thy Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of thy Name; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The people are seated.

FIRST LESSON Job 38:1-7A reading from the book of Job.

Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind: "Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me.

"Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements-- surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? "

Reader The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

PSALM 104:1-9, 25, 37B (said in unison)

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul; * O LORD my God, how excellent is your greatness! you are clothed with majesty and splendor.

2 You wrap yourself with light as with a cloak * and spread out the heavens like a curtain.

3 You lay the beams of your chambers in the waters above; * you make the clouds your chariot;

4

Page 5: Collect of the Web viewAlmighty and everliving God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, ... All Saints’ Dixieland Mass on Nov. 1

you ride on the wings of the wind.

4 You make the winds your messengers * and flames of fire your servants.

5 You have set the earth upon its foundations, * so that it never shall move at any time.

6 You covered it with the Deep as with a mantle; * the waters stood higher than the mountains.

7 At your rebuke they fled; * at the voice of your thunder they hastened away.

8 They went up into the hills and down to the valleys beneath, to the places you had appointed for them.

9 You set the limits that they should not pass; * they shall not again cover the earth.

25 O LORD, how manifold are your works! * in wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

37b Hallelujah!

SECOND READING Hebrews 5:1-10

A reading from Paul’s letter to the Hebrews.

Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was.

5

Page 6: Collect of the Web viewAlmighty and everliving God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, ... All Saints’ Dixieland Mass on Nov. 1

So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him,

"You are my Son, today I have begotten you";

as he says also in another place,"You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek."

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Reader The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

The people stand as they are able. HOLY GOSPEL Mark 10:35-45

Priest The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark.People Glory be to thee, O Christ.

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward to Jesus and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." And he said to them, "What is it you want me to do for you?" And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory." But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" They replied, "We are able."

6

Page 7: Collect of the Web viewAlmighty and everliving God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, ... All Saints’ Dixieland Mass on Nov. 1

Then Jesus said to them, "The cup that I drink you will drink; and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized; but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared."

When the ten heard this, they began to be angry with James and John. So Jesus called them and said to them, "You know that among the Gentiles those whom they recognize as their rulers lord it over them, and their great ones are tyrants over them. But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many."Priest The Gospel of the Lord.

People Praise be to thee, O Christ.

he came down from heaven:by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of

sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead,

overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,Celebrant and PeopleHoly, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts:Heaven and earth are full of thy glory.Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High.Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

All glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there, by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again.

For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.”

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly beloved Son our Savior Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and make here before thy divine Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his

12

mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable benefits procured unto us by the same. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us; and, of thy almighty goodness, vouchsafe to bless and sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, these thy gifts and creatures of bread and wine; that we, receiving them according to thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus Christ, and through faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission of our sins, and all other benefits of his passion. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee that we, and all others who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction, and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him.And although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice, yet we beseech thee to accept this our bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses, through Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

The Celebrant then continuesAnd now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say,People and CelebrantOur Father, who art in heaven,

13

Page 14: Collect of the Web viewAlmighty and everliving God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, ... All Saints’ Dixieland Mass on Nov. 1

hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

A period of silence is kept.

Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy.

Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.
