DESCRIPTION OF SITE AND LEARNERS
I currently volunteer at Ramey School, a Department of Defense Coast Guardestablishment, in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. It houses Pre-K through 12th grade. The school
has an enrollment is 492 students. There are 42 certified teachers, and 20 classified staffmembers. The school's media center is located in the very front section of the campus near
the administrative offices. It houses 27, 872 books, which gives the center an average of 56books per student. The media center has approximately 316 titles in their audiovisual section.
The computer area houses 25 student use computers, and a SmartBoard.Aguadilla, Puerto Rico is located on the northwest section of Puerto Rico. The students
that attend the school are dependents of Federal employees. There is a very small section, about 5%, of students that are drawn from Coast Guard dependents who are serving in the
area for a three to five year term. The remaining 95% are all local Puerto Rican borndependents whose parents work in some capacity for the Federal Government. Therefore,
the school's primary language is spanish. The majority of conversation is spoken in Spanishand English around the campus. All instruction however, is taught in English. There is asmall section of books located in the back of the Media Center that are written in Spanish butthey are mostly purchased for the high school Spanish teacher.
There are 10 teachers at Ramey who teach various subject area to the seventh graders. There is a total of 48 seventh grade students enrolled at the school. There are 4 students
have qualified for the gifted program, 3 students are in special education, and 12 that arecurrently enrolled in the ESL program. The students in the ESL program as currently being
phased out and fully mainstreamed by the beginning of next year. The reading levels of the48 seventh graders vary but most are currently on grade level due to the fact that they have
been enrolled at Ramey for quite some time. Also, the community of Aguadilla is primarilybilingual. While Spanish is spoken in the home both English and Spanish are spoken outside
of the confines of their house. There are currently 8 students that are below reading level, and they range from a 4.5-6.8 reading levels. The remaining 40 are either right on target or
above with their reading test scores. The racial breakdown is as follows:African American: 2Caucasian: 4
Hispanic: 42Asian: 0

COLLECTION REVIEW
Volunteering in the Ramey Media Center enabled me to be able to know exactly whatwas available for the stated standards. Ramey however, does not follow Georgia State
Standards so this was not a 7th grade objective yet African studies are taught in 9th grade. The school's selection was somewhat lacking. I searched "Africa" on the school's databaseand pulled up the relevant material listed below in this report. I also went and physically
looked over material that the Media Center had on hand. I used the following online catalogsfor the "ordering of new materials": Amazon, Scholastic, and Delaney. I used a regular
catalog from Mackin. The Media Center is set up with large stacked bookcases that house all material except
the easy reading section. The easy section is located in an area closest to the front entrance.Reference material is located near the audiovisual material and is near large tables for
research. However, most students use the computer to find information regarding the subjectarea.
The books that were found for this project were almost all relatively new. There were acouple that were in need of repair and the Media Specialist and I took care of their needs.
There is only one visual material and one audio selection on this subject and that issomething I will address in the ordering part of this project.
There are over 27,000 books located in the Media Center. The books on Africa andmaterials have been checked out a little over 200 times during the course of the year.
Looking over the content material that is available currently is quite thorough however, thereis not enough material for all students to have access at the same time. This will also be
addressed in the ordering phase of this project. The final aspect that needs to be addressed is the multicultural aspect of the books. I
was pleased to see how many books discussed the differences between cultures andreligions within Africa.
Collection Needs:1. Choose resources that have been published within the last 10 years, if possible.
2. Choose more audiovisual materials as this area is greatly neglected.3. Choose more books focusing on the similarities and differences between cultures and
religions.
