Coconut dehusker

Coconut dehusker

Mr. R. Jayaseelan has developed a simple labour saving mechanical device called Coconut Dehusker. A 1.5 HP Electric motor is coupled through a belt to a long cylindrical metal rod. The tip of the rod is fixed with two sharp blades at one side. The blades are at feet length and at 1 interval. These blades on rotation help to dehusk the coconut easily to the desired level. In the innovators work spot there are six such sets. Each set is coupled to a 1.5 HP electric motor. With the use of this device the husk could be separated into four pieces still leaving some coir fibres in the nuts. At average 150 nuts can be dehusked per hour. In a shift of 8 hours, about 7200 nuts (6x150x8) could be dehusked. For feeding the nuts six labourers are needed. The cost of dehusking 7200 nuts with this mechanical device will only be Rs. 336. Wages for six labourers in a shift @ Rs. 50/- per labourers cost Rs. 300. Electricity charges for 12 units @ Rs. 3 per unit cost Rs. 36.2001

Mr. R Jayaseelan has studied

upto SSLC and owns a coconut

garden and mango orchard in

Koomapatti. He also manages

few coconut gardens on lease for

the last six years. He performs

dehusking and packs the coconuts

in gunny bags. He sends

lorry load of nuts through agents

at Madurai and from there to

northern states.

The Product:

JJ dehusker is a partial coconut dehusker that can dehusk a coconut to various designs lilke 4 pattai, 6 pattai, 8 pattai, 4 pattai belt and Kanagunaru (Pattai in Tamil means a strip of the outer husk). These designs are preferred by traders in North India. The dehusking rate is 275 nuts per hour on an average.

The coconut market:

1. Tender coconut

-Not relevant for us

2. Copra

-Not relevant for us

3. Totally dehusked nuts-JJ dehusker cannot do total

Dehusking. Tamill Nadu market

prefers totally dehusked nuts.

4. Partial dehusking

-Rajasthan, Delhi, Bombay and

Gujarat.

Market Potential:

Customers for JJ dehusker are coconut traders who cater to the North Indian market.

who cater to the N.India market

=(app.)1500

Why JJ dehusker needs incubation?

1. The intermittent on-off cycles that the machine is subjected to (about 20 cycles every minute). Even an appliance like a bulb that has no moving parts would fail very soon if it is operted like this.

( - Anna University)

2. It does not dehusk completely.

3. Eventhough dehusking is done by electric power, it still needs labour for the operation.

4. Optimising source of power. Can a single 9 HP motor be used instead of using 5 different 1.5 HP motors?

What does a customer want ?

1. A real labour saving device which can even do automatic feeding and unloading

2. A device which can do both partial and full dehusking ( To cater to local merchants and interstate merchants)

3. A portable device

4. A device that could be powered by alternate sources of power like oil engine.

5. Training should be provided when the machine is installed.

6. Using this machine even 10 pattai can be made, but one should have the skill to do that.

7. The size of the nut is maintained and the husk retention is also better when this machine is used for dehusker.

8. It will take some time for the beginners to operate the button.

9. If bulk order is placed for the machine then will there be a price reduction?

10. The rate of dehusking operation should be more.

11. This machine can be used only to make designed coconuts. So if a coconut trader gets order for totally dehusked nuts, then this machine will lie redundant.

FEEDBACK FROM THE COCONUT TRADERS

Places where demonstrations were conducted:

State

: TamilNadu

Districts

:1. Dindigul, Rajapalayam (September, 2001)

2. Thanjavur composite (October, 2001)

3. Madurai (November, 2001)

Design Issues:1. The number of coconuts dehusked per hour should be more.

2. A coconut dehusker that can operate in single phase will be more useful. Why? Because most of the shops owned by coconut traders have only single phase connection.

3. Only one person should be required for entire dehusking operation. (At present another labour is required to collect the coconuts and collect the husks).

4. Cost of the machine shall be still lower.

5. A machine that would totally dehusk will be more useful to us.

Miscellaneous:

6. The quality of work- dehusking is good when JJ dehusker is used.

7. This machine is useful to dehusk only design coconuts (Traders in Composite Thanjavur donot get frequent orders for design coconuts. They get orders only for totally dehusked coconuts frequently)

8. The rate of dehusking operation should be more.

9. This machine suits for designs like 8 patta and 6 patta.

Project - III Coconut Dehusking Machine. The project is based on an innovation by Mr Jayssalen form Tamil Nadu to mechanically dehusk coconuts on a large scale. The innovation selected as one of the projects to be redesigned and developed to a marketable level by the NIF, National Innovation Foundation. The innovation was taken up as a project since it had immense scope for improving various aspects that would make it a better product. Detailed analysis various aspects of the existing machine such as ergonomics, productivity, usability, scenario of usage, manufacturability etc. were done to arrive at a few concepts for dehusking coconuts. The selected concept is an ergonomically sound, functionally safe, easy to manufacture and mass-produce and convenient to repair and maintain. Overall aesthetics of the machine has been enhanced to a great extent. The innovation has been developed to a marketable level with a remarkable improvement in productivity (about 600 coconuts per hour) at a safe and comfortable pace of working. The developed machine is expected to offer to the user a convenient, safe and user friendly manner of working to produce more at the end of the day.

Mr. Karrupaiah, of Process Ekuipment, Coimbatore, has developed the coconut-dehusking machine. The machine can dehusk 500-coconuts/ hour of size of dia 120 mm to 250 mm. The machine requires 3 semi-skilled people to operate and achieve the above efficiency. The machine operates on a 1.5 HP single-phase motor, weighs 175 kg and is provided with forward and reverse switch. The machine has set of rollers supported with anti-friction non-corrosive bearings, strippers and is coated to prevent rusting. The dehusked coconut will fall on the left side and the husk on the right side of the operator. The machine's design has been registered with the Patent Office, Chennai.
