Around the world, a growing number of mining & minerals companies are looking outside their organizations to establish a collaborative partnership based on automation best practices that will reduce risk, improve plant process stability and maximize their performance potential.

A collaborative approach to automation, based on a shared commitment to operational excellence by the technology/service provider and end-user, serves as a solid foundation for digital transformation.

Entering into a long-term alliance with a qualified, “one-stop-shop” automation supplier like Honeywell can help customers achieve greater process efficiency through high automation levels. Typical activities include:

- Deploying advanced software to optimize plant processes, evaluate performance and track asset health

- Upgrading automation systems through migration and installation of a modern, reliable process control system

- Utilizing advanced simulation technology with a “digital twin” to train operators and technicians and improve their overall effectiveness

- Implementing an intuitive dashboard for real-time condition monitoring of plant asset health and performance

- Centralizing remote support and operations to encompass distributed control, advanced process control and analytics

- Providing secure network access to enable remote service/configuration, on-demand analysis and diagnostics, and remote operations support

WORKING TOGETHER FOR DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

HOW CAN YOU MEET TODAY’S MINING INDUSTRY CHALLENGES?In an era of price volatility, resource scarcity and skilled labor shortages, mining operations seek new levels of competitiveness through digital transformation. They must find ways to:

- Control capital and operational costs

- Heighten production efficiency

- Enhance plant, personnel and environmental safety

- Improve asset reliability

- Minimize maintenance requirements

- Achieve better process performance

WHAT IS A COLLABORATIVE AUTOMATION PARTNERSHIP?

RELY ON EXPERT SUPPORT AND SERVICEHoneywell builds a cohesive deployment team combining expert local and global resources to deliver technology and service solutions within its collaborative automation programs. Designated “agents of change” lead this team, assembling all necessary local staff members, contractors and other third-party assets, and overseeing execution over the life of the program.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF NEW OPPORTUNITIESLeading mining industry firms have established collaborative automation partnerships with Honeywell to drive business success. With this approach, mine operators and mineral processors can:

- Harness valuable plant data

- Anticipate areas of potential growth

- Work together better across the enterprise

- Manage assets remotely

- Make the best decisions

- Next-generation DCS platform: Honeywell provides its Experion® Process Knowledge System (PKS) to enable superior robustness, improved operator effectiveness, low installed cost and ease of use. Customers can utilize Honeywell’s effective migration toolkits and experience to ensure risk-free upgrades to its advanced technology. Implementation of Experion PKS is low risk and highly flexible with the LEAP™ solution of cloud engineering, virtual servers, and Universal I/O.

- Robust advanced control applications: Advanced control technology is the major benefit driver for digital transformation initiatives, and can be applied to mineral processing plants to enhance production, increase ore recovery, lower costs, etc. Honeywell is the leading supplier of multivariable predictive control (MPC) for mining and minerals processors, with approximately 500 applications installed worldwide. Universal, flexible and easily implemented, this technology can drive operational excellence and have a significant impact on the bottom line.

- Effective operator training systems: Even in the best-run mineral processing plants, there’s room for further optimization through improved competency management. Honeywell’s advanced operator training simulator (OTS) systems employ a “digital twin” to represent various physical assets and the processes that take place within them. The digital twin replicates

equipment/device behavior and contains built-in process models for what’s connected to the equipment. Simulations show how equipment performs under varying conditions to assist with operator training.

- Integrated MES solution: It’s important in digital transformation to track improvements resulting from the program, as well as provide the information to make better and timely decisions about plant operations. Honeywell provides MES solutions to individual sites and corporate-wide for integrating a host of processes, workflows and operational systems. These solutions utilize dashboards and reports for ongoing tracking of digitization initiatives, as well as real-time visibility into operations. Their use results in better and timelier decision-making that can improve throughput and recovery, reduce costs, stabilize quality, and minimize unplanned downtime.

- Leading-edge remote technologies: Increasingly, companies in harsh or remote areas are implementing remote technologies to provide remote control room operations, centralized support and real-time asset monitoring for multiple sites. A remote operations center plays a vital role in operating the mine and plant. It also helps in supporting installed automation systems and technologies, and can assist with development, deployment design and testing, and training.

The advantages of collaborative automation partnerships tailored to individual companies and the needs of different operating sites have been demonstrated throughout the global mining and minerals sector.

MINING COMPANY INCREASES PRODUCTION WITH TECHNOLOGY UPGRADESIn Latin America, a major copper mining enterprise partnered with Honeywell to modernize its base-level automation with an integrated platform connecting APC, DCS, remote support and remote operations solutions. Providing an immediate ROI to help pay for ongoing upgrades, the multi-year program replaced ineffective control system assets and enabled a two percent increase in production through the use of advanced automation.

For this customer, Honeywell provides remote monitoring of APC at different operating sites and then reports on KPIs to ensure good performance. The copper mining company relies on Honeywell’s expertise to track and analyze how well APC is running across its facilities to ensure they are producing at maximum outputs.

It is noteworthy that in-house personnel have shown enthusiastic support for the implementation of APC technology utilizing process knowledge from control

room operators and engineers. As evidence, they use it more than 90 percent of the time. There is no longer a need to run processes in manual mode in order to maintain full control.

MINERALS PROCESSOR PREPARES FOR THE FUTURE WITH REMOTE OPERATIONSA large minerals processor, operating in Australia, was able to optimize its alumina production operations and improve raw material efficiencies across its refining business with a strategic automation program. This initiative, incorporating APC, DCS, remote support and remote operations solutions, helped the company replace its legacy control systems by implementing a wide range of self-funding automation applications. It improved plant support through centralized monitoring of the system so in-house personnel could analyze and rectify the control performance of each refinery from a single center, thus leveraging scarce expert resources.

Rapid technology deployment by a dedicated implementation team at the various refining locations minimized costs, improved quality and avoided plant interruption.

HOW DOES HONEYWELL’S APPROACH BENEFIT YOUR BUSINESS?Thanks to both remote operation and advanced automation technologies, fewer people can now manage more mining and mineral processing facilities. These solutions are a good way to consolidate end-to-end operational visibility and optimize the mining value chain.

1-5 % throughput increases, typically worth $5M per year

Up to 4% recovery (yield) increases, typically worth $5M per year

Up to 1.5% productivity and efficiency improvements, typically worth $1.5M per year

Up to $500k maintenance cost reductions per site

Improvements to your bottom line: Typically achieved results through a collaborative automation partnership
