Thekeystosuccessaresimple.Firstofall,youhavetobeproactive.Takesomeinitiativeandputyourselfouttheretocolleges.Sendemails,makephonecalls,andvisitschools.Don’twaitforaschooltocontactyoufirst.Secondly,youhavetoberealistic.NotallplayerscanplayattheDivision I level. Berealistic-CanIcompeteatthecollegelevel?

Let'sberealistic. Collegesportpositionsandathleticscholarshipsaren'tavailabletoeveryone.YoushouldbeawarethatmoststudentathleteswillNOTbeabletoplayDivisionIsports.TherearetoomanyathletesandonlysomanyDivision1schools.However,thevastmajorityofcollegesoruniversitiesarenotDivision1schoolsandtheyhaveverycompetitivesportsprograms.

Youwillhavetomeetsomeimportantconditionstogettothenextlevel.Youmaybethe“star”athleteatyourhighschool,butyouwillneedtoknowhowyoumatchupwithotherstarhighschoolathletesaroundthecountry. You’llneedtoevaluateyouracademicandathleticabilitiesand determinewhat division level student athlete you are so you can target the right schoolswhereyouhavethebestchanceofreceivinganathleticscholarshiporincentivepackage.

Askallofyourcoachesandothersyouknowthatwillbehonestandcandidwithyou.Askthemwhat they think of your athletic abilities and at what division level they believe you couldcompetein.Youmayfindthatthetruthhurts,orperhapsyou’llbesurprisedtofindthatyouhaveunderestimatedyourabilities.Thisisacriticalfirststepintheprocess.Youmaywasteyourtimeif you focus your efforts on colleges in the wrong athletic division and with the incorrectacademicrequirements. Youwanttomakesureyouaretargetingtherightacademicschoolsintherightathletictalentdivision.

To compete at the college level, coaches are looking for a student athlete who possesses theapplicable academic and sport specific tools. After that, they look at character and mentaltoughnessthatmakeupthewill-to-winattitude following failure,performanceunderpressure,andrespectforfamilyandteammates.

Averysmallpercentageofhighschoolstudentathletesreceivecollegeopportunities,scholarshipsorincentivepackagesbecausethecoach“happenedtofindthem.”Onlytheeliteathletes,generallythetop100nationally,receiveenoughmediacoverageandrecognitionthattheyareautomaticallyrecruitedwithouthavingtomakeaneffort.Theother99%havetotaketheinitiativetocontactthecollegesandcoacheswheretheyhaveaninterest.

Most schools’ recruiting budgets are small, and coaches rely on YOU to contact them. Collegecoachesareverybusy;theydon’thavethetimeorbudgettotravelaroundthecountrytoseeyoucompete.Phonecalls,emails,CaptainU,stats,videoandreferencesbecomekeytoolsforthecoachintherecruitingandevaluatingprocess.Youmightthinkthatit’stooself-promotingtomaketheinitialcontactwithacoachandto“market”yourself,however,thisisthenorm.Ifyoudon’tdoit,otherstudentathleteswilltakeadvantageoftheopportunity,getnoticedandgetrecruitedbecausetheyhavemadetheeffortandreceivedtheattention.

College Coaches expect you to prepare academically. They expect that you understand thatpreparation academically is of primary importance to the recruiting process. This meanspreparingintheclassroomasmuchasonthefield.Failuretotakecareofyouracademicstandingoftenmeansfailuretoachieveathleticgoals. Asanexample,sinceDivisionIIIinstitutionsdonotofferathleticscholarships,academicperformance is justasvaluedasathleticperformance intherecruitingprocess.

Keepinmindmostcoachesareworkingwithlimitedbudgetsandverylittletime,staffandresources.Youhave tobepersistent,prepared, andpolite togetnoticedat anydivision. Ifnothingelse, everycoachwantsplayerswhocanenhancetheirprogram.Characterisakeycomponentofintegrity.Showyourcharacter!

•Beaneffectivecommunicator.Thestudentathlete(NOTTHEPARENTS)shouldwriteoremailthecoachwhenappropriate.Thestudentathleteshouldalwayscallthecoachbackwhentheycallyou.

GAMEPLANCONTINUEDTheNationalCollegiateAthleticAssociation(NCAA)governsthreedivisionsofcollegeathleticsand requires that students interested in playing on either Division I or Division II teams fileformsforcertificationofathleticeligibility.

TheformandtheNCAAGuidefortheCollegeBoundStudentAthlete,apublicationthatexplainstherulesandregulationsthatgovernrecruiting,eligibility,andfinancialaid,canbefoundattheNCAAwebsite atwww.ncaa.org. Studentswhowant to participate in Division I or Division IIsportsshouldstartthecertificationprocessbySeptemberoftheirsenioryear.Theprocedureisasfollows:IfyouwishtoparticipateinDivisionIorDivisionIIsports,youmustsubmityourSAT/ACTscoresdirectlytotheClearing-house.TheClearing-housecodeis9999.Youmustfillouta“DomesticStudentReleaseForm”(SRF)inSeptemberofyoursenioryear. NationalLetterofIntent:ANational Letter of Intent (NLI) is signed by a PSAwhen the student-athlete agrees toattend a Division I or II college or university for one academic year. Participatinginstitutionsagreetoprovidefinancialaidforoneacademicyeartothestudent-athleteaslongasthestudent-athleteisadmittedtotheschoolandiseligibleforfinancialaidunderNCAArules.Otherformsoffinancialaiddonotguaranteethestudent-athletefinancialaid.TheNationalLetterofIntentisvoluntaryandnotrequiredforastudent-athletetoreceivefinancialaidorparticipateinsports.SigningaNationalLetterofIntentendstherecruitingprocess since participating schools are prohibited from recruiting student-athleteswhohave already signed letters with other participating schools. A student-athlete who hassignedaNationalLetterofIntentmayrequestareleasefromhisorhercontractwiththeschool.Ifastudent-athletesignsaNationalLetterofIntentwithoneschoolbutattendsadifferent school, he or shewill lose one full year of eligibility andmust complete a fullacademicyearattheirnewschoolbeforebeingeligibletocompete.OfficialVisit:Anyvisit toacollegecampusbyaPSAorherparentspaid forbythecollege isanofficialvisit.Duringanofficialvisitthecollegecanpayfortransportationtoandfromthecollegefortheprospect, lodgingandthreemealsperdayforboththeprospectandtheparentorguardian,aswellasreasonableentertainmentexpenses includingthreetickets toahomesportsevent.QuietPeriod:During a quiet period, a college coachmay not have face-to-face contactwith a PSA ortheir parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools.CoachesmaywriteortelephoneaPSAortheirparentsduringthistime.UnofficialVisit:Visitspaidforbycollege-boundstudent-athletesortheirparentsareunofficialvisits.TheonlyexpensesaPSAmayreceivefromacollegeduringanunofficialvisitarethreeticketstoahomesportsevent.

NCAADivisionICoaches can begin calling September 1st after your Junior year – Coaches can now begincallingrecruitsonceperweekwithunlimitedphonecallsallowedduringthecontactperiod.Thismeansacoachcannowcallyouinsteadofyouhavingtocallthem.Therulesstillallowacoachtospeakwitharecruitanytimeyoumakethephonecall.IfyouarenottalkingtoDIcoaches on the phone by this point in your senior year it is time to re-evaluate yourrecruitingoptions.Off-Campuscontactisallowed–Thismeanscoachesareallowedtobeginvisiting(talkingtoyou)offoftheircampus.Thisruleismisleadingbecausecoachesarealwaysallowedtogowatch you play in tournaments; they are just restricted in the interactions they can havewithyou.Also, youcanalwaysgovisit a coachon their campusandtalkwith them there(youshouldhavebeendoingthissinceyourJunioryearatleast).CoachescanbringyouinonOfficialVisitsstartingthefirstdayofclasses–Thismeansacoachcannowpaytobringyouinonavisit,hostyouoncampusandpayformealsandgame tickets. Given the factmany coaches are getting verbal offers from recruits in theSophomoreandJunioryears,officialvisitsaremoreofatreatandnotessentialrecruitingtool. You should have already been making Unofficial Visits to the campus you areinterestedin.NCAADivisionIITheonlythingthatchangesforDIIrecruitingisthatcoachescannowbringrecruitsinonofficialvisits.CoachesatDIIschoolshavebeenallowedtocallandemailrecruitsforoverayear.NCAADivisionIIIDIIIcoachescannowbringyouinonofficialvisits.TheyhavebeenallowedtocalloremailyousinceyourFreshmanyear.NAIANorestrictions.

NCAADivisionIForthemostpart,Coachesarerestrictedininitiatingcontactwithrecruits-Theyarenotallowed to call, email or send letters to recruits in their freshman or sophomore years.However,theycanspeaktoyouifyoucallthem.Thisdoesn’tmeanyoushouldn’tbedoinganything; you should be emailing coaches, attending camps and playing in tournamentsandshowcasestogetyournameoutthereandgetonthecoachesrecruitingboards.Youcanalwaysmakeanunofficialvisittothecollegecampus.NCAADivisionIICoachescanbegincalling,emailing,sendingletterstoandhavingoff-campuscontactwithrecruitsstartingJune15thaftertheirsophomoreyear.Thismeansthereisnoexcuseforacoach not to be responding to you unless you are contacting thewrong coaches or notcontactingtheminawaywheretheywillrespondtoyou.NCAADivisionIIICoachesareallowedtoemailandcallrecruitsatanypointonceyoubeginhighschool.ManyDIIIcoachesshyawayfrombeginningtherecruitingprocesstooearlybecausealotcanchangewitharecruitfromtheirsophomoreyearandsenioryear.Youshouldstillbeemailingandcallingthesecoachesifyouareinterestedintheirschool.NAIANorestrictions.
