Bubble tea in a cup no in a Glass with bubbles If you like your tea in a cup and saucer, forget it.

Just a weekday night in Soho like any other and the clientel of the pictured coffee shop are slurping something said to be tea through a straw (a straw!) that is as fat as my forefinger.

This is what is called bubble tea, and it’s a long way from Earl Grey or English Break-fast.

This it’s more like a bizarre blended milkshake and a very sugary tea but here is the strange bit it is filled with soft little tapioca pellets.

(Or bubbles. Hence the name. And the fat straw.).

I believe that bubble tea is arriving in Britain it will be interesting to try some.

Coffee Bean Research.

A new study says despite earlier concerns, that downing lots of coffee doesn’t seem to increase the risk of high blood pressure.

However, the evidence in the report is not conclusive.

Some researchers have suggested that coffee might be a cause of high blood pressure which has been linked to heart disease, stroke, and a shorter life expectancy.

The report took data from previous studies that included more than 170,000 people.

Coffee doesn’t seem to increase the risk of high blood pressure

From the EditorWell in this edition McDonalds are there again with sales of coffee keeping McDonadls alive , Costa expands to new venues with studants in mind and we have Electrolux yes the hoover company move into the coffee market as they team up with Lavazza.

Biofuels being made from spent coffee grinds a great idea I thought. Also conflicting stories

arise as now we find that coffee does not increase blood pressure good well I am glad about that. In this issue we also tell all aboutthe new DC Pro inteligent grinder does the job for you.Coffee shops suffer as Birkenhead Coffee Shops close down and on a brighter note Nora Higgins an 85 year old uses coffee morning to raise money for Macmillan nurses and an old story of Nescaffe coffee being drugged by

the German army in the second world war. Coffee problems growing in Ethiopia as the coffee crops dry up.

Anyway thats it for now

The Birkenhead Coffee Shop ClosedownIt’s sad as we hear of TJ Hughes bringing in the receivers, but what get’s my attention is the closure of two coffee shops in the matter of weeks in Birkenhead.

First of all we had the rapid closure of Cafe Bien which was opend as quick as it was closed, it was in the old Hamiltons building on the corner of Birkenhead oposite Mcdonalds.

This all took place before Mcdonalds decided to turn to

full bean coffee this would of certainly put the nail in Cafe Bien Coffin. The cafe itself had great surroundings but the only let down was the blend of coffee,I am not sure who blended itbut I guess it was an experiment.

The other coffee shop to close in Birkenhead was Beeoffee, at first the Coffee in this coffee shop was superbthe blend of coffee was good but then deteriorated in time this was

probably the reason for the shop to close as around it are other coffee shops like Cappucinos and the Coffee mill not forgeting the new coffee shop just recently opend in the Country stalls of Birkenhead Market so this is probably why the demise of the two shops.Anyway back to more coffee shop findings.Jay Cee

Fast food and

coffee danger

Fast food and coffee danger

scientists seem to have found that Eating fast food and then washing it down with a coffee can be dangerous for your health.

The caffeine doubles the elevation of blood sugar levels triggered by eating fatty foods, in fact, a coffee chaser can cause blood sugar levels similar to those seen in people at risk for diabetes.

Apparently saturated fat interferes with the body’s ability to clear sugars from the blood then, when it is combined with caffeinated coffee, the impact can be even worse,

The researchers said the fat-caffeine combo interferes with the communication between the gut and the pancreas, the organ responsible for producing the insulin that helps regulate

sugar levels in the blood.

Something to keep in mind next time you feel the urge for a double cheeseburger and a bag of greasy fries then an esspresso, latte or even an Americano.

Students are COSTAS’ next target as it looks for new avenues to expand.Apparently COSTA plans to open coffee shops at universities after fantastic results from recent trials.

Its first Trial at Warwick University, has had takings up to £18,000 a week, despite students’ concerns at sky-high tuition fees. COSTA has already opend a second branch in Nottingham and the

firm says Northampton, Coventry and two in Birmingham will open by the end of 2011.

COSTA has also expanded into Odeon cinemas and has its first two drive-through sites in Nottingham and Swindon.

The COSTA chain saw its takings grow to £422million

last year, and is now targeting hospitals and hopes to open more in Tesco stores.

Costa is already the UK’s biggest coffee chain with 1,200 outlets but owner Whitbread wants to add 700 more by 2016.

Electrolux Enters Coffee Market With LavazzaAs more and more companies jump on the coffee band wagon so does the Swedish company Electrolux AB (ELUX-B.SK) as they enter the lucrative single-serve coffee industry with Luigi Lavazza SpA by launching a new line of single-serve coffee makers for the domestic market.

The household appliance maker’s coffee machines will be launched as part of a joint venture with the privately owned Italian coffee company. Lavazza already sells single serve coffee products under the A Modo Mio brand and the partnership will face tough competition from European beverage giant Nestle SA ( NSRGY) and its market-leading Nespresso brand.

The coffee machines will be launched this summer in Sweden and Finland, and will then be released in several other European countries.

Hot Drinks Fight BacteriaRecent studies in South Carolina claim hot coffee and tea reduce the chance of bacteria in your nose.

A study, at the Medical University of South Carolina, found that hot drinks lower the risk of carrying methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA. MRSA is a highly resistant bacterial infection.

It is thought that there maybe tea or tea-based extracts that may have antimicrobial properties that may possibly destabilize or weaken MRSA.

It was found that people with MRSA who drank hot tea or coffee had a 50% less likely chance of having MRSA in their noses. This result has the potential for managing MRSA infections in hospitals all over the world.

A City coffee shop named as one of the best in the UK

A City coffee shop named as one of the best in the UK has now opened a second outlet with fantastic views over the Liverpool waterfront.

The two business partners opened their first coffee shop at Brunswick Dock around five years ago, and have now built a reputation for their quality of their real coffee and for producing the highly impressive latte art and being one of the few coffee shops in the city to do so.

Around a year ago, Bean was the only North West coffee shop to be listed in The Independent’s ’50 Best Coffee Shops in the UK’ by a panel of coffee experts.

The new coffee shop offers a wide range of fresh hot or cold food and drinks to eat in or take away. Up to 30 different sandwiches will be available through a ‘make while you wait’ sandwich bar, as well as jacket potatoes, hot soup, paninis, salads, pastries, cakes and pasta. The shop is also fully licensed, allowing customers to enjoy a

range of premium wines, beers and boasts free wifi, offering office facilities away from the office.

I can tell you the coffee is well worth a try and is located in the corner unit of the car park at William Jessop Way next to the Malmaison Hotel.

An 83-year-old coffee morning fundraiser

85 years old Nora Higgins is raising a cup after being named the top coffee morning charity worker in the Bath area.

Nora Higgins, from Batheaston, raised the most money in Bath and north east Somerset at Macmillan’s

World’s Biggest

Coffee Morning event last year.

Nora Raised £859.74 from an event she organised at the Good Shepherd Church hall.

Nora, who has been holding coffee mornings for 10 years, first got involved through her late friend Valerie Ticehurst.Valerie was diagnosed with cancer herself that’s when she decided to get involved in coffee mornings for Macmillan.

Nora said: “My friend Valerie used to hold the annual Batheaston coffee morning for Macmillan before I got involved.

“After she passed away from cancer we decided to hold the fundraiser in memory of her, and to thank Macmillan nurses for the support they gave her.”

Nora has decided that she will be taking part in this year’s national programme of coffee mornings, which takes place on Friday, September 30.

This year is Macmillan’s centenary, marking 100 years since the charity was founded by Douglas Macmillan.

Free Wi-Fi in Tesco storesTesco Supermarkets are to pilot Wi-Fi in four of its shops in the UK then roll the service out nationwide if the trial proves a success.

Comparing prices in-store to rivals using iPhone apps or laptops is one of the main reasons

for the decision with them hinting that they could introduce the system across all 2,700 UK branches.

Wi-Fi is already widely available in coffee shops and other food outlets across the UK such as McDonalds.

Most Tesco stores already possess the systems in place to enable Wi-Fi delivery, making a quick nationwide rollout a real possibility.

Spent coffee grounds have been turned into biodieselSpent coffee grounds have been turned into biodiesel by Portuguese and Spanish researchers, who combined two separate processes to produce the biodiesel in one step.

Spent coffee grounds contain lipids, most of which are triglycerides that can be extracted and converted into products that make up biodiesel.

The process combines extraction and transesterification in one step the current commercial biodiesel production consists of an alkali-catalysed method to produce a mixture of fatty acid alkyl esters and glycerol then purification processes are then needed to remove the catalyst and by-products.

The researchers explain that CO2

may play a dual role in the reaction by increasing the extraction rate of oil from the spent coffee grounds and recovering the methyl esters from the reaction mixture.

This work should pave the way to develop new methods to produce valuable chemicals and biofuels.’

Ethiopia coffee crops drying upCoffee is an important cash crop for many small farmers in Ethiopia. But the severe drought this year has left plots full of withered plants and unripe fruit. Some smallholders, with Plan’s support, are turning to new

crops and irrigation methods to achieve a more secure future for their families.

This year the long drought killed many plants. All the leaves have started to fall off and there are no flowers at all.

Production has gone right down as the coffee plants dried up. The amount of coffee this year is going to be very, very small.

From Coffee in the UK to Coffee in The USA AS people we always like to hear about new foods and we like to try them. The USA’s Seattle’s Best Coffee has now brought to us two new product lines – ready-to-drink, canned, iced lattes and a new level system to help you find the right roast for your coffee taste buds.

Selecting coffee today is like selecting the right wine. Often we buy a variety or roast only to be disappointed when the brew comes out too strong or too weak. Seattle’s Best Coffee has a new

labeling techniqe for their retail coffees packages by numbers or levels from one through five. The varying levels of taste and strength allow you to pick the type of coffee you enjoy or let you experiment with different coffee tastes to find a brew you like. The level system is like a cheat sheet that gives you an idea of what to expect from each Coffe variety.

Seattle’s Best has blended and roasted each level to assure the consumer that each bag will deliver the taste and degree of

strength they prefer.Like many franchise coffeehouses, Seattle’s Best has designed Iced Lattes as a way to extend their brand into the ready-to-drink, America retail beverage market. These coffees are sold as a single 9.5-ounce can or in a 4-pack, the lattes come in 3 flavors – Iced Latte, Iced Mocha, and Iced Vanilla Latte maybe the UK market will copy the idea.

grinder dc oneThe coffee grinder – a fundamental device for the quality of the espressoThe coffee grinder is necessary for the correct grinding of roasted coffee beans, thus providing theideal grinding point for the espresso preparation. Turning coffee into small particles increases the effectiveness of the extraction, since the estimated overall surface of the coffee grinds exposed to water covers some square metres for each dose in the filter holder.“We decided to design and manufacture our own on-demand coffee grinder because we noticed the scarce knowledge about this sector in the international market” states Paolo Dalla Corte, coowner of Dalla Corte Company along with his sister Elsa. “This device is generally seen by mostprofessionals simply as an instrument that ‘grinds’ coffee beans, rather than an essential part of a system for the preparation of the espresso. A long study on grinding and a long experience in flat burr blades design have been necessary to obtain the perfect ‘cut’ and therefore the optimum grinding point for the espresso”. As a matter of fact, a correct grinding and a suitable distribution of particles obtained from the cut of roasted beans lie at the base of a correct espresso extraction. On the contrary, a badly ground coffee is the first step towards a bad extraction.

The deviceFrom coffee grinder to system

dc one by Dalla Corte is an on-demand flat burr coffee grinder. Its brushed aluminium body issturdy and easy to clean. Its polycarbonate bell hopper has a capacity of 1.5 kg.It can be operated easily: just place the single or double filter holder on the support and exert alight pressure to obtain the right dose of freshly ground coffee. The coffee grinder will automatically recognize a single or double dose.DC one is equipped with a display showing its operating status and useful information such as the set grinding point and time, as well as the number of brewed coffees, the temperature of engine and ground coffee; it also signals any possible breakdown and need of burr change. Grinding can be adjusted down to one hundredth of a millimetre simply by pushing the buttons on the front panel, thanks to a granulometry adjustment with a variation in the spacing between burrs of 0.01 millimetres for each graduation.

The engine temperature is always under control: if it exceeds a pre-established range, the coolingfan turns on, preserving the roasted coffee from overheating, which would negatively affect thequality of the espresso.

THE SYSTEM.

DC one is connected electronically to the espresso machine through a serial cable, thus creating a complete system for the preparation of the

espresso, from bean to cup. Theconstant dialogue between the two devices controls the extraction and, if necessary, automatically adjusts dose and grinding, thus ensuring a perfect espresso, extraction after extraction, with no need for barista’s intervention.

From Over the Pond $270 million to be invested by Nestle in Vietnham CoffeeNestle , the world’s biggest food maker, is said to be investing $270 million in a factory in southern Vietnam, this move is to expand its presence in the top robusta coffee-producing nation.

Nestle’s fifth Factory in Vietnam, would start

production in 2013, making coffee products for consumption for both export and local consumption.

Under the plan, Nestle would raise its coffee volume bought directly from Vietnamese farmers to 30,000 tonnes a year over the next five years.

The group’s purchase would be at least 230,000 tonnes of coffee this year, from Vietnam the world’s second-biggest coffee producer after Brazil.

Coffee Lover or Coffee addicted. Complimenting the awareness of the taste of real coffee, lots of establishments have begun to offer fantastic ranges off coffees along with Bottled beers and high-scoring wines by the glass, but is this promoting addiction well I don’t think so

When we get whole beans and grind them then place them in the brewing basket, the button is pressed and the

black velvety liquid arrives in the small cup or glass.

Does this describe your cup of coffee that you have every morning.

If the above is so, you could have a coffee addiction this is one of the latest tests and surveys taking place in Europe by various scientists from eight European countries.

Personally I think we just like coffee and enjoy it made correctly, so if you drink to much of that black stuff don’t worry you are not addicted you are just a coffee lover.
