My role as COE Dean

• Engage all constituents in collegiate issues discussions, as appropriate.

• Assure a positive, welcoming, high-morale, and high-quality working environment.

• Hold strategic discussions about realistic future academic and research directions of the college and its departments, centers, and programs.

• Advocate for the College both internally and externally so as to position the College favorably within and without the University.

• Effectively represent the College’s interests across the University and the community.

• Effectively manage College resources whether human, fiscal, or facilities related.

• Be an all-around role model for the College Faculty, Administration, Staff, Students, and Alumni.

My role as COE Dean

• Engage in fund-raising activities leading to externally funded scholarships, professorships, endowments, programs, facilities, etc.

• Oversee accreditation, program review, and other processes that are critical for continuous improvement of the College’s activities.

• Engage with the Council of Deans in key discussions involving policy, institutional planning, and other key activities.

• Assure the hiring of highly effective direct reports, such as Department Chairs, Program Directors, Associate Deans, and Staff.

• Conduct regular performance evaluations of direct reports, and assure their accountability for high-level performance in all areas appropriate to their positions.

• Assure proper coordination of all College parts – departments, centers, academic programs, economic development activities, public service, and other activities.

Motivation and interest in the position

I believe that we can build upon what we have to ensure continuous progress without

compromising quality and standards, while treating our Human Assets with dignity and

fairness

I believe that our College deserves a reasonable number of candidates from whom to chose the

next COE Dean

In 2000, among others, we set out to :

• INCREASE TOTAL ENROLLMENT

• INCREASE EXTERNAL RESEARCH FUNDING

• INCREASE THE NUMBER OF FULL-TIME FACULTY

• SECURE ABET PROGRAM ACCREDITATION

• INTRODUCE AND DEVELOP WINNING SENIOR DESIGN PROJECTS & ENHANCE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT

2000 ECE DEPARTMENTAL GOALS… 13 years later

INCREASED TOTAL ENROLLMENT by 92%

INCREASED EXTERNAL RESEARCH FUNDING by over 1,300%

Over $3M pending… could surpass the $5M mark by 30 June 2013!

2000-2013: Retirements – 3 Separations – 3

OBTAINED ABET ACCREDITATION – Fall 2001, 2007, & 2013

Full EE & CpE 6-year ABET accreditation

INTRODUCED & DEVELOPED WINNING SENIOR DESIGN PROJECTS & Student Competitions – Capstone design projects and student competitions performance speak for themselves!

Established and grew the ECE Advisory Council to 22 members

Established 24 New Scholarships & the Senior Design Fund

Electrical Engineering became Electrical and Computer Engineering

Established the Center for Advanced Vehicles and Energy Systems (CAVES) – Secured BoT approval

CAVES Unofficial Center Director – funding exceeds $20 Million involving over 50 companies!)
