Masters of Arts in PhilosophyBrief, General Description of the Program:The Master of Arts degree in Philosophy offers students the opportunity to acquire a general knowledge of the core areas of analytic and Continental philosophy, to develop ethical reasoning, critical thinking, and research skills, and to prepare and increase competitive ability for admission and success in Ph.D. or J.D. programs.
Unique Aspects of the Program: Develop a solid foundation of knowledge in both the analytic and
Continental traditions of philosophy. Experience curricular flexibility across a wide range of traditional
philosophy sub-disciplines. Choose between a thesis or a non-thesis (internship) capstone
experience. Engage with world-renowned philosophers at UTSA’s annual
Brackenridge Philosophy Symposia. Be mentored by award-winning faculty, which placed students into top
law schools and philosophy programs.
Admission Requirements:Applicants for admission to the MA program must satisfy all University-wide graduate admission requirements. Complete applications will include the Graduate School Application form, official academic transcripts, a statement of purpose (500–750 word essay that should speak to one’s personal and professional goals in studying philosophy at the MA level), and two letters of recommendation. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores must also be submitted to the Graduate School. These scores will be considered only as one element in the evaluation of applicants. Applicants are also strongly encouraged, but not required, to submit an 8-15 page writing sample. Non-degree-seeking (special) graduate students need to submit GRE scores but may be limited in the courses they are permitted to take. Applications will not be reviewed until complete.
Application deadlines: Fall enrollment - For domestic applicants: priority deadline of March
15, final deadline of June 15; for international applicants: March 1 deadline.
Spring enrollment - For domestic applicants: priority deadline of August 15, final deadline of October 15; for international applicants: September 15 deadline.
Degree Requirements:Students may pursue two different tracks: a thesis track and a non-thesis track. The thesis track requires a minimum of 30 semester credit hours to receive a degree, 6 credits of which are devoted to writing and defending a
thesis. The internship track requires a minimum of 33 semester credit hours to receive a degree, 6 credits of which are devoted to fulfilling an internship.
Department of Philosophy Faculty:The philosophy department faculty are distinguished teachers and scholars who publish regularly in leading presses and journals, and present at prominent local, national, and international conferences. Faculty have received the President’s Distinguished Achievement Awards for Research and Teaching Excellence, NEH Awards, as well as various other research grants and awards. The faculty mentor students closely, and have placed students at top law schools and philosophy programs.
