COM VOLUME 43 NO. 1 Dr. Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State during President Bill Clinton’s administration and U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, will deliver a free, public lecture in the Morris Cultural Arts Center’s Uni- versity Theater, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11. The lecture is part of the Lester and Sue Smith Dis- tinguished Lecture Series presented by the Houston Holocaust Museum. Al- bright is expected to discuss her life, career, the future of democracy and issues promoted by the Genocide Prevention Task Force, an organization of which she is co-chairman. “It’s a tremendous opportunity for our students, faculty and staff to hear someone admired and re- spected worldwide who has functioned at such high governmental levels,” said President Robert B. President Sloan and board of trustees chair Rick Bailey received a gift of $1 mil- lion from Dr. Stewart and Joella Morris of the Morris Foundation at a recent board meeting. “The ongoing commitment of Stewart and Joella Morris to the vision of Houston Baptist University is an inspiration to us all,” said Charles Bacarisse, vice president for advancement. Last winter the Morris’ charged the board of trustees and other University sup- porters with the task of raising as much money as they could. The Morris’ pledged to match whatever the board raised. “This came at a really significant time for the University,” Sloan said, “because the University, just like the world econo- my, is experiencing pressure.” “Joella and I give out of the bounty God has given us,” Morris said. “We hope our gift will be a seed to raise millions more for the students and programs of Houston Baptist University.” They’ve been blessed to watch a dream grow into a reality; to see buildings and students where there were once only rice fields. In an effort to guide future growth and make the best use of current facilities, Dr Robert B. Sloan Jr. sought and received an $850,000 grant from Houston Endowment Inc. Aug.8 to underwrite a civil engineer- ing study. Dr. Madeleine Albright, former U.S. Secretary of State during President Bill Clinton’s administration and U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, will deliver a free, public lecture in the Morris Cultural Arts Center’s Uni-versity Theater, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11.

Morris Foundation donates $1 million

The athletic conference accepts HBU as member.

The Universities record-breaking growth in enrollment has necessitated the building of new structures and improvement of cur-rent facilities, which costs money and re-quires planning.

In an effort to guide future growth and make the best use of current facilities, Dr Robert B. Sloan Jr. sought and received an $850,000 grant from Houston Endowment Inc.
