Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Education Requirements ATTENTION BMN, MNSP, and NDS STUDENTS: All BMN, MNSP, and NDS students need to complete their CITI Training Certification which is required education in the protection of human subjects (ethics or research with human subjects or data) and is degree requirement. Please plan on completing your CITI Certification as soon as possible and PRIOR TO THE FIRST DAY OF CLASSES IN YOUR FIRST SEMESTER. ABOUT THE CITI TRAINING: The CITI Training Requirement applies to all faculty researchers, research staff, student researchers, faculty advisors, visitors or any other individuals who conduct research projects with human subjects or their identifiable data. Some examples include individuals who: obtain informed consent; conduct surveys, interviews, or focus groups; collect or analyze subjects’ identifiable data or biological samples; or conduct study procedures that contribute to the research in a substantive way. Prior to initiating research involving human subjects, researchers must complete an on-line tutorial and related exams via the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program. On a case-by-case basis, the Tufts SBER IRB (https://viceprovost.tufts.edu/sberirb/research-training-requirements/citi/) may accept the completion of comparable education for community research partners or researchers employed by other institutions. If an individual has previously completed a module found in the Basic Course, regardless of when the module was completed, this module will be applied toward initial certification with the new CITI requirements. Please Note: IRB Training and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) Training are not interchangeable. RCR training does not fulfill the IRB education requirements. BIOMEDICAL RESEARCHERS USER GROUP: BMN, MNSP, and NDS students should plan on completing the Biomedical Researchers user group for their CITI Training Certification. All researchers will complete the CITI “Basic Education Course” for their user group. For Biomedical Researchers, this consists of 16 modules. You will need to create a CITI account and register to complete the CITI Training Course modules. Upon log-in, select the “Add a Course or Update Learner Group” under Tufts University/Tufts Medical Center Courses. During registration, choose “Tufts University/Tufts Medical Center” as your Participating Institution. Please list your “@tufts.edu” email address as the preferred email address. Once you have completed all of the Biomedical Researchers modules in the course, you have access to a completion certificate (there will be a PDF cover page and a results page with your score and expiration date (valid for 4 years). The expiration date of an individual’s certification is based on the day the last required module was completed. EMAIL [email protected]: Please email your completed CITI Certification results page (with score and expiration date not the cover page) to Friedman’s Registrar ([email protected]) so your academic record can be updated in SIS this completed degree requirement and the hardcopy of your Biomedical Researchers CITI Certification completion report is filed in your student file folder.

Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Education Requirements

ATTENTION BMN, MNSP, and NDS STUDENTS:

All BMN, MNSP, and NDS students need to complete their CITI Training Certification which is

required education in the protection of human subjects (ethics or research with human

subjects or data) and is degree requirement. Please plan on completing your CITI Certification

as soon as possible and PRIOR TO THE FIRST DAY OF CLASSES IN YOUR FIRST SEMESTER.

ABOUT THE CITI TRAINING:

The CITI Training Requirement applies to all faculty researchers, research staff, student researchers,

faculty advisors, visitors or any other individuals who conduct research projects with human subjects or

their identifiable data. Some examples include individuals who: obtain informed consent; conduct

surveys, interviews, or focus groups; collect or analyze subjects’ identifiable data or biological samples;

or conduct study procedures that contribute to the research in a substantive way. Prior to initiating

research involving human subjects, researchers must complete an on-line tutorial and related exams via

the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Program. On a case-by-case basis, the Tufts SBER

IRB (https://viceprovost.tufts.edu/sberirb/research-training-requirements/citi/) may accept the

completion of comparable education for community research partners or researchers employed by

other institutions. If an individual has previously completed a module found in the Basic Course,

regardless of when the module was completed, this module will be applied toward initial certification

with the new CITI requirements. Please Note: IRB Training and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR)

Training are not interchangeable. RCR training does not fulfill the IRB education requirements.

BIOMEDICAL RESEARCHERS USER GROUP:

BMN, MNSP, and NDS students should plan on completing the Biomedical Researchers user group for

their CITI Training Certification. All researchers will complete the CITI “Basic Education Course” for their

user group. For Biomedical Researchers, this consists of 16 modules. You will need to create a CITI

account and register to complete the CITI Training Course modules. Upon log-in, select the “Add a

Course or Update Learner Group” under Tufts University/Tufts Medical Center Courses. During

registration, choose “Tufts University/Tufts Medical Center” as your Participating Institution. Please list

your “@tufts.edu” email address as the preferred email address. Once you have completed all of the

Biomedical Researchers modules in the course, you have access to a completion certificate (there will be

a PDF cover page and a results page with your score and expiration date (valid for 4 years). The

expiration date of an individual’s certification is based on the day the last required module was

completed.

EMAIL [email protected]:

Please email your completed CITI Certification results page (with score and expiration date not the

cover page) to Friedman’s Registrar ([email protected]) so your academic record can be

updated in SIS this completed degree requirement and the hardcopy of your Biomedical Researchers

CITI Certification completion report is filed in your student file folder.
