If your house caught on fire, what would you grab? Most people wouldnt go for the flat screen, their couch, or the Blu Ray Player. In a momentlike that, full of panic, people decide what is really important. They grab pictures, heirlooms, mementos from loved ones whove passed. No onecares about the DVD collection at that point; they want to preserve their familys treasures, the memories. They grab the things that make theirhouse a home. A place is only as good as the people youre with and Christian Morganstern understood that when he said, Home is not whereyou live, but where they understand you, because home is where my family is.

A house is not a home at all. A house is inanimate, comprised of wood and nails. Its just a shelter. A home is altogether something different.Home evokes emotion. Its somewhere where there is complete and utter abandon of pretenses. Its the place without fear, where no one can bean outsider. People are what make the wood and nails mean something to a person.

I have lived in my house for six years and built a life here with my family of six. This summer my family is moving across the state, leaving ev-erything we know, for a place we never intended to go. Moving is always an emotional experience. Leaving everything you know to go to a placewhere you have to regain your footing is nerve wracking, an immense leap of faith. Next year will be my senior year so, of course, at first I wasnot thrilled at the idea of leaving. However, after much reflection, I realized it didnt matter where I went. Really and truly I resigned myself to thesituation, welcoming the change and knowing that although I will be leaving behind best friends and a community I know so well, my family willbenefit from this more than I can imagine. I realized its not about me, its about the people who make my house a home. Because my home is aplace where I am loved without condition, where I can be myself without fear of retribution, where everyone is equally and uniquely important.Leaving my house is acceptable to me because I get to stay with the people who have shaped me, made me who I am today. The ones I crawledin bed with as a child, the people who have endless patience when it comes to elementary science fairs, and the ones who love me enough to cor-rect me when Im wrong. Wherever they are is home, because its where I feel safe, where I feel accepted regardless of the worlds opinion of me.

Home means unity because my family is unbreakable. Bound by shared memories, tough times, and just living life together, we are a web, woundtightly. Moving will undoubtedly be difficult for my family, but I take comfort in knowing that wherever they are, I am home.
