured out some more details of the furniture moving. There are a number of reasons why I'm glad I moved to Collington, but having

people like Ms. Lula and the Walters available is one of the very big reasons.

To Christian Ramsey and Culinary Staff: Please accept my thanks on behalf of the Drama Committee for the tremendous help you gave us in setting up the tables and bar for last Wednesday’s “Musicale”.

Everything was done to a very high standard, and your staff were efficient and friendly as always. Thank you.

To Arnold Edwards: On January 25th Arnold was called in late in the evening to work on an issue in a resident home pertaining to no heat. Not only did Arnold respond timely, but he was able to bring the matter to a satisfactory conclusion where the resident and his wife are both delighted and extremely satisfied. Thank you Arnold for going above and beyond in meeting the resident expectation and the

ability to turn a stressful situation into a positive outcome.

To Natosha Bomgardner: I am happy to report that, with the help of Natosha Bomgardner, the missing coat is back. It was taken by mistake by another resident who didn't realize it wasn't hers. Keys and

gloves are also back. So we are very thankful to Natosha and we will be more careful next time. At least keys won't be in the pocket in case there is another coat mix up sometime. Thanks to you for your

concern about this.

To Lula Jones and Marcus Culley: Our washing machine went badly out of balance. It moved about two feet. I was afraid to use it. I sent a work order, and then Lula Jones facilitated Marcus Culley coming the next day. He immediately fixed the problem and will adjust the machine later if this happens again. He

Page 17: Collington’s Weekly Courier · Courier 6 February 19– February 25, 2018 ROUNDHOUSE THEATER, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18, BETHESDA, MD: Departs from Security at 12:45PM and returns to

ran water through the machine, found no leaking, or other problem and was very reassuring. I had probably overloaded the machine. Then Marcus Culley checked our outside lights and replaced the one

which was burned out. We would like to commend both Lula Jones and Marcus Culley for their quick responses to our problems, along with the professional manner with which they solved our problems.

We are most grateful.

To Sheik Fahnbulleh: Sheik really saved the day for me when suddenly I had trouble seeing

out of both eyes. He came over, helped me sit down, and got me some napkins soaked in warm water, which was exactly what I needed. When my eyes were rested, I was able to walk back to my cottage. I

couldn't have managed without him. Of course I knew you would want to know about this valuable action he took.

To Vern Rious, Irv Duff, Erainer Smith, Marlene Lopez, Steven Tice, Chris Jones, Gene Davis, and Arnold Edwards: On Saturday afternoon we experienced yet another flood in the Country Store. As frustrating as it was, the following employees jumped right in to do their very best in spite of water pouring from the ceiling. Vern Rious who initiated the call tree to alert management of the emergency. Irv Duff was first on site who immediately got the water vacuum and started vacuuming the water. Erainer Smith

and Marlene Lopez who jumped right in to the water pouring from the ceiling and waded through about 2 inches of water on the floor to help secure as much inventory as possible as well as provide sheets of plastic to cover the shelving. Both of them were wet at the end. Steve Tice from Security who tried to climb in to the attic to find the shut off valve. Chris Jones who found the shut off valve and turned off the water . Gene Davis who came in from home to assess the situation and begin the long process of cleanup. Arnold Edwards was the maintenance person on call and was there as quickly as possible.

Collington should be proud of these wonderful employees who saw a problem and responded.

To Dwindle Robinson, Walter Ramirez, Walter Lewis, Cecil Reyes, Irv Duff and Emmanuel Omari: The OO Shop is in great debt to Dwindle Robinson, Walter Ramirez, Walter Lewis, Cecil Reyes, Irv Duff and

Emmanuel Omari for all that they do for us. While I verbally exclaim about occasional large and heavy jobs, these gentlemen never complain. Seldom do I have a chance to thank them but I think of them

every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday when the Shop opens.
