Coinage of the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalemin Rhodes and Malta

The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem came into being c. 1070, when a hospice was founded by the Benedictine monks of St. Mary of the Latins of Jerusalem, to care for the increasing number of western pilgrims. The building was located on the site where, according to the tradition, the conception of St. John the Baptist was proclaimed by an angel. The Order was chartered by Pope Paschal II as The Hospitallers of St. John in 1113, at a time when the Order had already taken on a military aspect.

The defeat of the Crusaders at Hattin in 1187 forced the Order to leave Jerusalem to settle north of Tripoli, before settling in Acre 1192. The 13th century saw the Order becoming increasingly military and aristocratic. In 1291, Acre was taken by the Mamluks and the seven only knights who survived the fall of the city fled to Cyprus then under the rule of Henry II of Lusignan, where they settled momentarily. The situation suited neither the Order and their needs of independence, nor the king of Cyprus for whom they represented too powerful a guest. This led, in 1306, to the alliance of the Order with the Genoese adventurer Vignolo de’ Vignoli in the prospect of conquering the disputed island of Rhodes, where they in fact settled in 1309 - the completion of the capture of the island as a whole being effective as of the following year.

Of major significance was the fact that Pope Clement V had given his blessing and confirmed the possession of Rhodes by the Hospitallers by grant, thus preventing Philip IV of France from attempting a repeat of the destruction of the Templars in order to lay his hands on their wealth. In fact, Clement V decreed that all the Templars possessions be turned over to the Hospitallers, a fact which explains how and why the Knights of Rhodes had the means to impose themselves as a major force in the eastern Mediterranean, thus offering useful resistance for several centuries against the expansion of the Ottoman Empire.

MALTA

After the Fall of Rhodes, on the 1st of January 1523, the remaining knights under their ageing Grand Master Philippe Villiers de l’Isle Adam, sailed to Crete and then on to Messina. Following personal negociations between Pope Hadrian VI and the Grand Master, the Hospitallers were eventually given the islands of Malta and Gozo - where they settled as of October 1530.

Although they were not very well-received by the local population, they set about actively fortifying the island’s defences, even though the Grand Master was still harbouring hopes of reconquering Rhodes. By the time of Villiers de l’Isle Adam’s death in 1534, Malta had been established as the permanent home of the Knights and a glorious future awaited, until finally the last, and worst Grand Master, Ferdinand von Hompesch, surrendered the island to Napoleon in June 1798.

THE FAMOUS DURRANT COLLECTIONNB032 S. Leigh Sotheby & Co. Catalogue of the Extensive, Exceedingly Choice and Well Known Collection of English Coins, of the late Lieut. Colonel Durrant. Monday 19th April – 27th April, 1847. Octavo, pp. 92, 1158 lots. The entire catalogue ruled in red with prices and buyers names. One of the most important sales of the nineteenth century. Three quarter cloth and marbled boards, rebacked with original morocco labels on spine. Some wear to extremities, contents very good. £500 The Durrant collection is not only a highly important auction catalogue containing many fine specimens, but also now a highly notorious one. Manville ‘Biographical Dictionary’ p.84 explains - “From the mid-nineteenth century it was known that someone had exchanged inferior coins for many choice specimens in early nineteenth century sales. Shortly after his death, a note on his thefts was published in the Numismatic Chronicle, 1847/8, 149, without actually naming him. Recently K. F. Sugden established that the thief was Durrant and that pedigrees from such sales as Dimsdale, Rich and Trattle were thereby muddled. Although the thefts apparently were known to several contemporaries while he was still alive, because he was ‘an officer and a gentleman’ his name was not published at the time to spare his family’s embarrassment.”
