BREATHTAKING BEAUTY.This coin is the perfect gift for butterfly and nature lovers, even art aficionados who will be captivated by the stunning artistry of the butterfly’s wings. The combination of iridescent blue, dark purple-black and light blue-white markings is utterly captivating.

But all this beauty has a purpose. The Red-spotted Purple looks a lot like the poisonous Pipevine Swallowtail; its imitation of the Pipevine’s toxic wings is a clever evolutionary trick to keep predators at bay.

Most of Canada’s population of Red-spotted Purples (Limenitis arthemis astyanax) is concentrated in southern Ontario. This butterfly is most commonly found on the outskirts of wooded areas, in open meadows, forest clearings and on gravel roads sunning its wings. Adults fly throughout the summer from June to mid-September, and will seek out plum and oak trees in order to lay their eggs on the leaves.

SUPERSTAR BLOOMS. Canada’s gardens are filled with a tremendous variety of flowers, but a few of them remain all-time favourites that always capture more admiring gazes than all the others. One is the tulip, and its big, bold dash of springtime colour is so popular that Ottawa has become “The Tulip Capital of North America.”

It all began during the Second World War when Canada provided safe haven for the Dutch royal family. After the war, they began sending annual gifts of tulip bulbs. Today, Ottawa blooms with millions of tulips every year, while Canadians have planted countless more in their gardens.

This spectacular tulip coin has a niobium core that has been individually oxidized for a one-of-a-kind patina. It delivers a unique background to showcase the single tulip that has been selectively coloured—a tribute to one of Canada’s superstar blooms.

5TH COIN IN THE SERIES.

BEAUTIFULLY ENHANCED WITH SPARKLING SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS®

A TRILOGY OF DELIGHTS. Three “dewdrops” glitter from the beautiful red trillium on this coin. Its name comes from the Greek word tris which means “thrice,” and describes the flower’s three petals, three sepals and three leaves.

The petals are a rich, deep red and form one of nature’s most distinctive blooms that is breathtaking and unforgettable in its simplicity. Trillium erectum is native to northeastern North America, and was once common throughout the deciduous forests of Ontario, Québec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, but overpicking and development have made it increasingly rare.

In spring, each plant produces a single flower, and picking it can be fatal, or hinder the plant’s ability to bloom for several years. The red trillium is a slow-growing plant that can live for 30 years, but may take as many as 15 to bloom; this stunning coin delivers a crystal-enhanced flower to enthral admirers for generations to come.

BUILDING THE WAR EFFORT.Right from its onset, the Second World War ushered in a new era for Canadians.

When Canada declared war on September 11, 1939, it did so as an independent nation, not as a colony automatically drawn into the conflict by Britain. The romanticized patriotism that had greeted the First World War was gone, replaced by a collective memory of the heavy losses that had been suffered. The Great Depression had left Canada’s military undermanned and underequipped, and idle factories and a diminished workforce now faced an urgent demand for airplanes, ships, vehicles, guns and munitions.

Canada’s women responded, and soon represented 25 percent of wartime workers. By 1944, 439,000 women were in the service sectors, 373,000 in manufacturing, including 261,000 in munitions alone.

Women helped build the Allied war effort, they turned their nation into an economic power, and forever transformed their role in society—and at war.

3RD COIN IN THE SERIES.

CHERISH A LION’S LEGACY.The King of the Jungle has also been the King of Symbols since ancient times. A figure of protection, military might, royalty and supernatural power, the lion was a potent heraldic element for coats of arms, emblems, and the currency of hundreds of nations.

Canada was no exception. In 1904, the lion vignette featured on this coin became the central subject for the ten-dollar note issued by the Northern Crown Bank (purchased by the Royal Bank of Canada in 1918), as well as stock shares sold by the Dominion grocery store chain in the 1930s.

Now, Royal Canadian Mint engravers have reproduced this exquisite line engraving to create an exceptional coin that captures the distinctive curve of every muscle and strand of fur, the striking shading of the lion and its mountain setting, as well as the elegant scrollwork and denomination typical of early 20th century bank notes.

A STUNNING REPRODUCTION OF AN EARLY CANADIAN BANK NOTE FEATURING ONE OF HISTORY’S MOST POWERFUL SYMBOLS.

FIND YOUR FORTUNE.What if you heard whispers of rivers flowing with gold? Would you rush into the wilderness to make your fortune; leave the security of civilization for untamed forests and perilous mountain trails?

After purchasing your mining supplies and strapping 32 kg of gear to your back, you would join thousands of others and hike for hundreds of kilometres, never quite sure when or where your journey would end.

The threat of bears and cougars would be ever-present; the weather unforgiving. Winter would freeze all activity and usher in avalanche season, yet people would push on, driven by their dreams of gold. Tent cities would spring up around promising sites and frenzied panning would begin. And if you were one of the lucky ones to find a nugget, the claims office was only a few days’ race away!

HONESTY TALL AS SABE.An honest person is a giant within their community. People are drawn to their authentic nature, their open and accepting ways. Honest people do not pretend to be something they are not, and the words they speak can be trusted 100 percent.

First Nations communities across Canada share an ancient legend of Kitch-Sabe, a giant who walked among the people to teach this sacred virtue. To be called “honest” is the greatest honour. This lesson is also embodied by the raven as it embraces its own gifts and does not long for the beauty, strength or talents that may have been given to others. But the raven can also be a trickster; and too often, people emulate it in this way. People who are truly honest stand tall in the knowledge of who they are.

Honesty is one of the Seven Sacred Teachings that honour the traditional concepts of respect and sharing that are the cornerstones of Aboriginal life. While variations of these teachings do exist throughout North America, this diversity only enriches them and underscores the universality of their wisdom.

A PRESTIGIOUS COIN CRAFTED IN FINE SILVER AND FINE GOLD.

DISCOVER THE LEGEND OF SPIRIT BEAR. According to First Nations legend, when Raven first created the world, everything was frozen and white. After some time, Raven decided the world needed colour, but as the ice began to melt, people started fighting over the land that appeared.

With time, more and more animals changed colour and the world became more beautiful than ever, but the people kept fighting among themselves. So, Raven decided to remind them where they came from by turning one in every 10 bears white. Raven chose the bear because it knew this humble and wise animal would use its spiritual powers to inspire gratitude and appreciation for all of nature and humanity.

To this day, Spirit Bear still wanders the islands of British Columbia to bring this message to the world. Cherish the legend with the stunning narrative of this pure silver coin.

A WILDERNESS TREASURE CRAFTED IN WORLD-FAMOUS GOLD.With its distinctive antlers and tall, lanky build, the moose has become one of the most popular symbols of Canada—and one of the most impressive sights one can hope to see in the wilderness.

An adult moose stands about two metres tall at the shoulder with males averaging 600 kg. And, with a crown of antlers spanning 1.5 m atop its head, a bull moose is truly imposing—the largest member of the Cervidae family.

Despite its size, the moose is remarkably nimble. It can sprint at speeds up to 50 km/h, swim long distances and hold its breath for 30 seconds as it dives more than 5 metres to the bottom of a lake to feed on the aquatic plants that make up roughly half of its vegetarian diet. Easy-going yet steadfast, the moose embodies the spirit of the land.

SETTING SAIL FOR WAR.During the First World War, the final view that tens of thousands of soldiers had after leaving port in Québec City (Québec) was the soaring cliffs of the Gaspe Peninsula. A similar sight awaited those who departed from Halifax (Nova Scotia); they too would watch Canada’s rugged coastline disappear behind the horizon.

Would they ever see their loved ones again? What trials lay ahead? One can only guess the thoughts that percolated in the soldiers’ minds as they crossed the Atlantic ocean.

Britain had declared war on Germany on August 4, 1914, and by October, the largest convoy Canada had ever seen was on its way. This coin captures the scene that played out on countless ships as they headed to sea. Its design lures the viewer in to experience firsthand a scene that touches the heart as much today as it did 100 years ago.
