students which include addressing affective or non-cognitive skills such as identity,

culture, and civics, culturally responsive teaching and highly engaging pedagogy.)

events/activities

Actively support the annual Latino Youth Conference

Support external opportunities

Continue community collaborations

Resource development and maintenance (marketing materials, Spanish website, translated documents)

Provide ongoing academic student support (from key staff members in the following areas: Admissions, testing, FastTrack, advising, tutoring, Financial aid, CLS 100, mentoring, ESL support, and transportation assistance).

4. What measureable criteria will be used to determine this project’s success?

Number of students enrolling in CLS 100

Number of students attending engagement activities offered by the Latino team

Enrollment, persistence, and graduation rate of Latino students

5. Please provide the results of your lead measures to date (either tables or charts) The CAP team has engaged in the following activities: CLS 100: Fifty-eight students were recruited for the Fall 2015 semester. All students were able to

complete MyDegreePath lesson. Eighty-Nine point six percent (89.6%) earned a grade of C or

better. Seventy-Nine point three percent (79.3%) enrolled for the Winter 2016 semester (some

did not enroll for Winter due to financial challenges, especially our DACA/Undocumented

students).

Retention Rates for Latino CLS 100 Fall 2015 Cohort (Graph below):

Of the 58 students who enrolled in the three sections of Latino CLS 100 in Fall 2015, seventy-nine percent (79%) enrolled in Winter 2016.

Sixty two percent (62%) of Fall 2015 Latino CLS 100 students are currently enrolled for Fall 2016.

3 | P a g e

Fall 2015 to Fall 2016 retention rate for the Latino CLS 100 students is higher (62%) compared to that of all FTIAC students in CLS 100 (54%).

2016-2017:

Recruitment and enrollment in Latino CLS 100 will continue this year. For Fall 2016, there are currently two sections of Latino CLS 100. There are currently 40 students enrolled. The CAP team will continue to monitor and support these students. Planning for Winter 2017 Latino CLS 100 is underway. Eligible students have been identified and sections have been requested.

Student Engagement Activities: The CAP team implemented several engagement opportunities for students throughout the 2015-2016 year. Some of these include:

Conectate (Fall 2015): a welcoming event to connect FTIAC Latino students and their families to staff and resources at GRCC.

Dia de los Muertos/ Day of the Dead Celebration (Fall 2015): a Day of the Day altar and celebration took place at the College Success Center on November 2, 2015. Students, staff, and faculty dropped by and enjoyed music, food, and conversation about the significance of this celebration.

Dia de La Mujer Conference at MSU (Winter 2016): coordinated logistics to take a group of Latina students to East Lansing for the conference in April 2016. Covered registration costs and provided $10 gas cards for students.

Marketing materials: The team distributed more materials in the community promoting our services and support to Latino students.

DACA/Undocumented Guide: The team developed this guide as a resource for students. 2016-2017:

Translated documents: The GRCC Foundation Scholarship Handbook is almost completely translated to Spanish. Once the index is translated, this project will be completed.

Marketing materials are currently being updated to align with the new efforts and activities that the CAP team will be prioritizing this year.

DACA/Undocumented Guide: the guide is currently being updated and prepared for printing for this year.

Support external opportunities 2016-2017:

The CAP team has promoted and supported the following activities so far: o Bi-lingual College Fair: October 13, 6:30pm-8pm at Cesar Chavez Elementary

(along with Admissions counselor)

Page 5: College Action Project Worksheet for CAP Projects June 16 ... · 2 | P a g e *The goals has been updated from 2015-2016 to reflect priorities for the 2016-2017 year The following

o The CAP team actively promoted the Hispanic/Latino Commission of Michigan Scholarship to all Latino students currently enrolled. Student interest was high. Sonya Hernandez, who teaches a Latino CLS 100 class and is a member of the CAP team, also serves as a Commissioner and confirmed that the number of applications from GRCC students reached an all-time high this year.

Continue community collaborations: 2016-2017:

The CAP team has a strong collaboration with the West Michigan Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. We will be supporting two events in November. The first will be the Career Fair Workshop Event on November 7th from 6pm-8pm. GRCC will be hosting the event in the ATC. This event will be primarily for GRCC students. It will offer four presentations (networking, branding, social media & resume critiquing, and interviewing). These workshops will serve to prepare students for a second event, the Latino Career Fair. The Career Fair will be November 10th at the DeVos Place. The CAP team will actively promote and support these efforts.

Hispanic Center of West Michigan: Two CAP team members are confirmed to attend a Parent Night at the Center on November 16th. They will be meeting with families to discuss support and resources available to Latino, Undocumented, and/or DACAmented students.

Provide ongoing academic student support 2016-2017:

The CAP team will be launching an email campaign during the week of October 24 to all Latino students currently enrolled. The purpose of the email will be to check-in with students and provide assistance or referrals to the various service areas and resources available on campus to ensure a successful Fall semester. A Blackboard group has been created in order to communicate with students this semester, as well.

A.L.A.S. Mentoring Program The Assisting Latinos to Achieve and Succeed (ALAS) Mentoring Program was piloted during the Winter 2016 semester. Program design and development took place during the Fall 2015 semester, including identifying the application and matching process for mentors and mentees and training and orientation development and delivery. There were 18 active mentor/mentee pairs. Several activities were implemented in support of the ALAS program, including:

Training/Orientation for the mentors and mentees

“La Platica” series: 3 separate events in which speakers shared strategies for success

Routine check-ins with both mentors and mentees

Engagement activities for participants (luncheons, vision board activity, etc.) 2016-2017:

Page 6: College Action Project Worksheet for CAP Projects June 16 ... · 2 | P a g e *The goals has been updated from 2015-2016 to reflect priorities for the 2016-2017 year The following

6 | P a g e

The A.L.A.S. Mentoring Program will not be implemented this year due to a lack of resources (time, personnel to coordinate logistics, etc.) which made it challenging for the CAP team to fully engage both mentors and mentees throughout the Winter 2016 semester. “La Platica” speaker series will also be discontinued.

Enrollment and Retention Data: The data illustrated in the graphs that follow indicate gains in both enrollment and retention of our Latino student population. Not only are more Latino students enrolling at GRCC than ever before, but more are returning semester to semester and year to year. Fall Enrollment:

Latino student enrollment increased to 1,807 and made up 12.5 percent of the total population.

Minority students make up 28.6% of our student population. Latinos are the largest minority group on campus.

One year retention rate for Latino FTIAC students from Fall 2015 returning for Fall 2016 (54%) is higher compared to the retention rate for all FTIAC students (53%).

Hosted 2nd annual Day of the Dead celebration on November 2. The event took place at the Woodrick Center for Equity and Inclusion from 9am to 4:30pm. While the event was intentionally promoted to Latino students; student attendance was diverse. Refreshments were provided (tamales, horchata, hibiscus tea, authentic Latino candies, and pan dulce/Mexican pastries). "Dia de los Muertos" is a holiday celebrated in Mexico (and many other countries) that honors family and friends who have passed on. An altar was set up at the Center for Equity and Inclusion. Over 50 students, staff, and faculty attended the event throughout the day. Several students (at least 7) stopped by the Center for Equity and Inclusion after the event to inquire about Latino student support (including resources for undocumented/DACAmented
