Mrs. Cerise Campbell – Administrative Secretary

Dear Families of Peter Greer –

Welcome to the month of May and spring! It is

such a good feeling to have longer days, birds

chirping in the trees and the warmth of the

sunshine around us. The playground is being well

used again, and children are enjoying being outside

much more. At this time of the year we do ask

everyone to be aware that dogs are not allowed on

school premises and gentle reminders to neighbours

about such would be greatly appreciated. We want

to keep our grounds clean and healthy for our

students.

Congratulations to Brooklyn, Carolyn, Declan, and

Lindsay who represented Peter Greer at the “Battle

of the Books” finals at Rutland Elementary School,

April 24th. Twenty-two schools entered the

competition and these students brought home

“gold” to Peter Greer!

Congratulations to the “Social Justice Group” who

have been fulfilling their commitment to “serve

others” this year. This year they have sponsored:

! Halloween for Hunger (supporting

the local Food Bank)

! Winter Clothing Drive (free clothing

to local families)

! Movie fundraisers (support for new

food bank building)

Look for more details about an upcoming garage

sale – a time to “clean out” items you do not want as

well as acquire those “gems” others have donated!

Family Fun Night: PAC is sponsoring a great

evening of fun for families on June 6th from 5:30 to

7:30. Volunteers are needed for various stations

and times. If you are able to help out, please call

the school and leave your name. Tickets are $.50 each or $20.00 for a wristband of endless play (until 7:30 that is!).

As well, volunteers will be needed for the

Intermediate Track and Field Meet at the Apple

Bowl on May 23rd. Please call the school if you are

available to help.

Once again, if you are planning on moving to another

area and your child will not be attending Peter

Greer Elementary, please let Mrs. Campbell know.

This helps us greatly with our staffing process.

We are looking forward to many exciting activities

and events in our last two months of school and we

do hope that you are able to join us for some of

them.

Sincere thanks to you as families who have done so

much for the children in our school.

Author/Illustrator Visit

The library had the pleasure of hosting an

author/illustrator visit by Mrs. Barbara Reid

(Picture A Tree, Subway Mouse, Perfect Snow).

All students in Grades 1 – 3 heard about Mrs.

Reid's experience as an author and illustrator!

Did You Know…?

…Mrs. Valiant’s kindies are learning all about plants?

…Mrs. White’s kindergarten class is growing pumpkin and bean plants for science? We are patiently waiting to see the sprouts!!

…Mme Dixon's class will starting our unit on recycling? We started off by learning about Earth day, and the ways that we can help protect our Earth. We will also be learning about how we can reuse, reduce and recycle various everyday materials.

…Mme DeWolf's class is learning about the life cycle of a chicken? We are incubating eggs in our classroom to watch them grow and eventually hatch. It will be very exciting! We are also beginning to measure things and write about the Earth.

…Mrs. Walker 's class is hosting a batch of chicken eggs? They are arriving April 23rd and will hatch in May.

…Mme Horan's class has been learning about animals and their life cycles? They have also begun exploring various aspects of music.

…Mme Gagliano, Mrs. Caillaud and Ms. Ehman’s classes are going to the O’Keefe Ranch in May? Thestudents will be visiting the O’Keefe mansion, museum, cemetery and learning how to be old-fashioned students in a pioneer school.

…Ms. Martin’s class has been reading and writing up a storm? We wrote fabulous Easter stories! We are also learning about story structure. (character, setting, problem, solution)

…Ms. Ehman and Mrs. Scott’s classes made a video to teach others about caring for the earth? They also performed a song and dance for the school assembly.

…Ms. Webb's class finished a descriptive Easter story last week? The kids are working hard to add action words and details to their writing. They have also been listening to "Wump World" by Bill Peete and are using their thinking skills to compare the world before and after the 'Pollutians' landed. Our class is also working on recognizing the difference between safe and harmful choices and making positive decisions.

...Ms. Culham's class is learning about natural resources and the impact harvesting them has on our environment?

…Ms. French’s class has had Miss Rowland in our class for the last month? We're sad to see her go!

…Ms. Zimmermann’s class would like to thank Mrs. Kees for being a part of our classroom for the month of April. Check out their structures in the foyer!!

…Ms. Sarbit's PE classes danced their way to spring break!? They are now learning some new indoor and outdoor games while looking forward to track and field which will be starting soon!!!

…Mrs. deHoog’s class is heading to the Vernon Science Centre with Ms. Zimmermann’s class to finish our unit on electricity. It will be shocking in more ways than one!

…Mme Currie's class has been exploring the concept of symbolism and have been writing speeches about Canadian symbols? Certain students even presented atthe KSS Night Owl theatre in the French Immersion Oral Language Showcase!

…Mrs. Boal's Grade 3/4 Battle of the Books team earned FIRST place at the Zone Battle? Congratulations to Brooklyn, Lindsay, and Carolyn who will be representing PGE at the District Battle!

PAC LETTER

Hello PAC’s of School District 23,

It is already the end of April and the Canadian

Student Leadership Conference (CSLC)

planning is well underway. Amazing events and

activities, keynote speakers, breakout sessions,

Ted-X, and more are all being confirmed. These

opportunities will not only benefit the 600+ national

students and the 250+ local registered students

but CSLC will also reach every elementary school.

Groups of CSLC delegates will visit each

elementary school in the end of September where

they aim to ignite a passion for leadership with

SD23 elementary students. Middle and high

school students not attending the conference will

be invited to various CSLC activities and will also

benefit from the presenters that are here for the

conference who have also been scheduled to

present at schools. Leaving a legacy of leadership

within the host community is a goal of all CSLC

conferences and we are determined to do so.

Soon we will be contacting our parent groups to

round up volunteers for the conference as well to

find host families for the 650 visiting Canadian

students. Please visit our website www.cslc2014.ca

if you would like further information on volunteering

or billeting. If you have any questions at all please

do not hesitate to ask as I am happy to help in any

way I can.
