Welcome to our September 2013 production of “The Wizard of Oz”. Our production is the Royal Shakespeare's version and closely resembles the immensely popular film version starring Judy Garland as Dorothy, which no doubt you will all have seen many times. This show has proved extremely challenging and our production team have worked exceptionally hard to pull together and deliver such a complicated show, with all the elaborate costumes, scenery and special effects; all to a tight budget. The final result, along with a great cast of adults and ‘Munchkins’, I hope you'll agree is another spectacular show which I trust you will all enjoy.

I would like to draw your attention to our page on fund raising later in the programme. Unfortunately we were evicted from our scenery storage facilities earlier this year and have had to build a purpose built storage shed at a considerable expense; otherwise we would have lost a huge amount of scenery and props. Our Stage Manager Mike has put in an enormous amount of work, supported by the rest of the Stage Crew and other Society members, to implement this move over the Summer. However, the whole exercise has severely depleted our funds and we have launched a fund raising campaign to help cover the costs for this. Your support for this via our Front of House raffle or

other future fund raising enterprises would be greatly appreciated and will enable us to continue entertaining you for many years to come.

Please make a note in your diaries for our next production which is the Mel Brooks hysterical “The Producers”. This will run from 25th to 29th March 2014 at the Princes Hall. Don't forget to book your tickets early to get the best seats.

Finally, we are always on the lookout for new talent either on the stage or helping out behind the scenes, so if you would like to get involved please contact our Secretary as you would be most welcome.

We hope you enjoy the show.

Best wishes

BIOGRAPHIES - THE PRODUCTION TEAM

Mike Davall (Stage Manager) If you enjoyed “The Sound of Music” I’m sure that you will also love “The Wizard of Oz” - another great family show. This version is the RSC’s (Royal Shakespeare Company) version of the film. We have a fabulous set and also lots of effects and pyrotechnics – flashes, smoke and flame throwing - enough to keep everyone busy and on their toes. Hopefully, we will be in our new scenery hut by now, thanks to your efforts with our raffles, which are helping us to meet some of the costs of this venture. Our next offering will be “The Producers”, by Mel Brooks. This had a good run at the Drury Lane Theatre in London and we hope that some of that magic, as well as the magic of “The Wizard of Oz”, will rub off on our production.

Joyce Atlee (Choreographer) Joyce joined what was then the RAE Operatic Society to choreograph “The Most Happy Fella” in 1982. Since then she has choreographed 40 shows as well as being part of the cast of numerous productions, working backstage or in the lighting box, Costume Manager and often joining the Front of House team including acting as Front of House Manager for “The Sound of Music” in March this year. “The Wizard of Oz” is a very different show to choreograph and setting dance moves for ‘bugs’, ‘poppies’, a scarecrow, a tin-man and a lion has been a new experience. Joyce never expected that the latest David Attenborough TV series on insects would be necessary viewing for choreographic inspiration!

Paul Tickner (Musical Director) This is Paul’s 11th show with CFAOS, and his 7th show as Musical Director. With such fabulous melodies and engaging story, this show has been a delight to rehearse and direct. After over 35 years as a professional musician with both military and civilian bands, Paul now earns his living in the operating theatre at Frimley Park Hospital as a senior nurse. In his spare time, he likes to keep fit running and cycling and plays bass guitar in a couple of rock bands. Paul recently received an Accolade of Excellence from NODA for the Musical he co-wrote with Sue Sampson “Behind the Bike Sheds”, the follow up to his first show, the award winning “Stand by Your Beds”. Paul is now working hard writing his third musical, and been asked to write some original material for the “Military Wives Choir” to perform at The Houses of Parliament.

Charlotte Walker (Director) Charlotte is both thrilled and honoured to be directing her first show for CFAOS. She has participated in over forty productions, playing roles such as Katie Brown in “Calamity Jane”, Mrs Molloy in “Hello Dolly” and Roxie Hart in “Chicago” as well as fulfilling the role of Assistant Director for five very varied shows from “The Pirates of Penzance” to “The Full Monty”. Challenge is a word that has been used constantly over the last six months in relation to this show, but everyone involved has responded spectacularly, not least the technical team who have had the unenviable task of creating a cyclone on the Prince’s Hall stage! Charlotte would like to take this opportunity to thank her very talented cast, crew and production team for all their efforts and amazing support. Charlotte hopes you will sit back and enjoy the magic of this classic tale, travelling through Oz with Dorothy and her friends and singing along with the wonderful familiar music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg. Charlotte is also Director of her own venture, an executive search business which she is hoping to devote more time and energy to following “The Wizard of Oz”.

BIOGRAPHIES - THE PRODUCTION TEAM (CONTINUED)

Christine White (Assistant Director) Christine first appeared on stage with Charlotte as part of the dance team in “My Fair Lady” back in 1989 and has danced in many, many shows with her since then! So she is delighted to have this opportunity to assist Charlotte in her first role as Director for such a fantastic show. With over 30 years experience on the amateur stage Christine is often found high kicking in the dance team punctuated with several principal roles - favourites being Kate (twice!) in “Kiss Me Kate”, Lena in “Singin’ in the Rain” and Grace in “Annie”. As well as appearing on stage, she has also choreographed three shows for FAOS – “Oliver”, the British Premiere of “Phantom” and NODA Award Winning “Half a Sixpence”. She would like to thank her husband Darren and son, Kieran for all the support they have given her throughout rehearsals as this certainly has been a challenge with all the ‘technical’ issues involved for such an iconic show!

DOROTHY GALE - Beth Mabin Beth joined CFAOS last year for, “The Sound of Music” taking on the role of Liesl. She is delighted to be part of “The Wizard of Oz” as Dorothy, especially since the last time she donned her ruby slippers was when she was in junior school! Beth enjoys all aspects of performing and has played various instruments, as well as singing, for as long as she can remember. Beth has starred in numerous musicals and operas in recent years; some of her favourites being, “The Magic Flute” as second genie and Dulcie in, “The Boyfriend”. Beth has also been singing with the National Youth Choir since Easter of this year and was delighted to sing as part of this choir in BBC PROMS 2013 last month. When not taking part in extra-curricular activities, Beth is a full time student and Music Scholar at The Sixth Form College, Farnborough. She has just started her final year and would love to pursue a career in the performing arts after college.

BIOGRAPHIES - THE PRINCIPALS

TOTO - Maisie Taylor This is Maisie's acting debut and she is so excited to be playing the role of ‘Toto’ (even though she is a girl!!) She is just hoping she remembers all her lines. Maisie is good friends with all involved with the Society as her master is Victoria, our make-up manager. Victoria often brings Maisie along backstage to watch the goings on. She is 8 years old now and her tail still wags at the thought of nice long walks, her biscuits and sleeping on her master’s bed! She is a bit nervous of some of the characters in the show as she has been watching Victoria design the make-up and has seen some pretty ‘scary’ faces!

AUNT EM/GLINDA - Amanda Buchan Amanda is delighted to be involved with “The Wizard of Oz”. From a child, this show has always been a favourite of hers and, aged 5, she owned and enjoyed dancing in her own pair of ruby slippers! Amanda began performing on the stage as a child, both singing and dancing, and was hooked! She has appeared in many shows ranging from “Oklahoma”, “Kiss me Kate” and “Sweet Charity” to several Gilbert and Sullivan comic Operettas. This is her second show with CFAOS, having recently performed as Sister Margaretta in “The Sound of Music” and she is looking forward to being involved in many more shows with CFAOS. When not performing, Amanda lives in Farnham with her husband Matthew and their young son. Amanda is enjoying playing the dual roles of Auntie Em and Glinda the Good Witch and ‘wishes’ that you will all fall under the spell of this magical show!

UNCLE HENRY/EMERALD CITY GUARD - Ron Walker Ron has enjoyed singing for as long as he can remember and, in earlier years, honed his talents in rugby clubs and other miscellaneous dives before inflicting himself on this Society. He has now taken part in over sixty of our productions, in the chorus, as a dancer (but only when it really couldn’t be avoided) and in a variety of principal roles, including Max Detweiler in our recent production of “The Sound of Music”. Particular favourite roles have included The Red Shadow in “The Desert Song”, the Emcee in “Cabaret”, Emile de Becque in “South Pacific” and Fagin in “Oliver!”. An enthusiastic if untalented golfer, he is regularly to be found on local golf courses rooting around for his ball in strange locations not normally frequented by others. Ron is married to our Director, Charlotte, and is one half of our Box Office team.

Page 10: CODY FARNBOROUGH AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY PRESENTScodymusical.co.uk/productions/previous/wizardofoz/files/programme.pdf · CODY FARNBOROUGH AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY PRESENTS ... Welcome

HUNK/SCARECROW - Rob Tickner Rob joined CFAOS in 2005 for “Singin’ in the Rain” playing the physically challenging role of Cosmo Brown. Since then he has appeared every year with the Society, most notably as Pseudolus in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”; the lead, Jerry, in “The Full Monty” and The Pirate King in “The Pirates of Penzance”. “The Wizard of Oz” sees Rob in his thirteenth show with CFAOS, in another physically challenging role, that of the Scarecrow. He’s only just started rehearsing and already he says he’s covered in bruises and wishes he really didn’t have any bones! In the paying world, Rob is a Production Engineer with an electronics company based in Hook.

HICKORY/TINMAN - Philip Mumford Philip joined the society as a member of the chorus in 1991 for “Gigi”. Since then he has been seen in many principal roles including Curly in “Oklahoma” , Oscar in “Sweet Charity” and more recently Captain Von Trapp in “The Sound of Music”. However, the show closest to Philip's heart is “Jesus Christ Superstar”. In 1995 he played the part of Jesus and in 2011 he was lucky enough to be cast in the part of Judas when the society performed the show again. In his spare time, he performs at the 100 club in Oxford street with his band B.A.U (Business As Usual) to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust. Apart from working in the banking industry, he is a keen runner and likes to spend time with his wife Jane and children Daniel , Ellen and Alfie.

BIOGRAPHIES - THE PRINCIPALS (CONTINUED)

ZEKE/LION - Tim Canfield This highlights how varied your life can be in the world of ‘AmDram’. By day Tim is a Marketing Director at a world leading testing company; by night he’s bounding around the stage, dressed in a furry Lion onesie! This is nothing new, not the onesie I mean – that is a first, but the variety of roles and situations you find yourself getting into with each part you play. Followers of the Society will have seen Tim in a wide range of shows, ever since his first in “Robert & Elizabeth” as a 10 year old boy (actual age, not to be confused with playing a similar aged part last year in “Behind the Bike Sheds”). Indeed, not all require a costume – take for example Ethan Girard in “The Full Monty”. This is in fact Tim’s 53rd show with CFAOS, and he has also supported other local societies. Tim has been the artwork designer for the Society for the past 16 years.

ALMIRA GULTCH/WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST - Melanie Martin Melanie is thrilled to be playing the wonderfully wicked Witch of the West in this production and has thoroughly enjoyed the challenge! Melanie has been a member of the Society for just a couple of years, joining in 2011 for “Jesus Christ Superstar” but has quickly found good friends and enjoyed playing fun character parts such as The Baroness Elsa in our previous production of “The Sound of Music”. Prior to joining CFAOS, Melanie was no stranger to the stage, working as a holiday entertainer and presenter on cruise ships and was a member of another local society where she enjoyed many years of performing in shows and dancing Latin and Ballroom. When not on stage Melanie works as a Marketing Manager for a large technology company in Wokingham and is enjoying her first year of marriage with her supportive husband Alex.

PROFESSOR MARVEL/WIZARD OF OZ - Steve Woolford This is Steve's 19th show with CFAOS having joined the Society in 1998. He has appeared in both chorus and principal roles for the Society, including Daddy Warbucks in “Annie”, Sir Douglas Haig in “Oh What a Lovely War”, Sir John Tremayne in “Me & My Girl”, Molokov in “Chess”, Sheriff Dodd in “Best Little Whorehouse”, and Mr Bumble in “Oliver!”. This is the first time he has played the title role in a show, though it must be one of the smallest title roles there is, the plus side being he hasn't had to attend too many rehearsals. In the real world, Steve is a Business Manager at NatWest for the Farnborough and Basingstoke area and is the father of Danielle Woolford, who played Marta in our production of “The Sound of Music”.

CAN YOU PLEASE HELP US?

Founded in 1921, Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society, as it’s known today, has gone from strength to strength from performing one show per year to two shows per year in 1976. We celebrated our 90th anniversary two years ago, the last 40 years performing here at the Princes Hall and, until now, we have always managed to fund ourselves. Sadly, with lower audience figures and mounting costs, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain the reserves to support two shows per year, bearing in mind that it takes approximately £25,000 to put on the standard of show that our audiences have come to expect. Failure to achieve these sums would see the society dropping to one show per year. We were informed earlier this year that we will lose the use of our scenery/properties store, so, as a consequence of this, we have had to find the funds to replace it. This has made a significant dent in our capital to the tune of around £12,000. We have, as you will have seen at our last show, commenced rigorous fund raising activities, starting with the new venture of running a raffle at each performance. Audiences at ‘The Sound of Music’ raised approximately £600 for which we are extremely grateful and we are hoping to better this for ‘The Wizard of Oz’ . How can I help? – I hear you ask. We would be delighted if you would like to help us by either sponsoring the Society or by making a donation via text to the Society via our “Just Giving” page: text CODY00 followed by the amount you wish to donate to 70070. Alternatively, complete the form below and post this with your cash or cheque made out to CFAOS (please put the words “fund raising” on the back of the cheques) into the box marked “donations” in the foyer during the interval and at the end of the performance. Or send direct to CODY Farnborough AOS, 10 Cody Court, 377 Farnborough Road, Farnborough, Hampshire, GU14 8AW. We would be pleased to offer any company that would like to sponsor us an advert in our award winning programmes free of charge. Alternatively, just buying some raffle tickets would be a huge help to support Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society in achieving our goal of funding our new scenery/properties store. We would all like to thank you for your continued support and help, without which we would not be here. For information of all other fund raising activities for the forthcoming year, please see our website:

THE STORY

ACT ONE Teenager Dorothy Gale lives on a farm in Kansas with her Aunt Em, Uncle Henry and Toto, her dog, but feels that her aunt and uncle don't understand her. The unpleasant Miss Gulch threatens to call the sheriff after Toto bites her leg. Dorothy wants to escape to a nicer place, somewhere ‘Over the Rainbow’. She runs away from the farm and meets Professor Marvel, who tells her all about ‘The Wonders of the World’. They are interrupted by a twister, and Dorothy runs home for shelter. Inside the farmhouse, she bangs her head on the bedside. The house is borne away by the storm.

Landing in Oz, Dorothy's house flattens the Wicked Witch of the East. Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, greets Dorothy and Toto and tells her where she is. Glinda calls for the Munchkins to ‘Come Out’. The Munchkin people are overjoyed at the demise of their wicked tormentor (‘Ding Dong the Witch is Dead’). Glinda presents Dorothy with the magic ruby slippers that belonged to the dead witch. This enrages the witch's sister, the Wicked Witch of the West. Glinda tells Dorothy that the Wizard of Oz might be able to help her return home, and how to find him (‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’). Dorothy sets off toward the Emerald City to speak to the great Oz (‘You’re Off to See the Wizard’). On her way, she meets the Scarecrow, who feels inadequate with a head full of only stuffing (‘If I Only Had a Brain’). Dorothy invites him to join her on the journey, hoping the Wizard can help him (‘We’re Off to See the Wizard’). They soon meet the Tinman, who is unhappy with his empty tin chest (‘If I Only Had a Heart’) and invite him to join them on their journey. The Wicked Witch of the West threatens to set the Scarecrow on fire unless Dorothy gives her the ruby slippers; Dorothy refuses. In the dark forest, they encounter a very unhappy Lion, afraid of his own tail (‘If I Only Had the Nerve’). He too joins the group on the road to the Emerald City. Emerging into the light, the friends encounter another obstacle. The Wicked Witch has cast a spell creating a huge field of poppies that puts Dorothy and the Lion to sleep. Glinda counters this with a snowfall that nullifies the poison, so the friends may continue on their journey.

ACT TWO Arriving at the Emerald City, Dorothy and company persuade the gatekeeper to admit them. They are welcomed with open arms and are groomed in preparation for a meeting with the Wizard (‘The Merry Old Land of Oz’). The Wicked Witch flies down into the City with more threats, still angry that she doesn’t have the ruby slippers. The four friends and Toto go into the Wizard’s chamber. The great Oz appears and refuses to grant the group their wishes until they do something for him. He demands: “Bring Me the Broomstick” of the Wicked Witch of the West. In a forest on the way to the castle of the Wicked Witch of the West, the group try to

figure out how to steal the broomstick. They hide from a group of the Witch’s Winkies (‘March of the Winkies’). Meanwhile, in her castle, the Witch sends her acrobatic monkeys to capture Dorothy and Toto and bring them to the castle. She imprisons Dorothy and tells her to give up the slippers within the hour or die. Dorothy wishes more than ever that she was back at home (‘Over the Rainbow’ (reprise)). The Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion consider how to rescue her from the Witch’s castle. They disguise themselves as Winkies and sneak into the castle (‘March of the Winkies’ (reprise)). They find the Witch and Dorothy. When the Witch tries to attack the Scarecrow, Dorothy throws a bucket of water over the Witch, melting her. The Winkies are thrilled to be free of the Wicked Witch (‘Hail – Hail! The Witch is Dead’). Dorothy and her friends return with the broomstick to see the Wizard. Toto reveals that the Wizard's fearsome visage is an illusion; he is just an ordinary man. Still, he gives the Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion tokens of the brains, heart and courage that they already had inside of them. He tells Dorothy that he himself will take her to Kansas in his hot air balloon, appointing the Scarecrow as prime minister of Oz, with the Tinman and Lion as other ministers. Just before the balloon flies off, Toto runs into the crowd, and Dorothy retrieves him, missing her ride; she is seemingly stranded in Oz. Glinda appears to tell her that she and Toto had the power to return home all along. After saying goodbye to her friends, Dorothy clicks her heels together three times, chanting "There’s No Place Like Home". Back in Kansas, Aunt Em and Uncle Henry tell Dorothy that she hit her head and had been unconscious for days. Dorothy insists her adventure in Oz was real, not all a dream, but she is very grateful to be home.

The Wizard of Oz is a musical based on the 1939 film of the same name and L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The adaptation is by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jeremy Sams. The musical uses the Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg songs from the film and includes some new songs and additional music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and additional lyrics by Tim Rice. The Wizard of Oz was first turned into a musical extravaganza by Baum himself. A loose adaptation of his 1900 novel (there is no Wicked Witch or Toto, and there are some new characters), it first played in Chicago in 1902 and was a success on Broadway the following year. It then toured for nine years. The 1939 film adaptation bore a closer resemblance to the storyline of Baum's original novel than most previous versions. It was a strong success, winning the Academy Awards for best song and best score, and continues to be broadcast perennially. Among the many musical theatre adaptations of The Wizard of Oz, two previous ones have used the songs from the film. In 1945, the St. Louis Municipal Opera (MUNY) created a version with a script adapted by Frank Gabrielson from the novel, but it is influenced in

some respects by the motion picture screenplay. It uses most of the songs from the film. This was followed, in 1987, by a Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) adaptation designed to more closely recreate the film version. The book by John Kane closely follows the film's screenplay, and it and uses nearly all of the film's music. Both the MUNY and RSC adaptations were successes and have been revived numerous times in the U.S. and UK. The Wizard of Oz is Andrew Lloyd Webber's 18th musical. Tim Rice first collaborated with Lloyd Webber in 1965, together writing The Likes of Us. Their next piece was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, followed by two more concept albums that became hit musicals, Jesus Christ Superstar (1971) and Evita (1978). Except for a special collaboration for Queen Elizabeth's 60th birthday celebration, the musical Cricket in 1986, after Evita, each man turned to other collaborators to produce further well-known musical theatre works. The Wizard of Oz was Rice and Lloyd Webber's first production together in the West End in over three decades. To create the new musical, Lloyd Webber and director Jeremy Sams adapted the 1939 film's screenplay, and Rice and Lloyd Webber added several new songs to the film's score. In July 2010, Lloyd Webber told the Daily Mail, "The fact is that The Wizard of Oz has never really worked in the theatre. The film has one or two holes where in the theatre you need a song. For example, there's nothing for either of the two witches to sing. Tim and I are doing quite a specific thing, because we know what's missing." After previews beginning 7 February, the musical opened in the West End, at the London Palladium, on 1 March 2011. The role of Dorothy was originated by Danielle Hope, who was selected through the reality television show Over the Rainbow, and the title role of the Wizard was created by Michael Crawford. Over the Rainbow runner-up Sophie Evans performed the role of Dorothy on Tuesday evenings and when Hope was ill or on holiday. Hannah Waddingham originated the role of the Wicked Witch of the West and was replaced on September 2011 by her understudy, Marianne Benedict. Hope and Crawford left the production on 5 February 2012. Evans replaced Hope in the role of Dorothy full-time beginning 7 February 2012, and Russell Grant took over as The Wizard a week later, for 14weeks. Des O'Connor played The Wizard from May 2012 until the production closed. The musical was produced by Lloyd Webber and Bill Kenwright, with direction by Jeremy Sams, choreography by Arlene Phillips and sets and costumes by Robert Jones. It took in pre-opening sales of £10 million. The production celebrated its 500th performance on 9 May 2012 and closed on 2 September 2012.

About NODA Patron: The Lord Lloyd-Webber

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA), founded in 1899, is the main representative body for amateur theatre in the UK. It has a membership of some 2500 amateur/community theatre groups and 3000 individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of performing venues, ranging from the country's leading professional theatres to village halls. Members have access to a wide range of benefits. NODA is divided into eleven national Regions, each headed by a Region Councillor who sits on the Council (the ruling body of the Association), supported by a network of Regional Representatives and other volunteers. These volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association, the amateur theatre companies themselves. The Association is administered from its Headquarters in Peterborough, with a knowledgeable and friendly staff able to deal with virtually any enquiry relating to amateur theatre. There is a broad spectrum of ages involved with amateur theatre nationwide, from a burgeoning number of youth groups to adult companies, which meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic or musical, and enthusiasts involved backstage, front of house or in administration.

CODY FARNBOROUGH AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY

A BRIEF HISTORY Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society is a charitable organisation, which has raised over £60,000 for local charities in its long history. Formed in 1920 originally as the RAE Dramatic and Operatic Society, its first musical production was an operetta with a Chinese theme, “The Golden Amulet”, which was performed in the old RAE Concert Hall. Sadly proving uneconomical to maintain, this was demolished in 1929.

The Society was lucky enough to be granted the use of the Farnborough Town Hall until 1940, when it was taken over completely as a Civil Defence Centre. During this period, the association with the town of Farnborough grew to the extent that in 1935 the Society was reconstituted as the ‘Farnborough and Royal Aircraft Establishment Amateur Operatic Society’.

With the loss of the Town Hall in 1940, the Society was again without a home but a saviour appeared in the unlikely person of Mr Garcia, the lessee of the Theatre Royal, Aldershot. During the very first production (“The Mikado”) the Air Raid Warning sounded and Pooh-Bah kneeling before the Mikado said ‘Your Majesty, I have to announce that the sirens have just gone off’. The audience responded with one of the most prolonged rounds of applause the Society has ever received. Needless to say the show went on!

The large stage of the Theatre Royal enabled the Society to expand its repertoire of musicals, with an average of 5,500 people seeing each production, and it was with some regret that the Society had to say goodbye to the Theatre Royal at the end of the war. However, the new RAE Assembly Hall became available in 1944 and the Society returned to its original home. This ushered in a long period of stability when the Society staged a wide range of shows, many of them quite ambitious for such a small stage.

1973 saw the transfer of productions to the Princes Hall when it opened in Aldershot, offering a much larger hall with a big stage and auditorium.

In more recent years, the Society has performed critically acclaimed shows such as Kurt Weill's “Street Scene”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Crazy for You”, “Sweeney Todd”, “Chess”, “Copacabana”, Essgee’s production of “HMS Pinafore”, “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”, “The King and I” and “Fiddler” which won the Society its most recent NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) Award for Production Excellence. During this period the Society has also won a number of awards for its programmes.

Today the Society enjoys the patronage of QinetiQ (formerly DERA). In 2001 the members decided that it would be appropriate to change the Society’s name to ‘Cody Farnborough Amateur Operatic Society’ in order to reflect its continued links with its historical home.
