And just like that, we are into October…
Although we had a very different start to our school year, our reentry went smoothly. Our students and staff
are to be commended for their diligence in following all the new protocols in place to keep everyone safe.
I would like to welcome Mr. Jesse Baker to our staff. Mr. Baker is teaching the Automotive course to grade
7 and 8 students. This course has replaced the Shop and Home Ec courses this year. I am excited to see what
skills the students will learn with Mr. Baker. He has some wonderful ideas.
A warm welcome also to Mme Jeannette Fayant who is our school’s Monitrice de langue française. This is
Mme Jeannette’s second year in this position. Under the supervision of a teacher, her role is to encourage
students to improve their knowledge of the French language and its associated cultures and to use the lan-
guage on a daily basis.
Our school goals this year focus on literacy, numeracy, mental health and Education for Sustainable Devel-
opment (ESD). We are working towards improving English reading skills, Math number sense and number
skills, mental health and maintaining our current practices when it comes to ESD. For more detailed infor-
mation on our school goals, please refer to the finalized school plan which will be posted on our school
website by mid October. (http://www.ecolelaurier.ca/school-plan.html)
Our prématernelle program this year is three days a week, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It is open
to students who will be entering Kindergarten next September. We always welcome new students so please
spread the word about this free program. If you require more information, please contact me.
Unfortunately this year, we cannot hold our annual Thanksgiving Potluck Supper. That will not stop us from
reflecting on everything for which we are grateful. We are so very blessed here at École Laurier. I am
thankful for my wonderful staff, my enthusiastic students, and their supportive families.
In an effort to remain sustainable, our school newsletters are sent to you via email. You can always access
them on our school website which is updated regularly with school events.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me or schedule an appointment.

Regulations state that we must have 10 fire drills & 2
lockdown drills per year. Students are required to wear
appropriate foot- wear (NON MARKING SOLES) at
school at all times for their safety as well as for various
drills that are held during the year. An emergency may
arise at any time, summer or winter, and we must be
prepared to evacuate. Physical distancing guidelines
will be followed during all drills. In a real emergency
situation, students have been taught to exit the
school as quickly as possible and that physical
distancing is not needed.
TRSD has suspended
the vision and hearing
testing this year due to
the COVID19
pandemic. Screening
will resume next year.
Hello, my name is Jeannette Fayant and this is my second year as the French
language assistant at École Laurier. I have resided in the area most of my life
and I myself was once a student at École Laurier as well. During my leisure
time I enjoy gardening, camping and spending time with my family.
Throughout the last couple weeks, I’ve really enjoyed working with all the
students and staff. A French language assistant plays the role of ambassador
of their language and culture. Carrying out activities that provide a better
understanding of the cultural and oral aspect of the French language.
Also helping students improve their language skills. I’m so happy to be
working again in this warm and welcoming school!
Bonjour,
Music/Band
Hello everyone,
I am sure you have all heard that music and band will look different this year. We are not playing any
horn instruments. We also cannot sing at this point.
Kindergarten and grade 1 students are learning names of instruments, learning rhythms and having fun
learning a few dances.
Grade 2 and 3 students are learning chords on the ukulele, and reviewing music rhythms.
Grade 4-8 students have been learning the guitar. We are focusing on the right hand positions and using
the proper fingerings on the guitar. The grade 7 and 8 students are learning a few chords per class.
I hope you all have a great October! Bye for now, Ms. Tait.
Nouvelles de la classe M/1 This month was a very busy one in the K/1 classroom. We had a
lot of new rules and procedures to learn and for the most part, the
students have done very well. They are doing great with social
distancing and hand sanitizing.
We have spent the month learning all about school and school
vocabulary, patterning in Math, the alphabet and spending time
outside learning about nature. We also worked very hard on our
fine motor skills and printing.
Next month’s themes will be Fall and Halloween.
A few reminders: Please sign
your child’s agenda daily.
There are no microwaves to
reheat lunches.
Please send a water bottle
with your child.
Les SUPER-HÉROS de 2e et 3e année avec Mme VanHumbeck
We have had a great start to our school year in the grade 2 and 3 classroom. We work
together to create a respectful learning environment where everyone is appreciated, has
fun and can learn. We are adjusting well to the new routines.
In Français, we reviewed the “ou” and “on” sound. We learned about different punctuation
marks and we read and write daily. We have started our sight word program and during
the first week of October, we will begin our home reading program and dictée. We work
hard every day to improve our French oral communication skills. We are fortunate to have
Mme Jeannette, our French language assistant, back with us again this year to help us
develop these skills.
Math has been fun too! We worked on repeating patterns as well as increasing and
decreasing patterns. We are reviewing addition and subtraction facts.
In Science de la Nature, we are learning about structures; man-made and those in nature.
We conducted some experiments to compare the strength of common materials.

That there is a Facebook page called École
Laurier Parents & Staff Page.
It is a closed group whose members are parents of students attending our school as well as
École Laurier staff. As a closed group, only members can view the posts and only members will
see if you try to share the posts.
It is a great way to see all the positive things happening at École Laurier. We share lots of
information and pictures about daily school activities on this page.
Keep in touch with what your child is doing at school.
If you are on Facebook, send us a request to join. All parents welcome!
Please be diligent about checking your child’s hair frequently
for lice. Your child’s teacher thanks you!
If you should have concerns or need any assistance in this
regard, please contact the Public Health Office.
This month in the grade 4/5/6 classroom we have been getting back into school work
and routines. The grade 4/5/6s are excited to start a new school year. This year is a bit different
than other years. Our classroom is now a three grade split class. With physical distancing and
proper sanitizing measures in place it has been a big change for the students and myself in the
classroom.
In French and ELA class, the students have been spending a good portion of their time
having discussions and completing writing activities about friendships. They have also been
practicing how to conjugate verbs in the present tense in French class. During math, they have
been working with natural numbers; estimating, adding, and subtracting. Phys. Ed classes have
been all outdoors due to having more space for physical distancing. Fortunately, we have been
having nice weather. The grade 4/5/6s have been playing and practicing skills related to soccer
and utilizing some classes for fitness. They are enjoying our big Phys Ed class of grade 4-8. In
science, they have been learning about living things. They have learned different ways to
classify objects and living things. In social studies, the students are exploring the history of the
Red River colony, loyalists, and the war of 1812. We are gearing up for a great year!
I hope the students are enjoying the new school year as much as I am. I am excited to
see what October has in store for the grade 4/5/6 class.

Bonjour mes Amis!
Hello again, I am happy to return once again to École
Laurier. It has only been a couple of years since I was last here
and I am happy to say it feels great to be back. Laurier school
and community mean a lot to me and will forever have a place
in my heart. All the students, parents, and staff members are
so friendly and supportive making it fortunate for me to teach
in such an amazing school. The staff members have been busy
working very hard to prepare for the safe return to school for
students. Each staff member is very amazing and should be
applauded for their hard work and dedication. Furthermore, I
would also like to commend our schools amazing principal
Christine VanHumbeck and custodian Joe Dillon. I see how hard
these two are working during the pandemic to make sure all the students and staff members
are safe, and we all appreciate these efforts.
For those of you that don’t know me well, my name is Jason Nadeau and this year I am
fortunate to teach grade 7 & 8 English Language Arts in École Laurier. To compliment this role, I
am still working at the Turtle River School Division office as the Division’s Resource, Literacy,
and Numeracy Consultant along with a few other hats. Looking back at these amazing
adventures it is hard to believe that this will mark my 21st year teaching. Over the years I have
had the pleasure of working in every grade from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Additionally, I have
worked in school resource and school administration before working in senior administration at
the Division office.
When I am not in the classroom teaching, I enjoy volunteering and giving back in my
community, traveling, or spending time with my family. That is what I can be found doing every
night if I am not working. I feel it is important to help others in any way that you can. The
picture is from a year ago, pre-pandemic, when my family and I went on a trip to Hawaii.
Travelling is my favourite hobby that I enjoy doing as it allows me to spend quality time with my
family. In Hawaii we were fortunate to do a couple tours that allowed us to learn about the
culture and traditions in Hawaii as well as climb a dormant volcano! I always seem to find ways
that that these experiences can help support me as an educator. It makes you appreciate what
you have and what is important. I look forward to teaching in École Laurier this year and wish
everyone a successful year!
Sincerely, Mr. Nadeau
News from Grade 7 & 8 ELA
The students in Grade 7 & 8 ELA have been having fun learning
English Language Arts and realizing how much it complements their
French language. This year will see students do a lot of writing and
reading in various forms. We have been getting to know each other
well and found out that we are split between dog and cat lovers.
Students are having a blast writing about animals and fictitious
characters. This month students have been busy working on a unit on
The Writing Process. During the month of September, grade 7 & 8
students they have been engaged in studying words
and different forms of writing.
Some of the writing students are
doing varied from a simple
journal to writing a paragraph.
Students have also been looking at various parts of
grammar; specifically, parts of speech in order to support their
continued development in writing. Students were able to create
comics using alliterations that allowed them to incorporate some of
their own creativity into their writing. In October, students will be
starting a novel study as well as a new unit in writing. Students are
being introduced to different tools they will be utilizing this year such
as “Reading A to Z”, Microsoft Teams, and Office 365. These tools are
Internet-based and allows students to access them on a computer from
anywhere. Technology is great and fun to use (most of the time, when
it works), but students are finding out why it is important to be
competent in writing and completing their work on paper before they
digitize it.

We had a great September! It was so nice to welcome all of our students back to
school. This month we have been getting used to school routines again. In French,
students have been learning to use Office 365 and Teams. We will be using these
programs in our French, Social Science and Science classes. Students have been
refreshing their memories on common verb tenses and important French grammar
rules. In math, both grade 7 and 8 students have completed sections of the MRLC
(Manitoba Rural Learning Consortium) boot camp. Recently students have been
learning (reviewing) how to add and subtract them positive/negative integers and.
Grade 8 students will be expanding that knowledge by learning how to multiply and
divide them. We will all be moving onto Fractions in October. In social studies
students have been learning about Confederation and the early days of our great
nation. We will soon be switching from social studies to science. In science,
students will be learning about plant and animal cells and cell systems within the
body. Students will begin dictée this week. This week and next
are commonly misspelled words from our class, and then they
will be moving onto advancing their vocabulary.
Dictée will be every day 4.
2/3 Sciences Humaines
This month in social studies we
