Students are allowed 2 days out of school that do not count against their perfect attendance records.

Try to schedule visits over fall break. Colleges will be in session, so students will get a real “feel” of what that college is like.

more than 1 college their senior year. 2-3 colleges is recommended.

Common Questions & Application Tips► High school transcripts include semester grades from years 9, 10, 11 as well as test scores, cumulative

GPA, and class rank

► Transcripts are uploaded from PowerSchool to Naviance once requested by the student. Please give us time to submit transcripts.

► There is some processing time between the time a transcript is submitted to a college and the actual “received” date by the college; it is best to not wait until the last minute to submit an application & request a transcript

► Students should contact us if they need a transcript for a scholarship- transcripts are not sent to scholarship organizations through Naviance; they are only sent to colleges

► Students should take their time with completing a college application. Most applications are savable Check to be sure the application is complete in its entirety Indicate the correct “starting term” on the college application (Ex. Fall 2018; freshman applicant) Check spelling, grammar, and punctuation in application Students should list extra-curricular activities, awards, jobs/internships, volunteer work, etc.

► Students should finish the senior year strong- final transcripts will be sent next summer

Clarifying Common Misconceptions► We do not have access to student SAT and ACT accounts, and therefore, cannot see if

test scores have been sent to the college(s) from student SAT/ACT accounts.

► We do not have access to student college applications nor usernames and passwords. We recommend finding an app for remembering log-in information.

► We cannot see if all student materials have been received by the college. Only students can check their status. We can only see if the transcript, secondary school report, & letters of rec have been sent via Naviance.

► Students do not have access to their transcript in Naviance. Students should see Mrs. Martin or Mr. Patterson if they would like a copy for filling out a college application.

► We cannot see when students have submitted a college application.

• Most colleges require one or the other (you don’t have to take both)

• Most colleges will super-score if more than one set of test scores are sent; however, the “old SAT” and “new SAT” cannot be super-scored.

• Recommended to take writing/essay portion as well

• The ACT and SAT websites provide dates by which students will receive their scores.

SENDING SCORES TO COLLEGES

Most colleges require “official” SAT and ACT scores to be sent directly to them from your SAT and ACT accounts.

If scores have not already been sent to these schools, students may make their requests to have them sent

through the online student account they created when they first registered for the SAT or ACT.

Students should also check their accounts to see their history of sent scores.

Please do not miss deadlines due to missing test scores!

Biography For Letters Of Recommendation in Naviance

The biography is very helpful for teachers writing a letter of recommendation. Students are asked to answer 8 prompts. The biography also assists in the counselor school report formthat is sent to colleges.

Teacher Letters of Recommendation► Check college admission websites to see if a teacher letter of recommendation

is required► Teacher letters of recommendation are sent to colleges through Naviance.

BHS teachers upload letters to Naviance and then we will send them.► Please give the recommender at least 2 weeks notice► To request a letter of recommendation, it is important for students to request

it in Naviance. See the BHS College Application Checklist handout for step-by-step instructions.

► Students are prevented from requesting more than the max number of letters of recommendation allowed by the college

WHY USE IT?Once completed online or in print, copies of the Application for Undergraduate Admission can be sent to any number of participating colleges (nearly 700 colleges).

This allows you to spend less time on the busywork of applying for admission, and more time on what's really important: college research, visits, essay writing, and senior year coursework.

Leave the “Final” Semester Grade BLANK for each class- only indicate your letter grades for S1 & S2

Common App Submission

Don’t hesitate to see Mrs. Martin if you have questions about the Common App. You should receive an email confirmation once your application is submitted.

The yellow circles indicate you are still working and nothing has been submitted. The yellow circles will turn to green once you have submitted the application and writing supplement (if required) to that college.

A dash will appear if the writing supplement is not required for a college in your dashboard.

Common App SubmissionFor IU-Bloomington For Purdue

For IU’s Common App, students must submit both the “Application” and “Writing Supplement” separately. Submit the

Application first followed by the Writing Supplement.

For PU’s Common App, students must submit only the “Application.” The “Writing

Supplement” is not required for Purdue.

All sections will switch from “Incomplete” to “Ready” when complete. Then students can submit the app.

Matching the Common App Account with Naviance

•Students need to type their email address in the box provided- the same email address that was used for their Common Application account•Click “Match” to match their Naviance account to their Common App

Complete the “FERPA Waiver and Authorization” section in your Common App beforehand.

Application Fees & Fee Waivers► Most applications have a fee (many private schools do not)► It varies by college on the fee amount► Students who receive lunch assistance and/or are a 21st Century Scholar

qualify for a fee waiver.► If students do qualify for a fee waiver, they should mark it on the college

application (if asked).► If students are submitting the Common Application to a college, you will need

to complete the fee waiver section on your profile and we will verify your eligibility in Naviance when sending your transcript and Common App school report to the college.

► If students are submitting a non-CommonApplication (like IU’s Apply IU Application), they need to see Mrs. Martin in person for a fee waiver form.

Application Status & Communication from Colleges

► Students should regularly check communications from the college(s) Some colleges may communicate to students via e-mail to let them know if all materials have

been received (application, transcript, test scores, application fee, any required letter of rec, etc)

Some colleges may inform students to create an account with them in order to check their “Application Status” to ensure all materials have been received.

It varies by college on the turn-around time for receiving an admission decision. Students should regularly check their e-mail, mail, and any accounts they have created with the college.

If a college has given you a deferred/waitlisted decision, please let Mrs. Martin know. The college will want additional information to be sent, such as new test scores and/or 7th semester grades (1st semester of senior year).
