COIN GRADING DEFINITIONSPlease note that these are subjective and are the opinion of the cataloguer but buyers must satisfy themselves as to condition

UNC – Uncirculated. A coin in ‘as new’ condition, as issued by the Mint, retaining full lustre but, owing to modern massproduction methods, of manufacture and storage, not necessarily perfect.

G – Good (prior to another grade) denotes a coin which is slightly better than expected for that grade.

EF – Extremely Fine. A coin that exhibits very little sign of circulation, with only minimal marks or faint wear, which areonly evident upon very close scrutiny.

VF – Very Fine. A coin that exhibits some wear to the raised surfaces of the design, but has had only limited circulation.

F – Fine. A coin that exhibits considerable wear to the raised surfaces of the design, but still exhibits the maindistinguishing features.

385An E.R. II Member of the Most Excellent Orderof the British Empire (M.B.E.) frosted silver breastbadge with citation, naming Walter Reginald FarrEsquire.

Walter “Snowy” Farr (1919-2007)Walter “Snowy” Farr was born in Longstanton in1919. He worked for Cambridgeshire CityCouncil as a road sweeper for most of his life, but it was his unconventional fundraising activitiesafter retiring which brought him to the publics, and ultimately The Queen’s attention.

Snowy decided to spend his retirement raisingmuch needed funds for several charities for theblind. And he did it in style. Busking and collectingaround Petty Curry in Cambridge city centre.Snowy was often seen in antique military uniformor suit tails, along with a stripped top hat. He wasregularly accompanied by a menagerie of animalsto include his cat, several white mice, dogs, guineapigs, cockerels and a goat. The cat would sit uponSnowy’s top hat while the mice ran around itsbrim.

Unsurprisingly, Snowy managed to raise manythousands of pounds over the years. Hereportedly raised over £62,000 for theCambridgeshire Society for the Blind and PartiallySighted, over £46,000 for Guide Dogs for theBlind and over £25,000 for Cam Sight amongstmany other charities.

Despite being extremely well known by visitorsto Cambridge and interviewed by Dave Allen in1974, Snowy’s efforts weren’t officially recogniseduntil 1995 when he received his M.B.E.

Snowy Farr died on 8th March 2007, aged 88.Weyman’s Funeral Services of Cambridge fundedthe funeral as Snowy had given all his money tocharity.

Shortly afterwards there was public call for afitting memorial to this lovable eccentric. TheSnowy Farr memorial artwork was unveiledoutside Cambridge’s Guildhall in 2012. Designedby Gary Webb, the sculpture is suitably eye-catching.

In memory of Snowy’s tireless work, Lacy Scott &Knight will donate all commission fees and buyerspremium from the sale of this lot to Guide Dogs forthe Blind.£100 - 150
