The Collegian has been Houston Baptist University’s student-run and operated newspaper since 1963. It reports campus news bi-weekly through a print edition, with a circulation of 2,500, and its website, www.hbucollegian.com.
More than 2,100 undergraduate and graduate students attend Houston Baptist University. Established in 1960, it is a Chris-tian liberal arts university dedicated to the development of the intellect, the moral character, and the spiritual lives of its stu-dents.
Located just off U.S. Highway 59, halfway between downtown Houston and the city’s southwestern suburbs, it is the perfect launching pad for students to explore the city and the profes-sional, social, and lifestyle advantages it offers.
The Collegian is the most direct and cost-effective way to reach these students.

Dr. Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State during President Bill Clinton’s administration and U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, will deliver a free, public lecture in the Morris Cultural Arts Center’s Uni-versity Theater, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11.
The lecture is part of the Lester and Sue Smith Dis-tinguished Lecture Series presented by the Houston Holocaust Museum. Al-bright is expected to discuss her life, career, the future of democracy and issues promoted by the Genocide Prevention Task Force, an organization of which she is co-chairman.
“It’s a tremendous opportunity for our students, faculty and staff to hear someone admired and re-spected worldwide who has functioned at such high governmental levels,” said President Robert B.
President Sloan and board of trustees chair Rick Bailey received a gift of $1 mil-lion from Dr. Stewart and Joella Morris of the Morris Foundation at a recent board meeting.
“The ongoing commitment of Stewart and Joella Morris to the vision of Houston Baptist University is an inspiration to us all,” said Charles Bacarisse, vice president for advancement.
Last winter the Morris’ charged the board of trustees and other University sup-porters with the task of raising as much money as they could. The Morris’ pledged to match whatever the board raised.
“This came at a really significant time for the University,” Sloan said, “because the University, just like the world econo-my, is experiencing pressure.”
“Joella and I give out of the bounty God has given us,” Morris said. “We hope our gift will be a seed to raise millions more for the students and programs of Houston Baptist University.”
They’ve been blessed to watch a dream grow into a reality; to see buildings and students where there were once only rice fields. This University has been blessed to have this wonderful couple as part of the greater HBU family for 50 years, Baca-risse said.
Sloan agreed, adding that the Univer-

Morris Foundation donates $1 million
The athletic conference accepts HBU as member.
The Universities record-breaking growth in enrollment has necessitated the building of new structures and improvement of cur-rent facilities, which costs money and re-quires planning.
In an effort to guide future growth and make the best use of current facilities, Dr Robert B. Sloan Jr. sought and received an $850,000 grant from Houston Endowment Inc. Aug.8 to underwrite a civil engineer-ing study. The purpose of the study seeks to identify the infrastructure needs of the cam-pus as it pertains to the network of facilities
that support the campus, said Eileen Crow-ell, vice president for operations
Houston Endowment Inc. has had a long-standing relationship with the University; having donated over $3.3 million to the Uni-versity since 1968 and is the fourth largest foundation contributor to HBU, said Charles Bacarisse, vice president for advancement.
“The foundation has always supported the University during pivotal moments in its history,” added Bacarisse.
The first gift from the foundation was for $150,000 to support the College of Nurs-ing, in 1968, and they also helped pay for the Student Center. However in recent years the school had not sought the support of the
