The Global Research Challenge is a competition
overseen by the CFA Institute. At Local
competitions, student teams are introduced to a
publicly traded company and have to prepare an
"Initiation of Coverage" report similar to what
Wall Street financial analysts produce. Students
have to research the firm, its industry,
competitors, market conditions and use several
different techniques to value the firm. In addition
to a written report, the team will also deliver an
oral presentation to a panel of judges made up of
investment professionals and fund managers.
The Americas Regional competition will be in
Denver and the Global Finals will be in Bangkok,
Thailand.

This project will address the overarching issues in
agricultural practices in Haiti by focusing
specifically on aquaculture, irrigation, and
livestock issues in Haiti. Students are seeking to
promote and implement aquaculture as a
marketable source of income to the people of
Cange by using resources in Haiti, introducing a
variety of species, and creating jobs. Through
changes in livestock management resulting
livestock quality improvement, the people of
Cange, Haiti may benefit in livestock
marketability and thereby economic
circumstance.

CMU Block
2013-2014 Accountancy
and Finance
Currently in Haiti, concrete blocks are not testing
at proper strength and aggregate is not being
sorted properly. As a result the only ASTM
certified blocks comes from The Dominican
Republic, which does not contribute to Haiti’s
economy. Therefore, the mission of the CMU
Block project is to improve the manufacturing
process by implementing ASTM standards,
improving the use of sieves and different sizes of
aggregate. If the Domond CMU plant can achieve
ASTM certification they can create jobs and boost
the local economy.

CEDC5: Waste
Management
2013-2014 Accountancy
and Finance
Cange, Haiti has a serious lack of any systematic
disposal method for solid municipal waste.
Burning, and the more problematic practice of
dumping, are widespread and are more serious
concerns in the area. Composting, recycling, and
reuse are sporadically used in the area; however,
a more widespread system and management
strategy will be required to remove the existing
and newsly generated waste. The purpose of
CEDC Waste Management is to design a viable
waste management system for the town of
Cange, Haiti. The mission of this project team is
to design a waste management system that
empowers the local people to achieve sustainable
waste disposal while benefiting both the
sanitation and environmental quality of Cange.

The intention of the Clay Group is to increase the
strength of the clay coming from the local factory
by means of implementing and teaching better
design mixes, curing processes, and uniformity in
the finished project. After the product is
strengthened, we intended to utilize resources in
Cange and teach the residents in a way that will
improve their lifestyle and help work towards the
betterment of the community. Hopefully this will
become possible through the production/molding
and retailing of clay products. With the help of
funders and partners in Cange, we hope to set up
a self-sustaining industry with a complete
training and manufacturing process that would
promote economic growth.

There is currently a lack of communication
between NGOs in Haiti, with all the NGO aid that
is currently in Haiti, a connection must be
established in order to work together for the
most benefit to both parties. The mission of this
group therefore is to create a database and a
procedure with the ultimate goal of helping one
another help Haiti.

The Teaching ESL Creative Inquiry will provide
service to the international community,
international students and the undergraduate
global learning environment. Clemson students
will learn a marketable skill and gain international
working experience while internationals in the
community learn to speak English—a necessary
skill in securing a job in the area. Students will
research methodologies for best teaching English
as a second language.

Economic
Development of
Marketplace
2013-2014 Economics The Market Place team exists to develop a safe
and functioning marketplace in Cange, Haiti. This
will be accomplished by communicating with
interns and personnel on the ground in Cange,
Haiti in order to determine the need and the
location of a future communal marketplace for
the benefit of the people of Cange as well as the
surrounding region. The team will propose a
design that would provide the people of Cange a
place to buy and sell goods. Implementing this
design would stimulate the economy as well as
allow for continued economic growth in the
community and in the surrounding areas. The
final product will be a comprehensive design of
the marketplace including the materials, costs,
schedule, and location of the future marketplace.
With the approval of the leadership of Cange, this
proposed design will be executed. In Cange,
Haiti, there is currently a problem with
unemployment and a lack of economic stability.
Communication with the women of Cange has
expressed an interest in forming cooperative
economic programs. The goal is to empower
women through a cooperative business model
that will ultimately help them establish economic
independence and expand the market by
mentoring other women. To additionally
supplement possible economic growth and
infrastructure our team will be examine the
processing and production of indigo.

research: While astronaut crews have
successfully conducted a range of missions over
the past several decades, moving to long
duration space exploration is a new and
uncharted territory that has many unknown
implications. Although much of the focus has
been on how to physically get astronauts to
destinations like Mars, we also need to
understand how to prepare these crews to
interact effectively as a team--that is, how do we
take this team of experts and turn them into an
expert team?

International
Justice
2013-2014 Psychology Currently, 27 million people are in bondage,
whether as a victim of human trafficking, slave
labor, or debt bondage. Although most people
have heard in passing about human trafficking,
they are unaware of the fact that they, in all
likelihood, have come into personal contact on
more than one occasion with a victim of
trafficking. The purpose of this CI team is to
increase student knowledge of the problem,
conduct research to assess how much Clemson
students throughout campus know (or, more
likely, don't know) about the problem, and then
create a campus-wide awareness campaign in
which the data we collect are incorporated in and
distributed with materials created by the CI team
to increase awareness. Students become well-
versed not only in research methodology, but
also in how to take an active role in making a
difference in the lives of those who cannot help
themselves.

how to use the latest cutting-edge technological
applications. Current project components involve
the use of GIS (Geographic Information

International Business
Academic Discipline
Management Managing international trade has always been central to the business strategy of European and Japanese firms, but has only recently been recognized as significant by the American government, academics and business firms. The increasing international competition of the past two decades and the resulting
enormous trade deficits have led to a new emphasis on international trade. To survive and prosper, businesses must learn to exploit international competitive advantages, to manage competition with imports and to understand the role of
governments in influencing the terms of international competition.
Global
Supply Chain and Operations
Management
Academic Discipline
Management Supply chain and operations management functions — managing the processes by which goods and services are sourced, created and distributed — are critical
to the success of virtually all businesses and increasingly important to globalization. The department houses an Enterprise Management Laboratory where students can conduct research and implement many of the concepts learned in the classroom. Faculty in this area are engaged in a rich variety of research that focuses on both strategic and tactical aspects of operations planning and control. In
addition, faculty are also engaged in developing state-of-the art systems for use in these areas.
Within supply chain and operations management, logistics is a comparatively new area in business education. Its primary concern is the efficient physical distribution of a company's product. In addition to traffic management, the
