College e-Portfolio and HE admissions

Peter Rees Jones

What is an ePortfolio?

“…this is a really important point; we will have to re-engineer the data so that wherever you are in the education system the individual learner can demonstrate to another institution, an employer, or to a parent, what they have done, how they are succeeding and who they are.”

(Michael Stevenson head of DfES Technical Group January 2006) http://www.tes.co.uk/search/story/?story_id=2166552

What is an ePortfolio?

“E-portfolios….are personal online spaces for students to access services and store work. They will become ever more useful as learners grow up and start moving between different types of learning and different institutions.”

(Ruth Kelly Secretary of State for Education, January 2006)

JISC have demonstrated that the service oriented approach of the e-Framework has the capacity to

reduce a complex problem such as ePortfolio for Lifelong Learning to

the simpler terms in which it becomes capable of practical

implementation

DfES TG are reviewing how JISC work, including the Nottingham work in schools, colleges and universities can contribute to

national developments

eP Reference Model: The Key Outcome

Knowledge Architecture

E-maturity

Personalised content

Strategic technology provision

A consistent system-wide framework to

guide delivery

A model for the deployment of

technology across the system

Driving a new model of content provision for

the individual

Supporting people and organisations &

measuring system level impact

The four transformational themes to take forward the e-strategy …

College e-Portfolio & HE admissions

“The JISC project…. is reviewing how admissions staff use information and evidence.

The project aims to make information and evidence available in an

accessible electronic form that can be customised to support the admissions process and give feedback to the applicant.

The Project is specifically examining the potential of entry criteria

and course information to structure the personal statement. This would allow academic staff to set prompts for their own courses.”

“UCAS and other admissions services should also consider the

inclusion of additional information to produce a fuller transcript of applicants’ achievement. A more informative application form may in itself reduce the need for additional testing”

(Stephen Schwartz Fair Admissions to higher education: recommendations for good practice p. 48; E9)

10. I carry through the plan and apply to HE

• One of the actions in the plan is to develop a Personal Statement.

• The ePortfolio Reference Model will demonstrate a set of web services within the application to HE process.

• The web services help the applicant draw on their ePortfolio to complete the Personal Statement (and a referee to add comments).

• Other web services will be specified to repurpose the information so that an admissions officer can make effective use of richer information at no extra cost in terms of staff time

Formative re-use for Personal Development

• The Learner has undertaken a diagnostic exercise to map himself to an HE course.

• The same web services can be used formatively for trial applications which the advisor assesses.

Induction to HE • In the application process the Personal

Statement is used summatively to make a decision

• In colleges the Personal Statement can be used diagnostically or formatively by the student and their advisor, as we will show

• It could also be used for formatively for induction to HE.
