KZN Premier Spelling Bee.Tshegofatso, from Adams College in
Adams Mission near Amanzimtoti, wenthead to head with second-place bee Nqo-bile Memela, relying on the rhythm of herfoottappingtohelpherrememberdifficultwords that had even seasoned teachersand professionals at the event in KwaDu-kuza stumped.
The event saw more than 50 pupilsfrom schools within the iLembe and eThe-kwini municipalities compete at theStanger High School hall on Saturday.
Tshegofatso, who achieved victory af-ter spelling the word “tessellate” correctly,breezed through every word with confi-dence (tessellate means to decorate afloor or pavement with mosaics or to covera plain surface with the repeated use of asingle shape, without gaps or overlap-
ping).She walked away with R6000 in cash
as well as a trophy and certificate, a boxof books sponsored by Via Afrika and Rota-
ry, a Gems Schoolwear voucher and a Sparvoucher. Her teacher, E.V. Mbele, also re-ceived a Spar voucher, a Kindle and a bookvoucher and R1 000 cash. The school re-
ceived books from Via Afrika.Both second and third place went to
Nqobile Memela and Nhlakanipho Mkhizefrom Mbheki Secondary.
When judges Neil Tapinos (generalmanager for KZN community titles), VusiMthalane(newseditor,SouthCoastFever)and Thembeka Dlamini (iLembe Depart-ment of Education) made their way to thefore, contestants knew the time had comefor their hard work to finally pay off.
While shot nerves got the better ofsome, others shone through the elimina-tion rounds until only 10 remained.
The top five contestants were giventwo chances to prove themselves as a bo-nus round applied.
In the bonus round, contestants had tospell and define the words which the judg-es asked.
The bonus round was won bySiphumelele Njapha from Sidelile Highwho walked away with R5000 as well as
other prizes.Second and third-place pupils in the
bonus round also received cash prizes.Speaking to the Fever after the compe-
tition, Tshegofatso said: “I am keeping thewinning money for my tertiary education,well, to add to the bursary that I wonthrough the competition.
Teacher Mbele said: “Our pupils wereextremely diligent. We were exceptionallypositive and worked tremendously hard. ”
Nirvana Naidoo from Boston College,who presented bursaries to the top threesaid: “The Durban and North Coast 2014KZN Premier Spelling Bee competition wasan exhilarating experience.”
“The participants, who needed nervesof steel, had the audience captivated.”
Marketing manager of Media24 Localnewspapers Sharmaine Reuter-Smithsaid, “I want to shout out loud ‘a buzzingthankyoutoallofoursponsorswhoinvest-ed in the 2014 KZN Premier Spelling Bee’.
“These grand contributions have al-lowed us to reach our aim which is to createeducational opportunities, and now our‘bees’ with their schools have the tools todo so.”

THE Tongaat Community Polic-ingForum(CPF)officiallyelect-ed its new executive andmem-
bers on Sunday, 31 August at theGokhale Hall.
Inadditiontothosewhousuallyat-tend the meeting, provincial repre-sentatives including SimphiweMbele,thedirectorgeneralfortheDe-partmentofSafetyandSecurity in theprovince as well as Desmond Mtam-bo, theprovincial chairperson for theCPF board were also present.
Opening the elections, Mbele saiditwasan imperativemeeting thathasa “profound impact on the common
man”.“We are here to ensure that there
is proper co-operation between thecommunity and the police. Crime is aserious issue in our country and po-lice cannot work alone. They needyou, the people, to assist in whateverway you can.”
Mtbambo also explained the im-portance of the CPF and its functionin the democratic process sayingcrimeisnotrestrictedtorace,religionor creed.
“This is a battle that we are allfighting everyday. The CPF is meantto play a role of assistance and vigi-lance.Working together isalways thekeytoanykindofdemocraticprocess.
Yes, there will be disagreements andmany discussions. But that is thepoint.WeneedrobustdebatebecauseSouthAfricaissuchadiversecountry.Not all communities have the samechallenges.”
When it was time to vote, the nor-mally controversially plagued Ton-gaat CPF AGM went off without somuch as a mild disagreement withvoting and communication going offwithout a hitch.
Fightingforthemainseataschair-person, Moses Mabaso - a long timecommunity activist - went up againstanother household name, Nazir Sa-dack.Bothcompetitorscamedowntothe wire, but Mabaso edged out Sa-
dack 34 votes to 28.However, Sadack was not to be
outdone after he was nominated bythe house for the deputy chair posi-tion which he won without any chal-lengers.
Other positions thatwere filled in-cludedsecretary -AnjalayPillay,dep-uty secretary - Phumzile Mathonsi,treasurer - JeevaPillayandpublic re-lations officer - Suresh Dilsock.
Addressing the community,Mabaso said hewas prepared to leadandassuredall that“it is timeforseri-ous hard work”.
“I have worked with the stationcommander for a long timeand theseissuesofcrimearenotsomethingnew
tome. Therewill be respect andhon-our in the CPF that I will be headingand we will work together to fightcrime.Abeautiful car is just thatuntilit has a powerful engine to take togreat places. We are that engine andI will ensure we run smoothly.”
Acting cluster commander Briga-dier GPMakhoba addressed the elat-ed community and said she was“proud of the process”.
“Youhaveall doneverywell today.Everything has been democratic aswell as free and fair. I want you all toknow this is where the work begins.There is many hours of intense workto be done, but I am sure you are allup to the task.”

PHOENIX Police Station members assisted byDurban Central K9 Unit and Durban South K9Unit embarked on an operation against illicitcigarettes and drugs in Phoenix last week.
During the operation members arrestedseven suspects for possession of illicit ciga-rettes as well as drugs. Two boxes of illicit ciga-rettes, 132 mandrax tablets, 26 ecstacy tab-lets, 72 crack cocaine, five pieces of cocaine anddagga were recovered.
Later that afternoon Durban Flying Squadmembers joined the operation and a furthertwo suspects were arrested for possession of43 straws of heroin.
The suspects appeared in the PhoenixMagistrate’s Court for possession of illicit ciga-rettes and drugs.
The KZN Provincial Commissioner Lieuten-ant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni congratu-lated the members for their efforts in eradicat-ing drug and illicit cigarettes.

The best-selling Chevrolet modelcrossed the milestone this month, just 16months after selling its 2 millionth model.From South Africa to the U.S. and Canada,to Laos and the Philippines, Lebanon andQatar,theChevroletCruzehasproveditselfa global player among mid-sized cars.
“The Cruze is an adaptable car that ca-ters to the demands of nearly every marketin the world,” says Alan Batey, GM execu-tive vice-president of Global Chevrolet, inDetroit.
“It is testament to Chevrolet’s globalfocus and capabilities to offer a car thatis highly regarded in so many places.”
The Cruze has collected 39 productawards in China, 27 in the U.S. and 12 in Bra-zil.
Chevrolet is committed to buildingproducts in the markets they are sold, andthe Cruze is built in 11 countries on fivecontinents.
GM design teams in South Korea andGermany had the global consumer inmind when developing the car in just 27months in the late 2000s before debutingin South Korea in November of 2008.
“Medium to small-car sales aroundthe world have been growing exponen-
tially as emerging markets, in Asia andSouth America, increase car ownershipwhile mature markets, like the U.S., down-size for fuel economy,” says Michelle Krebs,senior analyst for AutoTrader.com “Small-er cars, like the Cruze, are driving salesglobally and will continue to do so.”
The Cruze also endured intensive dura-bility testing, including extreme weathertests and more than 210 crash tests tai-lored to the regulatory demands of thecountries where it is sold.
To appeal to different market tastes,the Cruze is available in three body styles,including a four-door sedan, five-doorhatchback and station wagon. Cruze ispowered by five different engines globally— 1.4, 1.6, and 1.8-litre petrol engines, and1.7 and 2.0-litre diesel engines.
Chevrolet recently also launched anew version of the Cruze catering to thestyling and packaging demands of Chinesecustomers. Cruze sales in China lead allcountries with 1.13 million sold since itslaunch in 2009.

Now in its sixth generation, the iconicMercedes-Benz SL sports car continues tobe as popular as ever. The SL’s history datesback more than 60 years to the 300 SL rac-ing sports car of 1952.
“AswiththeSLK,fortheSLmodelrangeall series derivatives come standard withthe AMG Sport Line. This offering is provingto be extremely popular with our custom-
ers who by their very nature look for a per-fect blend of light-footed sportiness withstylish comfort,” added Govender.
The SL 400 AMG Line’s V6 Biturbo en-gine with a displacement of 2 996 cc, pro-duces 245 kW of power and delivers 480Nm of torque. Performance is not compro-mised and CO2 emissions are frugal at 178g/km.
The new SL 400 AMG Line also workswith a direct injection system with spray-guided combustion, which Mercedes-Benzwas the first car manufacturer to offer inseries production.The flagship models inthe “dream car” range are the SLS Coupéand SLS AMG Roadster super sports cars.
