I understand that this issue is to be released just after Eid, so hopefully, by the time you read this all operations will have returned to normal working hours after the Holy Month although the summer mid-day break will still of course apply as we move into the hottest months.

I’ve been asked by the publishers to try and keep my Chairman’s note short this month as we have lots of interesting articles to cram into this edition, contributed by our various department heads.

That in itself is truly great news as it means that we must surely be busy with many newsworthy projects and that those responsible are taking the opportunity to showcase their wonderful efforts this month.

So then briefly, top among this month’s highlights for me personally, is how tremendously well our management teams seem to be embracing our new relationship with Cape and how we can already see a clear

path toward some very exciting opportunities here in the Gulf region together.

Further afield, but equally exciting is the fact that we have just kicked off our first major project in Thailand, for the inspection of a major portion of the storm-water drains in Bangkok city, hopefully as a pre-cursor to more major repair works. We have also added Johur Bahru, Malaysia as another pin in the map resultant from our spectacular large diameter lining project for Shell there, last month and this, more information of which follows later within this publication.

In KL whilst APS(M) still patiently wait with baited breath, we are now assured that wait is nearly over and that their patience will soon be rewarded, with more IFL pipe lining projects. Hopefully therefore, next month’s newsletter shall carry more announcements on that subject.

In the meantime and without taking up more column inches – well done to all & please enjoy this month’s edition!

In the late seventies, as Technical Manager of Ceilcote UK, I became involved with a fledgling company APS Dubai, when using them for support on a BP tank lining project in the UAE. Who would have thought that first brief introduction and foray into the desert, meeting Robert Walters who had set up the APS company, would lead into a lifetime’s career? With a vision for a corrosion engineering company to service the then booming oil and gas industry, with the correct skills sets and services to protect the various onshore and offshore assets of the various operating companies developing in the UAE however, even back then the future looked bright. In those early days, we lived very much off the well stimulation companies such as Halliburton, Dowell-Schlumberger and the like, lining static, ship board and road-borne acid tanks with rubber with our small team of 20 people. From there we developed the Derakane laminate alternate which is now used and recognized globally. One of our major breakthroughs came in the mid-eighties, via ADGAS who contacted APS to provide a coating system for the roofs of the 6 LNG/LPG storage units on DAS Island, which was our first multi-million dollar project. From there it was onward and upward with the confidence and experience to tackle ever larger projects. The acquisition of the Splashzone neoprene coating plant from Regal/Peel (ME) in 1982, again reinforced our position as market leader in the region for coating risers and conductors and clamps for the burgeoning offshore industry. From the early 80’s into the 90’s, we won every single offshore riser project in MENA region and offshore India with ONGC.The lining of crude oil storage tanks were the next on the agenda and APS lined the first crude tank no. 13 on DAS island for ADMA OPCO over two decades ago with many other successive tanks following for both ADMA and ZADCO, ADOC Japan and GASCO and Qatar Petroleum. APS continued expanding its broad base services into thermal sprayed metallic coatings glassflake linings and fireproofing and jet fuel systems for which fuelling systems lined by us are in operation in over 25 airports in the region. So from our humble early beginning of 20 people , we now have around 450 staff today coupled with the added Channeline, Pipeline Rehabilitation and IFL Divisions. With Robert’s continued enthusiasm and positivity, we have certainly come a long way in our 37 years and yet we still continue to strive to be the best company in our field, in the MENA and Far East regions in specialized corrosion protection through our dedicated work force of highly trained and motivated staff. Complementing the Oil and Gas business, the company was chosen to install the full corrosion protection packages on both the Burj Al Arab and the Burj Khalifa. Working upon the tallest building and tallest hotel in the world was the pinnacle of achievement for APS at that time. Our recently appointed Coatings & Linings Divisional Manager, Chris Burkill, is already in full swing to take this Division, to the next level with growth plans being implemented and a further focus on operational excellence, so we can look forward with pride to the next 37 years of continued service.

APS Malaysia, together with UTIC Services Sdn. Bhd., recently completed the rehabilitation of a twin DN500mm chilled water pipeline at a length of 50m each, for Putrajaya Holdings. The existing underground pipeline was found to be leaking and heavily corroded. The client had limited options on how to repair and/or replace, as open excavation was not an option as the pipe alignment was running under corporate offices.APSM - Mohd. Zamros worked closely with the client engineering team to design, engineer, install and commission the best viable solution to rehabilitate, without major excavation work. The decision was made to deploy Primusline. Some of the major challenges faced were; restricted access, bends, hot conditions and the pipeline shut down time, which was restricted to out of office hours & week-ends only. The works were scheduled for two consecutive

week-ends starting on Friday after 5pm until Monday morning 5am.Well done to all the APSM team, UTIC Services & Kristian Pollack (Primusline) on the successful completion of the works.

C o n g rat u l ati o n s to K h u n S e r m k i at Sanguanruang (APS Thailand MD) and the whole APS (T) team on the recent award of BMA Bangkok storm water tunnel network inspection project. Two years back during one of the worst rainy seasons on record, the Bangkok Metropolitan suffered major widespread flooding. Questions at that time were raised on the performance, integrity and

structural condition of the storm water tunnel network.APS will inspect over 10km of storm water tunnel(s) using the latest hi-tech Redzone HD profiler inspection system.Well done and all the best with the project execution.

The Safety Committee awarded Mr. Indrajeeth Ram this month’s Best Unsafe Observation award. Mr. Ram observed that a 110-Volt grinder from the stove has been connected to a 220-Volt outlet. Plugging a 110-Volt appliance into a 220-Volt outlet would probably damage, burn out, or explode the appliances. Congratulations Mr. Indrajeeth Ram!

Other awardee:Best Safe Worker of the Month: Crisanto Estanislao

Mr. Cellona noticed that one of the employees was passing under the suspended load which was brought to the attention of the HSE Department. The HSE Department conducted the safety toolbox talk with the employee and informed him about hazard, risk and consequences involved while passing under the suspended load. For everyone’s safety;at no time shall the operator or any employee be permitted to stand or pass under a suspended load.

Last month, Microsoft published results of a study involving 2,112 people which focused upon attention span, the amount of concentrated time we can spend on a task without becoming distracted. Apparently, average attention span has now fallen to eight seconds from a previously recorded 12 seconds in 2000. Microsoft concluded that our present obsession with portable devices was responsible for this decline. It would certainly be hard to deny the current preoccupation with mobile phones and tablets which, in extreme cases, is manifested in “nomophobia”, or the fear of being without our mobile. The extent of nomophobia was revealed in a recent study by SecurEnvoy. Out of 1,000 people surveyed in the UK, 66% said they felt genuine fears of poor reception, running out of credit, battery exhaustion, and losing sight of their phones. It would also be difficult to claim that this obsession did not distract us from other activities given that latest research indicates we usually check our phones up to 160 times each day.So what does this all mean for the world of work? There are strong arguments to suggest that, when used sensibly, mobile devices have the potential to increase productivity. However, our usually being accompanied at all times by such obvious sources of distraction must surely have a down side. A survey commissioned by recruitment company, CareerBuilder, produced clear evidence of a negative impact upon employee productivity. 24% of participants admitted that, during a

typical working day, they devoted at least one hour to personal calls, emails or texts. Further, 21% estimated they spent one hour or more visiting non-work related websites. Many Safety Experts have cautioned that mobile calls and texting can also cause accidents within the workplace. So what can be done to deny the allure of this source of distraction, regain our focus, and maximize our productivity? Most authors on this subject offer similar advice as follows:-• Turn off telephone ringers, app alerts and notifications to immediately reduce distraction.• Operate your laptop or tablet without an Internet connection, and your mobile in airplane mode (or simply switched off), to seclude yourself from

distractions for a period of time. • Make meetings no phone zones. A focused, no interruptions meeting will achieve a lot more in a shorter time.• Stay away from social networking and other time-wasting websites. • Get into the habit of undertaking email processing in batches, and at planned times, preferably only when you have completed the most important tasks

of the day. • Make sure you limit your email time and also unsubscribe from senders you could live without. • Try to speak with colleagues to solve problems, clarify issues, or make decisions, thereby eliminating some of your emails. I switched off my personal mobile phone around three weeks ago. Yes, the first few days were difficult but then I was quite surprised to experience a number of benefits including:-• A predominant feeling of liberation as I began to regain control of my life, being no longer a slave to the iPhone.• A noticeable increase in available time for family and leisure pursuits.• A greater sense of peace and tranquility with no disturbed nights wondering whether that alert which had just woken me should be checked out.• A sense of reassurance derived from the realization that I do not appear to be nomophobic!Having conducted this simple experiment, I would certainly recommend attempting to increase attention span by developing your own strategy to deal with mobile device obsession. You will surely become more satisfied as your increased work productivity becomes recognized. In addition, there are likely to be significant benefits to be enjoyed away from work.
