Presentation Notes:• It’s important that you know and understand all of the available sources of funding for

college. Hopefully, you will be able to answer the questions. If not, I hope you will remember the questions so that you can ask them at a later date.

• The Office of Student Financial Aid is a customer service office, and we do offer one on one appointments as well as a variety of other workshops, presentations, e‐lounges and other opportunities throughout the year.

Financial aid is funding you apply for that allows you to obtain a college education.

A responsible student should be able to answer these questions:• What type(s) of financial aid do I have?• What is the renewal process for my aid types? • Does my aid have specific requirements such as GPA or employment specifications?• What type of aid has to be repaid? • When does repayment begin? • What are my rights and responsibilities?

Presentation Notes:We encourage all students to consider student loans as a last option. However, for many students such as those pursuing a second degree, loans are your only award options aside from scholarships and state grant funds. •Federal student loans are one of the most common student loans because they typically have the lowest interest rates and fees, the loans are deferred while the student is enrolled at least half time, there is flexibility in repayment, and there are forgiveness programs.•Once you have accepted a loan a master promissory note and loan entrance counseling must be completed online at studentloans.gov. TWU requires Entrance Counseling and/or Debt Management to be done every year. •The State of Texas has two student loan programs available as well. Usually they have additional requirements, for example, you have to be a Texas Resident at the time of applying. •These loans are not borrowed from the government, or the university but rather directly from a lender and without certain benefits offered through federal student loan programs.•Private loans should be you absolute last resort. These loans are not eligible for consolidation with federal loans. If you borrow more than one alternative loan from a single lender you will receive what is know as a combined bill for all the loans borrowed once you enter repayment. However, this is not the same as consolidation. Be very careful when selecting a private lender. Private lenders are not required to offer deferments or forbearances for anyone borrower who is returning to school, or who is having financial hardship.

Presentation Notes:When searching for scholarships, keep in mind that while the process is similar to applying to colleges, it takes more effort and the is more competitive. While the majority of scholarships students receive are through the university, there are millions of dollars out there in private scholarships –which are independent of the university. EX: Coca Cola Scholarships, the Dell Scholars Program, and the Dr. Pepper Scholarship. It doesn’t hurt to complete a profile on one of the following scholarship search engines: cappex or fastweb.
