  • 1. Conventions ofhorror film trailers

2. Best bits of the film is shown to attract viewers. A disruption to normality happensThe title of the film and the credits are usually shown at the end ofthe trailer. The music is indicating that a frightful moment is coming up. Forexample. The music quickens or becomes a higher pitch.Usually shown in a isolated location. The action is interrupted by credits on the screen.Dramatic angles show more of the character, high shot, low shot, close up.Commonly used dialogue, who's there?, help me and what doyou want?.Dark scary atmosphere-stormy day, dark clouds or at night.Well known actors are usually used.High pitched screams and other noises. 3. I chose three horror film trailers to resear ch toprove the co des and con ventions.Let me in 2010 Carrie 2013 Dark skies 2013 4. In my initial research I found thatthe production company logo isusually found at the very start ofthe trailer. Both Dark skies andLet me in conform with this asthey are the first things that areshown, whereas, in the trailer forCarrie, the production companylogo is 25 seconds into thetrailer. In many horror films thecompany logo is presented in away that matches the genre ofthe film, such as the ones to theright as they are dark and usered which represents horror andblood.Dark skiesCarrieLet me in 5. Lighting: Dark skiesThe lighting in this trailer swapsbetween being light to dark. Wheneverything is normal it is very bright butwhen there is a disruption to normalitythe lighting gets very dark. The firstimage shows when everything isnormal and the second shows when adisruption has been made. Thishappens a lot throughout the trailerand I would like to do this throughoutmy trailer to show the good vs the evil. There is also some flickering betweennormal and negative effect on thefootage as bruises are shown on theyoung boy. This shows that somethingis not right, that something is theopposite of normal. 6. Lighting: CarrieA lot of the shots are verydark and dull. The lightingalso swaps between light anddark, just like in Dark skies. The negative effect is alsoused in this trailer to showthe opposite of normality. Theuse of fire light is used tocreate a sinister effect andshowing destruction. 7. Lighting: Let me inWhen the boy isshown in the trailerthe lighting is brightbut when the girl isshown the lighting isdark and gloomy. Thissuggests that the girlis not normal andthat she cannot beout in light. 8. Mise-en-scene: Dark skiesThe mother character in Darkskies is shown with bruisingon her hairline, made byusing red and purple make-up,she also has her eyemake-up smudged under hereyes, showing that she hasrecently being crying. Brownand purple make-up has alsobeen used under her eyes tocreate bags, showing thatshe has not been sleeping. Her hair is also matted andnot tamed, showing that sheis not looking after herselfand that she does not careabout her appearance. 9. Mise-en-scene: CarrieThe mother from Carrie isshown with bags under hereyes showing that somethingis troubling her and stoppingher from sleeping. Thewallpaper and the curtains inthe room show that she is oldfashioned and traditional. 10. Mise-en-scene: Let me inTo show that this character isnot normal, she has heavybrown and purple make-upunder her eyes and paleskin, showing that she is notsleeping properly and ismalnourished. This makesher look like she could be avillain character and makesthe viewers wonder why sheis this way. 11. Shots: Dark skiesThis low angle shot showsthe boy looking up at aflickering street light. Thisangle of shot makes it looklike he is looking up at thesky and that something orsomeone is up there trying toget down. 12. Shots: CarrieThe top image is a highangle shot of Carrie, thisshows that is looked down onby everyone else and thatshe is not important. Thesecond image is a low angleshot of the school bullies, showing that they are moreimportant and that they havethe power. 13. Shots: Let me inThis long shot of the railwaygates show that they arepoorly lit by the lights on thegate, this suggests thatsomething sinister may takeplace here. Conventionally, scenes that contain scaryevents are shot at night asthe dark represents thingsbeing hidden and darkthoughts and events. 14. Titles: Dark skiesContractions are used inthese titles and they are allwritten in white capital lettersin a sans serif font. Thisshows that this film isinformal and not based on atrue story as it is not writtenin a serious way. The titlesare placed between the mainevents in the trailer, forexample, the top title is afterthe first alien attack andbefore all the birds fly into thehouse. 15. Titles: CarrieThe titles in Carrie are inwhite capital letters in a seriffont on a plain blackbackground. This is theopposite of the normal blackfont on a white background, showing that this film hassomething in it that is theopposite of normal. The lasttitle is slightly different to therest as is has blood drippingon it. 16. Titles: Let me inLike Carrie, Let me in haswhite capital letters in a seriffont on a plain blackbackground. This shows theopposite of normality. All thetitles stick to a blackbackground with white textapart from the one showingthe name of the film as this inin black text on what lookslike frosted glass as the filmis set in winter.
