The Jwalamukhi temple, is an importantShakti Peeth. This is where Sati’s tongue issaid to have fallen. Legend says that it wasspotted by a young shepherd, when it burstinto flames. Hence the nameJwala, which means flames. When thereigning Raja came to know, he had atemple built. This is the best-known templededicated toJwala Devi, in India.
Jwala Ji Temple is considered to be asancient as the Vaishno Devi Temple inJammu. It gets mentioned in many ancientscriptures. The temple is located on ahillside. Inside, an eternal flame burns froma copper pipe, which is believed torepresent the nine form of Goddess Durga.Many have tried to squelch the flame buthave been unsuccessful.
Emperor Akbar had donated a goldumbrella as a canopy over the flame.Punjab’s Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who always
sought the devi’s blessing before going intobattle, had the golden dome installed in1815 and the silver door in 1837. The templehosts an annual fair during the months ofJuly-August.
2 Ambika Devi Temple

Visit this temple for a good dose of history,folklore and outstanding architecture. Amust visit for photographers as well, thetemple is home to a rock cut idol of GoddessAmbika. She was supposedly the main deityof the family of Kangra kings. Going by thefolklore, the first king of the clan was bornfrom a sweat drop of the goddess, as shetired of fighting a demon. The idol staysintact even now, though some parts of thefort were destroyed in an earthquake andfrom many attacks that it saw from theBritish, Muhammad Ghajini and other Indiankings.
There's an air of fascinating surreal charmthat might be owing to its location, as itoverlooks the snow laden Dhauladharmountain range. Atheist or believers in God,you can take your pick as per your whims,but this place counts as a must visit inKangra.
3 Brijeshwari Temple

Brijeshwari Temple, also known asVajreshwari Temple, is said to have beenbuilt over the charred breasts of Sati. One ofthe Sati-Peeths in the country, the temple isknown for its legendary wealth. Thisspectacular temple was invaded by manytimes by several extremists and thus, in theintervening years the temple was rebuilt andrenovated several times.
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Parvatior Brajeshwari, who is worshipped here inthe form of a Pinid. According to legends, in
ancient times the goddess had used butterto heal the wound she suffered during herbattle with the demon Mahishasur. So as atradition, during the festival of Lohri thetemple is decorated with a layer ofbutter.
4 Kangra Fort

Nagarkot, or Kot Kangra, or Kangra Fort, asit was called, was recorded in history in 1009CE when Mahmud of Ghazni attacked it. Thefort belonged to the Katoch kings of Kangra,the remains of whose palaces can be seentoday at the very top of the ridge. Attackedover a thousand years ago by Ghazni, theTughlaks, Akbar and Jahangir, the Gurkhasand Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the fort wasreduced to its present state of ruin by amore recent but older force—an earthquakein 1905. This calamity killed over 1,300people in Kangra alone and ruined the town,fort and temples of the valley.The fort, also

known as the Nagar Kot, is constructed onthe confluence of the two rivers, Bangangaand Manjhi. Located at a distance of 27 kmfrom Palampur, this fort became historicalwhen Mahmud of Ghazni attacked theKangra city, in the year 1909. An importantand the only unconquered fort in the region,it is famous for the carvings and miniaturepaintings, which have been restored andpreserved at the Kangra museum. Apartfrom this, the fort also consists of variousgates, shrines and a number of old palaces.An important feature inside the fort is alsothe presence of numerous Jain andBrahmanical temples, which date back tothe 9th century CE. The fort ever since wasextremely famous for the riches itharboured inside its premises, whichprompted Mahmud of Ghazni to invade it inthe first place. The entrance to the fort isguarded by wooden planks built on the baseof an arch constructed with sandstones. Amoat separates the fort from the outsideworld.
