WelcomeWe are glad you are here! Thank you for joining us for worship this Sunday. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, in all the ways you can.”

AttendancePlease let us know of your attendance this morning by completing the pew pad.

Newcomer OrientationWe invite you to learn about the life of our church, ways you can get involved, and how to become a member by attending Newcomer Orientation. Newcomer Orientation is held the second Sunday of each month at 9:45 a.m. in the Hospitality Room

CALL TO WORSHIPMartha AenchbacherTo the fisherman Jesus said: “Follow me and I will make you fish for people." To the tax collector Jesus said: “Follow me.” To the rich man Jesus said: “Go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” At the last supper Jesus said:“Follow me.” To you and to me and to all of us Jesus says:"Follow me!"

*AFFIR M ATION OF FAITH | We Belong to GodWe belong to God, creator of all that is and all that is to come, abundant provider of the gifts in this life and the gifts in our own hearts. It is God alone who gives life, who is generous beyond measure with grace and blessing. We follow Christ, whom God sent to teach and heal, to show us a new way of living, with love and trust and courage, with joy and generosity. In this faith Jesus gave of himself, even his very life. He was crucified and buried; yet God raised him from death, and he lives among us, and grants his spirit to us. We live by that Holy Spirit, and entrust ourselves to the Spirit's guidance and empowerment. As members of the church, the Body of Christ, we devote ourselves to lives of love, rejoicing in the power of forgiveness, the reality of resurrection, and the mystery of eternal life. Amen.

Prelude LyricsI am a seeker, a poor

sinful creature. There is no weaker than I am. I am a seeker. You are

a teacher. You are a reacher, so reach down.

Won't you reach out and lead me, guide me and keep me in the shelter of your care each day?

'Cause I am a seeker. You are a keeper. You

are the leader, won't you show me the way.

answer? Forsake my all to serve another? Though

darkness falls, stay a believer? I hear a call, now will I answer? I see a light,

now will I follow? Fill up this life that grows more hollow? Make joy reside

where there lives sorrow? I see a light, now will I

follow? I hear a call from out of nowhere and from everywhere I go. I hear a call, now will I answer? I

SACR A MENT OF HOLY COMMU NIONCome to the table of Jesus our Redeemer!Jesus invites us here to be part of the people of God.Come to the table humbly, not because we have earned a place here, but because we need mercy and help.Come because you love God, and want to love God more.Come because Jesus first loved us, and gave himself for us.Come because you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit. We come to experience the mystery of God’s grace. On the night he was betrayed, Jesus had a meal with his friends. He took a loaf of bread, and after giving thanks to God, he broke it and gave it to his disciples. He said, “Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, remember me." Let us pray: God our Creator, thank you for the gift of your son Jesus Christ, whose love pursues us our whole life long. Thank you Jesus, for giving your life to us in word and deed, even unto death, even death on a cross. Come Holy Spirit, feed us with your love, that we may be filled with power to love God with all our hearts and souls and minds. Amen.

The Receiving of the Elements of Communion and The Consecration of Our GiftsAll are invited to commune at Christ’s table and to bring your pledge card forward. If you need to be served in your pew, please call this to the attention of an usher. All elements at both stations are gluten-free.

Response to the WordTHE SACR A MENT OF HOLY COMMU NION When we gather to praise God and celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion, we remember that we are people who have preferred our wills to the will of God. Accepting God’s power to become new persons in Christ, let us confess our sin before God and one another.

Anthem LyricsCome! Live in the light!Shine with the joy and

the love of the Lord! We are called to be light for

the kingdom, to live in the freedom of the city

of God! We are called to act with justice. We are

called to love tenderly. We are called to serve one

mercy to all those in fear!We are called to be hope

Gracious and merciful God, we never seem to measure up to Christian perfection. Try as we may, we do not walk blamelessly on this earth. Forgive us when we do things we know to be wrong, and when we speak things we know to be untrue. Help us, loving God, to honor you and to walk with you by doing no evil on this earth. Teach us to walk in humility and mercy with your people, and share your justice and grace with your world. Amen. The Lord be with you.And also with you.Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. In ancient days, you created us in your image and bestowed your blessing upon us, that we might be a blessing. When we fell short and withheld that blessing, you held our hand and walked with us back to the path of love and generosity. You called us to be your people and invited us to walk in your ways. Even when we turned away, you continued to walk with us and extended the hand of your steadfast love. In the words and example of the prophets, and in the actions of all those who shared your bounty with us, you showed us your wisdom and your truth. And in the fullness of time, you sent your Son, Jesus Christ, who offered his very life to us, that the world might know your grace. Even when we withhold our gratitude and betray your ways, you remain faithful and call us back to lives of love and generosity. Even when we cling to our treasure rather than share it with your people, you open our hearts and show us a better way—a way of generosity and faithful living, a way of rejoicing in your presence among us. And so, with your people on earth, and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:Congregation sings:

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna, in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name, who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

Holy are you, and blessed is your selfless gift to us, Jesus Christ. You sent Christ to walk with us as brother and friend, inviting us to hear your truth and to see your ways. As Christ’s body here on earth, you draw us into your presence, rescue us from our selfishness, and show us the joys of generous living. With joy and gratitude, we break this bread and remember the many times Jesus was revealed to his disciples in the breaking of the bread. In remembrance, we will take and eat this bread. With awe and wonder, we fill this cup and remember the many times Jesus abundantly and lovingly poured out his love and healing power. In remembrance, we will drink from this cup and reflect on your abundant grace. And so, in remembrance of these, your mighty acts of love and grace, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us your compassion and grace, that your mercy and your love may flow through our lives like water through sand. As you have become poor for us, giving us your very life, help us to live simply and generously, that others may simply live. By your Spirit, make us one with Christ, one with each other in giving and grace, and one in ministry to a world in need of your love. Bind us together in your Spirit until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at your heavenly banquet. Through Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and forevermore. Amen.Congregation sings:

Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen.

The Music During Communion“For Everyone Born” | arr. Tom Trenney Sung by the Chamber Ensemble; Ana Abrantes, cello

This anthem has been placed in the choir library to the Glory of God and in honor of the Cornerstone Sunday School Class by Nancy Sharp.

Song LyricsFor everyone born, a place

at the table, for everyone born, clean water and

bread, a shelter, a space, a safe place for growing,

for everyone born, a star overhead, and God

will delight when we are creators of justice and joy,

compassion and peace: yes, God will delight

when we are creators of justice, justice and joy! For woman and man, a

place at the table, revising the roles, deciding the

share, with wisdom and grace, dividing the power,

a system that's fair,For young and for old, a

place at the table, a voice to be heard, a part in the

song, the hands of a child in hands that are wrinkled,

for young and for old, the right to belong, For

everyone born, a place at the table, to live without fear, and simply to be, to

work, to speak out, to witness and worship, for everyone born, the right

to be free.

Light the NightLast year, we raised more than $10,000 as a team for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night fundraiser. This event raises funds in support of research for blood cancers. As there are no means of preventing or early screening for most blood cancers, the LLS research agenda is focused on finding cures. LLS drives research in areas of unmet medical need, and helps to bridge the gap between academic discovery and drug development. We hope to meet or beat our goal from last year and bring light to the darkness of cancer. Will you join us? The Light the Night walk will take place on Friday, October 20, at 5:00 p.m. at the Classic Center. Register to walk or donate to team #ChuckStrong online.
