Military appreciation is not just one month around here. We appre-ciate our military and their families every day. April just happens to be the month we really promote our appreciation for those who serve our country in the military.

Personally, my love for the military began at an early age. My grandfather, Douglas Worthy Davis, served in the European The-atre during World War II. When my grandfather returned home, his life was forever changed from his service. Once returning from war, my grandfather never ate anything out of a can, he never went camping and he did not talk about his time in Europe. Over the years, my family would come to find out bits and pieces of in-formation from my grandfather about his war-time service. He was a machine fabricator by trade so it was a natural fit for him to work with metal and repair bridges for the Army.

Per family, my grandfather was a part of the operation that cleared barbed wire off of Normandy Beach the night before the beaches

were stormed. He was shot during action where he fully healed and received a Purple Heart for his service. I still remember seeing the Purple Heart in the grey, velour, hinged case like it was yesterday. My grandfather passed away in 1983, but he certainly left behind his legacy. I will always respect him for his bravery and leadership, particularly when his country required it during World War II.

Most of us have family members who have served or do serve in the military, whether it be in war time or not. We look up to them, brag to our peers and neighbors about them, and we are proud to call them dad, mom, son, daughter, sister, brother, niece, nephew or grandchild. Our Servicemen and Servicewomen regularly make sacrifices that we will never know. At the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber, I am proud to say that we love our military and we back that up through our sup-port on and off the base.

A major show of support from the Chamber is the Military Affairs Committee (“MAC”). Established in 1978, the MAC is composed of Chamber members who go the extra mile to further strengthen the relationship between active duty military members and the community. The MAC continues to lend support and experience to the military community and mission.

MAC members pay additional annual dues that support these meetings, including participation in the quarterly and annual outstanding Airmen awards at Eglin and Hurlburt Field, Wing Level picnics, and the numerous requests for funding support by various military and supporting organizations. Chamber board member, Barbara Britt is 2019 chair of the MAC and is doing an outstanding job. I encourage you to check out the MAC meetings and get plugged in to enhance the value of your chamber membership.

We at Bank of England Mortgage fully support our veterans and active duty military. We focus on VA Lending to assist those who have and are protecting our nation. Bank of England Mortgage is also one of the sponsors for the Military Family Appreciation Day which is scheduled for Saturday, April 13, 2019. The Chamber wholeheartedly thanks Step One Automotive Group for being the title sponsor for this event. Be sure to come out and check out the event and don’t forget to stop by our booth! This is a great event put on by the Chamber to support the Military Families in our com-munity. If you want to get involved in this event, let the Chamber know. We look forward to seeing you there!

Luckily, I have not received this kind of call very often—but I got one the other day. Someone I knew well had died very unexpectedly. I received the call from a mutual friend. I later discovered that he was the same age as I am. When something like this happens, It’s always a mish mash of emo-tions/thoughts/memories/stories. Do I grieve that he is gone, or celebrate that I knew him in my life? Certainly a mixture of both.

A few days later--out of nowhere--I read an article entitled “The 9 Most Common Regrets People Have At The End of Life,” written by Grace Blu-erock. (Google it on www.mindbodygreen.com). This was a sign that I—certainly we all—need to be enjoying all aspects of life—at all times!

I highly recommend that you read the entire article as I found it extremely meaningful. Grace spent 6 years working in hospice care—and as such had the opportunity to learn from many people’s life stories. (Since I didn’t ask Grace if I could paraphrase her writing—I hope she will not mind my promoting her article.)

Grace states: “We can make conscious choices now to live fully and make the most out of each opportunity we have. These nine regrets expressed by hospice patients can teach us how to start living a better life today.”

1. I wish I had been more loving to the people who matter the most. 2. I wish I had been a better spouse, parent, or child. 3. I wish I had not spent so much time working. 4. I wish I had taken more risks. 5. I wish I had been happier and enjoyed life more. 6. I wish I had lived my own dream. 7. I wish I had taken better care of myself. 8. I wish I’d have done more for others. 9. I wish I had chosen work that was meaningful for me.

As I review them I noted which ones I needed to enhance—and which ones I am doing all right with right now. I hope you do the same.

ROUND OF APPLAUSE

Bit-Wizards Takes Home Three Silver ADDY AwardsThe American Advertising Awards is the most comprehensive com-petition for the advertising indus-try. Over 35,000 professionals and students enter each year nation-wide. The American Advertising Federation was created to "recog-nize and reward the creative spirit of excellence in advertising." There are three tiers of competition, the submissions begin at the local level and move up to regionals, then on to nationals.

Bit-Wizards first joined their local AAF Club in 2010 and since has en-tered and won for nine consecutive years (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017). Each year sub-missions include both internal mar-keting projects and external client projects. This year Bit-Wizards won three Silver ADDY Awards for 2018 projects.

The winners were: 1. Wizard Life Periodic Table T-Shirt -

The goal of the Periodic Table T-Shirt was to capture the “nerdisms” and culture of Bit-Wizards’ Wizard Life and thus promote the uniqueness and quirkiness of each employee at Bit-Wizards.

2. Wizard Life Brand Stickers - The Wizard Life Brand Stickers a similar concept to the Periodic Table T-shirt. They help to convey both internally and externally the personality of Bit-Wizards brand.

3. Art of the Emerald Coast Christ-mas Campaign - Instead of printing a Christmas card for the 2018 holi-day season, Bit-Wizards chose to do-nate the funds that would typically be spent on card printing to the Arc of the Emerald Coast through a special campaign called “Ev-eryone Deserves a Magical Christ-mas.” For this campaign, Bit-Wizards would match up to $2,500 of dona-tions. Under the mantra of inclusion, our team created a donation cam-

paign featuring the Arc of the Em-erald Coast’s very own clients. This campaign was a huge success. Bit-Wizards raised $2,770 and caught at-tention from Microsoft with a grand total in donations of $5,770 to The Arc of the Emerald Coast. The cam-

paign channels include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Email, and Web-site promotions.

On all three projects, concept was by Candie Mitchell and Melissa Pat-rick, design by Melissa Patrick.

The Emerald Coast Science Center was beyond thrilled to celebrate its 30th Anniversary on March 9th. With the assistance from some truly talented artists and photographers, the mu-seum’s exterior now features gorgeous artwork depicting the numerous things science is to all of us, making it a truly smART museum. Along-side the works featured on the banners, 17 art-ists contributed beautiful photos, paintings, and mixed media pieces featuring what science is to them as a part of the event's silent auction.

Director Diane Fraser spoke during the event

about the importance of the Science Center to our community over the last 30 years, and gave thanks to the many people like Alexis Tib-betts and Cindy Frakes, who both brought the museum to life, and to those who have assisted the center through sponsorships, exhibit build-ing, and support of their mission to inspire and grow a scientifically engaged community. The progress the Science Center has achieved over the past 30 years has been incredible, and the whole staff looks forward to bringing families and students amazing encounters for many years to come.

We also provide information to the public for all the low-cost options we are aware of via our website (https://bit.ly/2Fc0gI2). Our

annual event Whiskers & Wine at Twisted Grape is on April 27 from 3 pm to 5 pm. Check our Facebook page for details. This fundraiser will help pay for the building renovations currently being completed at the shelter. Shop SOCKS Thrift Store locat-ed directly behind the shelter and donate your lightly-used clothing, household goods, and collectibles to sell. SOCKS is here to help the cats and kittens in our area.

Gulfview Preview and Heroes’ WelcomeOur thanks to Eglin Federal Credit Union for their sponsorship of our March 5 event at the newly refurbished Gulfview Hotel. Attendees got a “first look” at the fabulous details of the soon-to-be FWB Welcome Center – and also had the opportunity to be up close and personal with the last three surviving members of the original 1st Air Commandos, including our very favorite, Col. Richard E. Cole.

Eglin Federal Credit Union CEO, Jerry Williams, along with guest of honor Col. Richard E. Cole.

The crowd was fascinated by author Dennis Okerstrom’s comments on the importance of the Air Commandos.

Dennis Okerstrom, SMSgt Bill Cartwright and SSgt Patt Meara were very gracious and signed all the books presented to them for signa-ture. What an honor it was to meet them!

Cat and Stephen Windham of Twisted Grape Wine Bar and Café graciously provided the wine for our guests

With food from Magnolia Grill and beer from Props Craft Brewery, our guests were certainly well provided for!

Recently at the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce

Helen and Randall Wise recently made a donation to the newly refurbished Gulfview Hotel, which will soon be opening as a Wel-come Center for the City of Fort Walton Beach. Ted Corcoran, President and CEO of the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce (center), accepted the donation of a painting of the Gulfview completed in the 1960’s by Mrs. Wise, who grew up in Fort Walton Beach as a member of the extended Staff family.

Kim Motley Gregory and FWB Chamber President Ted Corcoran are “making calls” on the original Gulfview Hotel switchboard that was recently donated to the newly restored Hotel by the Motley family. Kim’s father, Charlie Motley, helped to bring telephone service to the hotel back in the early 50’s, and he built this tem-porary switchboard to run the phone system. After it was later updated and stored for a while, it eventually made its way back to the family, and they have been gracious enough to donate it to the City of Fort Walton Beach for display at the new Welcome Center. Ted ac-cepted the gift on behalf of the Chamber and the City.

It’s nice to have friends in high places – like State Representative Mel Ponder, who displayed his Coastlines in the Chamber in Tallahassee. Rep. Ponder is a great Chamber friend – and we are proud of his representation!

Ted accepts some donations to the Gulfview from Michael G. Tucker, a FWB native who has been a great support to the Chamber during the entire relocation process of the Gulfview. Michael has combined his love of history, of his community, and his talents as a photographer and treasure hunter to support the grand building and help us with our efforts.

The Niceville Valparaiso Chamber recently presented Pamela Sparks of Special Olympics Florida, Okaloosa County, with their “You Rock” award for her hard work and dedication to Special Olympics. The organization noted that this month’s award goes to a member who always goes above and beyond when it comes to fulfilling her organi-zations mission.

• She is passionate and caring • She is hard working and resilient • She is one of the hardest working Executive Directors I know and she travels county wide to provide every service and opportunity possible to her clients • She offers 18 programs to nearly 300 clients and manages almost 100 volunteers to make it all happen• She actively encourages local businesses to join the Chamber and to be engaged in the local community • She is a dedicated Chamber Ambassador who regularly attends Ribbon cuttings

Congratulations to Pamela Sparks, this years "You Rock" award recipient.

On Tuesday, March 5, 2019, Fort Walton Beach hosted the Gulfview Preview and Heroes’ Reception. It was a Celebration of Fort Walton Beach History. The Gulfview is 116 years old; and if those walls could talk what would they say? That night we were honored to also be celebrating Lt. Col. Dick Cole (the last surviving member of the Doolittle Raiders), SMSgt Bill Cart-wright and SSgt Patt Meara. All three are the last know surviving members from the 1st Air Commando Group of World War II. That afternoon they had been at Hurl-burt celebrating the 1st SOW-sponsored 75th Anniversary of Operation Thursday. Lt. Col. is 103 years old and I am sure that the other gentlemen were close to that

age. However they still retained their stature and their bearings throughout the day and evening. As I was sitting there I was brought back to a time when we spent more time fighting for our country and less time fighting each other--when we showed respect and watched over our words and action--when we were so proud of our county, that we got chills when the National Anthem was played.

That afternoon at the ceremony, all three men were in attendance. The ceremony was full of tradition and respect for those who had served. People acknowledge that we all have a part to play and that we’re all Americans and we exist be-

cause we all pull together for a com-mon cause, to keep our country and our families safe. As time passes we lose the chance to really see how life was, how Americans treated each other.

Being part of MAC and finding out how we can be of assistance allows us to build those all-important relationships that make this a community a place where we celebrate one another’s accomplish-ments and success.

Come join us on the 3rd Monday of the month at the Fort Walton Beach Yacht Club, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm.

Ambassadors| A Testimonial I once had a conversation with some-one who asked me if the time and en-ergy spent with the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce is worth it. In a heartbeat, I said yes! I have my own testimonial that has been shared in the past, but don't just take my word for it.

Anne ziegenhorn, Co-Founder of The Implant Truth Survivors Committee (and new to our Chamber and Ambassa-dors committee) has had a wonderful

experience with us since joining the Chamber late in 2018. Not only has she made valuable connections, but she was also scouted and honored to be named Mrs. Emerald Coast of Florida International 2019. "Being an Ambas-sador allows me to meet new people as they join as well as learn more about the business at their Ribbon Cuttings; this is a great way to meet and learn in a more intimate and quaint way. I have been having a blast and highly rec-ommend for all businesses to join the

Chamber and for them to get involved with the Ambassadors." Are you interested in seeing what the Ambassadors are all about? We are al-ways accepting new members. Please join us for our monthly meeting at the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, April 17th from 7:45 AM until 9:00 AM.

Can you introduce yourself, your brand, or your company in a compelling way in 30 seconds or less? According to the Wikipedia website: “An elevator pitch is a short description of an idea, product or company that explains the concept in a way such that any listener can understand it in a short period of time. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elevator_pitch) This is just one of the many things we have fun helping each other work on at RPM. Come visit the RPM committee and let’s hear your “eleva-tor pitch.” We meet every month on the third Tuesday of each month, 8:00 to 9:15 am in the Chamber conference room.

RPM Committee What is an elevator pitch?

Come join us on Thursday, April 11, for the next meeting of the FWB Young Profes-sionals at 5:30 pm. On this special date, we will enjoy some casual time togeth-er with Happy Hour prices, snacks, and fun networking games. We’ll be at the PROPS Tap Room at 125 Lovejoy Road. All Chamber members (Young Professionals age 40 and under) are invited to attend and network with your fellow Chamber YP’s. (This takes the place of the regu-larly scheduled meeting on April 19.)

Military Affairs Committee|Remember WhenThe fastest growing airport in the USA continues to expand! Yes, our own VPS is adding more routes and planning on infrastructure expansion too.

Just three years ago, Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport had just five routes served by our Legacy Airlines, American, Delta and United. One of those (Washington) was seasonal. In three short years with the arrival of Allegiant Airlines, the airport can now boast 37 non-stop destinations.

Comparing October to December 2017 with the same period in 2018, Allegiant’s passenger numbers were up over 140%, and our legacy carriers were also up nearly 6%. In this past October/Decem-ber period the airport handled some 157, 239 passenger, up 21.23% on the previous year.

These are impressive, if somewhat dry figures. The story behind them is much more exiting. First, bear in mind that these are figures for our Prime sea-son (September to May) as opposed to Peak (June to August) season. The routes that Allegiant has added are aimed at bringing tourists into our area from major markets that may not have previously sent us many visitors. They have opened up our area to guests who are new to us, who are not going to clog our roads and many of whom will visit outside of the 90 days of summer. The inclusion of Chicago into the mix by Al-legiant has prompted American Airlines to experiment with a non-stop Chicago route too. That’s great for both tourism and business traffic.

The latest news comes from Silver Air-ways who has announced a year round, daily, non-stop service to Orlando. The same aircraft then operates to Fort Lauderdale, before returning. The op-tion of day return trips to Orlando and onward connections to the Caribbean and other destinations on Silver’s grow-ing network is not just great for tourism, but excellent news for our business com-munity.

Without doubt, the success of Allegiant and (fingers crossed!) Silver, other air-lines will be attracted to add VPS to their network. That will bring the need to ex-pand the airport - plans are in place. So watch this space! (Better still, check out https://www.flyvps.com/master-plan-update/).

We have a new Chief in town…Police Chief that is. The City of Fort Walton Beach selected Robert Bage as its new Chief of Police. He officially began his new role on March 11th and was gra-cious enough to come speak to the Community Perspectives Committee just three days later for our March meet-ing.

Chief Bage has worked for the North Miami Police Department for the past twenty years. He has worked in the ar-eas of patrol, investigations, community policing, traffic, marine patrol and most recently he served as Assistant Chief. He stressed the importance of having a strong community partnership in our committee meeting. Two of his top pri-orities are to increase community en-gagement and improve the quality of life for everyone in Fort Walton Beach.

The Chief got a taste of that strong community partnership right away. The Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce has been working with the Fort Walton Beach Police Depart-ment to help finance the purchase and training of a new K-9 unit. Our commu-nity showed their support of this partner-ship with their donations, and Bill Roberts, Chamber Executive Board member and

past Chairman was happy to present Chief Bage with a check in the amount of $6,681.25 to help towards this cam-paign goal. Great job!

Our speaker for April will be Nathan Sparks, Executive Director of the Oka-loosa Economic Development Council. So mark your calendar for Thursday,

April 11th and make plans to join us and share YOUR perspective.

This committee is open to all Cham-ber members. We meet on the second Thursday of each month at 8am at your FWB Chamber of Commerce.

Thank You To Our New Annual Sponsors! We are proud to welcome four new Annual Sponsors of the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce: Bank of England Mortgage; Step One Automotive Group; The Island, by Hotel RL; and Emerald Coast Harley-Davidson. They join an elite group of businesses (you’ll see listed on almost every Chamber communication) that give an extra level of support to the Chamber.

They help sponsor our events, they provide special boosts to our initiatives, and they work separately and through the Chamber to enhance and uplift our community. Each of these companies has chosen to make an investment in the FWB Chamber because they take pride in their businesses, in our community, and in the way the Chamber helps them accom-plish their goals. As Bank of England’s CFO Matt Turpin, our 2019 Chamber Chair, says, “At Bank of England, relationships are our business. The Chamber is a major vehicle we use to deepen our relationships while establishing new connections.”

You’ll be hearing more about all our Annual Sponsors through-out the year – and we hope you’ll recognize them for their sup-port – and do business with them as fellow Chamber members.

t The Foxy Fokkers from Fokker’s Pub joined us for breakfast and presented a $1,000 check to Interim Chief Lovering and Mayor Rynearson for the K-9 Fun-draiser.

p Erica Hollon of Bank of England Mortgage did a great job when she sang the National Anthem. She inspired all of the audience members to sing right along with her – a won-derful sound!

p As he does virtually every month, Dr. Scott Smith of HealthSource Chiropractic FWB North tried hard to give away his Fast Cash at Breakfast jackpot of ($300 in March) to a lucky Chamber member who was at FFC. Sadly, none of the members whose names were called were there to claim the prize – so it will be $400 next month! Don’t miss it!
